I have yet to read an unamazing book by him. My favourites ha e to be Neverwhere, Good Omens, and American Gods.I definitely love some Vonnegut. Slaughterhouse five is fantastic. And I have to 2nd the house of leaves. Before that I didn't bother with anything except video games.When picking among non-scifi/fantasy authors, the most enjoyable book I read in several years was by Harper Lee. Some people think she spends too much time on minutiae, but to me it's immersive. Hers were my first fantasy books when I was a wee Absidey, and the first I bought for myself when I moved out of my mom's house. I think Sunshine is my favorite, with The Blue Sword a close second. Most of her books are technically young adult, but I don't think that should ever be an impediment to reading great fiction. Heinlein - Because he was willing to write strong woman characters in an era when women were not considered strong and not allowed to be strong. I am not sure I can pick a favorite. I re-read so many of them regularly. I do particularly like Time Enough for Love and Friday. Tunnel in the Sky was my favorite as a kid when I'd plan what I'd take on a survival class final. Starship Troopers is also a must read, esp. before voting in any election. I also like Deja Thoris in Number of the Beast. Second favorite has to be Anne McCaffrey. Gainsdalf the Whey Posted September 19, 2012 Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 First it was Stephan King, I've read well over half his books (there are a ton), and my favorite book of his is actually a short story called "The Long Walk" he wrote under the pen name of Richard Bachman while he was in college. the Dark Tower series is good but just too drawn out.He was dethroned by Tolkein when I was 15 and read the Hobbit, which I still enjoy more than the Lord of the Rings series.Tolkein was then dethroned by current favorite Orson Scott Card when I read Ender's Game, which is by far my favorite book, nothing comes close except Ender's Shadow. The entire series of books dealing with the Ender universe are awesome. I've always enjoyed the very dark genres like lovecraft's mythos series, Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy. Tolkien. If there is an author I'd have to recommend, however, it would be Ildefonso Falcones, a Spanish (former?) attorney who's written two books so far, about medieval Spain. They're both brilliant.Oh and Coelho's pretty good... And Orwell. And. And and and and! It's so difficult. Will return when I've read more famous books. And almost the best book I've ever read in any genre. But no, the best book I've ever read in my life is "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery. I was floored by it.So, George R.R. Martin is top for fantasy for me. Douglas Adams is top for sci-fi because I flipping love Hitchhiker's Guide. Muriel Barbery is top overall.I also love Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Cherie Priest, and I read a lot (a LOT) of genre fiction by so many authors I can't remember, usually of the scifi/fantasy/steampunk/zombie/noir persuasion (though not all at the same time!), for book clubs on GoodReads.Anybody else on Goodreads? The Chronicles of Amber was by far my favorite series of books ever. I read all 10 books back to back probably 10 times so far. In comparison, I've read the LotR series 4 times and the wheel of time series twice. I guess the why would be his style of writing and his ability to make me fall into his books. No other author has kept me turning the pages like he has. As an anecdote, I once (in high school) copied a couple of chapters on a copy machine and stuffed them into my textbooks so it would look like I was working in class, but instead was reading his novels.
