Game of Thrones

So, a few years ago, before this series became a TV show on HBO, a friend of mine told me about it. I thought that it sounded interesting, so I bought the first book. I completely fell in love and got the next three books. There are a few characters that I love, and thusly a few that I love to hate. I finished the first three books rather quickly, stopped reading for a little while so that I could get some Christmas crafts done, and then picked up the fourth book once the holiday season was over. The problem now is that I am having a hell of a time getting into A Feast of Crows. Did anyone else that read this have this problem? I am thinking that it is because GRRM is neglecting a few of my favorites and talking about a whole set of new charaters that we don't know up to this point. I am like okay dude, I don't give a flaming rats butt about these new people, what about the people that you made me fall in love with? Where are they? What are they doing?

Also, I am a huge fan of series since I tend to "inhale books" as my mom says, so single novels are just gone too fast and I am sad that I don't get to read about my dear friends any longer. So any series suggestions are also greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy reading!

Yeah, I just keep thinking, push through this and I can get to DWD. I have a love/hate relationship with Cersei. Meaning, I love to hate her, haha. She is such a wench. At first I hated Jaime, but now I love him. And Brienne is so wierd, but I really enjoy her chapters. Some of my favorites though are few and far between (Samwell and Sansa).

The thing is GRRM always write too many chapters and the way they cut them for the next book is moving most or all of 1-2 charater's chapters to the next one.  You'll see them again.  Still, it is one of the slower ones and the next is as well, both seem to be setting up for a mighty #6.

I'm also a fan from way before the show and never miss a chance to point out that I'm the one that pointed GRRM toward the fan map that is rumored to have inspired him to have the maps redrawn, in which case I may have had a small butterwing flap of an impact on the series.

Hello !

Did you just know that every single book written in original language was split into two books for German readers ?

This is so incredibly annoying because (I usually read 1 of those books in approx. 2 weeks beside my working and stuff) if you

finish one of those you gotta run out to get or order just the next one ... and every single time it costs :/

That is super lame. Can you buy them in a box set? I know that I bought the first four in a box set for my Kindle. Kind of a pain in the rear sometimes, but it works, and I think I spent $15 for the first 4, which isnt too bad. I still need to buy A Dance with Dragons, but I refuse to buy it until I am done with A Feast for Crows.

I did not know this about you.  I am impressed!

As I was reading through them I got to the point that I would finish a chapter and the next would be a character I didn't like, so I'd flip to the chapter after that to see if it was a character that I really liked, if so I'd power through to the next one.

There is a thread around here brainstorming where everything is going, who the 3 riders will be, etc. for those new to the boards.

I just started A Feast for Crows last night, but I barely got through the prologue because yesterday was also leg day :)

What are y'alls thoughts on the HBO show? They definitely add some scenes in that don't happen (or that we don't see). It's hard to translate a book that's from each characters point of view into a show without showing some extra scenes.

Oh snap, we got our very own bastard of the north!

As for the show, I have nothing but rave things to say about it. I've never seen casting or acting to be so dead on true to the book in any movie or tv series in my life.

Hell yeah, on both accounts.

I've been out of creating character names for a while, but for some reason I always choose a variation of "Mary" which is my real name. My skyrim character is Mariah. Also, I love me some Ygritte. "You know nothing, Jon Snow".

"You know nothing, Jon Snow" should probably be someone's signature.

Oh, and I didn't like Ygritte until I saw an episode with her in it. It wasn't how I pictured her at all...I liked their version much better.

I really liked the first book, then waited a while and got the second (long before the TV Show). I finished the second, but lost interest after that, too many characters and not enough plot development.  That can be a hard balance, as some books I've read have been too fast with not enough character development. Also, I remember thinking as I read "Why is it so important the author spend at least a sentence if not two describing everyone's shirt whenever they walk into a room?"  Not trying to denigrate the series, I know its a matter of personal taste for me, but I am wondering if anyone else had a similar experience reading the first two books of the series.

In book 3 there's like a bloodbath and a bunch of characters die (sorry for the mini-spoiler!), but he finds plenty of other characters to talk about. However, I do thoroughly enjoy the food descriptions.

LOL ASOIAF is my favourite book series so far and i only picked it up last year ! I agree the food porn is a bit intense but mostly paleo so that's kind of a plus :) They even brought out an ASOIAF cookbook i think lol. Anyway back to OP Feast does get better, trust me and you'll grow to like some of the new characters such as Victarion Euron and Asha. Also Cercei's chapters get extrememly funny when you realise how much of a paranoid phscho she is :) and to the person above who said they'd skim through chapters i know how you feel I hate Dany's chapters in Dance but i don't skip them cos i don't want to miss anything important

Have you tried and Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman books?

I am a huge Pratchett fan, have read all of his Discworld series and have read the Bromeliead trilogy.  Not as into Gaiman, tried to read good omens but coudln't get into it.

I've read a lot of Gaiman's stuff, but never anything of Pratchett's.  I had the same problem though, just couldn't get into good omens

Cersei is a nut job! I think it's hilarious that she's trying to rule and be taken seriously, but all of her tactics are like back-stabbing, sneaking, and what they call in the book "women's weapons" like poison. She's not wielding a sword, conquering on a battlefield, or commanding any kind of respect (like Asha). I love that she keeps telling herself, "but I'm the Queen Regent!!" She also has the maturity of a 13 year old.

In the first season of the show, they kind of made Dany sound like an annoying kid, "but I am a dragon!" But she's not like that in the books at all which is good. I actually kind of like Dany. She's surprisingly ruthless.

Yeah, my fav. characters are Dany, Arya, and Jon Snow. Because of that I had a terrible time with Feast for Crows (and at the time I read it, Dance didn't even have an expected publication date). Honestly I just kinda skimmed through the book the first time. Then like 3 years later when Dance was finally out I re-read it more in depth. I was excited for the new book, but I agree, Dany's chapter in that one were much much less interesting then her previous ones. I was kind of let down - I waited for years for this new release (which only got released near the time of the HBO show, I think to pull in extra fans, but I could be wrong) and then the book wasn't even that good. The first three are the best. Hopefully book 6 comes out without a 6 year gap. I'm worried with GRRM's old age he won't finish all 8 books (especially with an average of 5-6 years between publications). That would mean the rest of the series could potentially take  10-15 years to be released.
