Favourite Work-Out Songs

Recommended Posts

At the moment it's Boards of Canada/Sigur Ros/Explosions in the Sky etc... I find that really RAAHGHGHG-type music drains more energy than it gives me (even though I like lots of rahghghg music), so when I listen to that type of stuff it tends to be when I'm already pissed off or something and want to get rid of the excess energy.

Hopefully one day I'll get to a point epic enough that my workout warrants this :P :

I listen to a LOT of different music, but much of what appears on my iPod playlist for the gym is '80s hits and whatnot, alongside a bunch of other random favorites. Some of the ones that I've enjoyed on there the most as of late:

The Who -- "Love, Reign O'er Me"

Gladys Knight & the Pips -- "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"

Steve Winwood -- "Valerie"

Crowded House -- "Mean to Me"

Japandroids -- "Younger Us"

Steve Hackett -- "Clocks: The Angel of Mons"

Simple Minds -- "(Don't You) Forget About Me"

Tears For Fears -- "Head Over Heels"

Big Star -- "Feel"

Rare Earth (or the Temptations, either version!) -- "Get Ready"

George Harrison -- "Got My Mind Set On You"

Street Smart Cyclist -- "Hoods Up!"

LL Cool J -- "Mama Said Knock You Out"

Titus Andronicus -- "In A Big City"

Braid -- "The New Nathan Detroits"

Starship -- "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"

Beastie Boys -- "The Scoop"

Huey Lewis and the News -- "Perfect World"

Astronautalis -- "The River, The Woods"

Michael McDonald -- "Sweet Freedom"

Debarge -- "Rhythm of the Night"

various Whitney Houston 80s tracks

...and lots more...but those are probably my favorites.

I actually mostly listen to scores when I work out. Really epic stuff. Lots of Hans Zimmer, of course. It makes me feel like I'm the main character of a really cinematic movie and this is the training montage before the epic battle.

My taste in music is a little bit weird.

That is so awesome. I always think to myself when I watch movies how epic the music is... maybe I will look into some new workout tunes... :)

Guilty pleasure running song: Little Bad Girl by David Guetta

I listen to a lot of Gorillaz, Blur, Modest Mouse, and The Killers. Also, Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly are great for upping the intensity. Hmmm, M83 sometimes, Fall Out Boy, La Roux, Marina and the Diamonds, a few Kate Nash songs, Brand New... I love music.

Thanks to Bioshock Infinite I've discovered Nico Vega, which has some great workout songs.

For HIIT: The Mars Volta - De-loused in The Comatorium (all songs) or Knife Party

For easy run/strength: mostly Belle & Sebastian. Usually it's whatever songs I'm listening daily. Lately it's been Daft Punk new album and Welcome to Night Vale podcast (yes it's not songs but I enjoy it more than songs lately.

Depends what I'm doing. I don't like headphones so usually have to deal with the generic dance and RnB in the gym. I actually find electronica/EBM good for cardio work outs or something with a bit of funk for a running machine.

Down in the weights room there's a jukebox. It is all about the metal for lifting.

Bit of Rammstein - Ohne Dich raised my press by 10kg last week and Rob Zombie's cover of the Ramones' blitzkrieg bop raised another 10kg on my DL. I do however know there's Supercharger Heaven by white Zombie on there somewhere.

I am banned from driving in the car with this on. The drum kicks in and the speedo goes nuts. I've known a motorcross rider take a jump full pelt and fly over the top of someone who correctly slowed and took the roll down because he was listening to this song. If supercharger heaven comes on and I'm lifting, machining or doing cardio I'm gonna hurt myself.

Try for yourself!

Oh gosh, EVERYTHING. I listen to everything when I'm running from Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Shihad, Metallica, etc. to Violent Femmes, to Green Day, Mumford and Sons, Gorgol Bordello, Doobie Brothers, Silverchair, Queen, Them Crooked Vultures, Missy Higgins, Judas Priest, Elton John, John Butler Trio, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin ... could fill up a whole page really.

Anything that's kinda fast. I have two main playlists, one called work out, and one which was out second playlist for our wedding - not the slower first one for during the day. Otherwise I just shuffle all.

My ultimate power up song is Ace of Spades by Motorhead. Fucking love that song

At the gym I just have to listen to whatever they play. At my BAT class she usually plays a pretty good 80s mix. Oh but recently at the gym there's this remix song they play in weights class, totally not the kind of music I listen to at all but this one just gets me pumped. No idea what it is and I just tried searching online for it but I can't remember the lyrics, and I think it's probably branded to the gym I go to anyway I think judging by the others. Might sneak my phone in and shazaam it, lol.

I recognise one of the songs in the mix from the 80s and there's this guy kind of growl/rapping over it shouting about moving your body etc. Sounds stupid but it works on me

Some good suggestions posted above. A couple people mentioned epic soundtracks - I have the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, A beautiful Mind and a couple others - sometimes I listen to them also. Mostly not when working out, just at work, but sometimes when I'm running (though haven't run recently) if I' not in the mood for anything raucous

I have several songs I love to listen to when working out, and one song I just love so much I can't help but consider it my 'power' song.  A song that gives me a 'second wind' so to speak when I feel like I should stop in the middle of a workout:
