There and Back Again, a GODDESS' Tale.

Recommended Posts

I was feeling inspired, and moved by something that I read in Steve's profile... And realized when I was writing to him, that this was the Battle Log entry I've been trying to write for the last two weeks...

Though seriously, it could be that Bastille's album Bad Blood as a soundtrack played a big part...

Here is what I said to him:

Steve,

I know you get a bunch of messages from your followers... So I'll try (I say try, because I am a woman after all... And a long winded one at that) to keep this short. I joined because your newsletters are fantastically entertaining and completely on par with my personality, but for another reason that is far more important:

You make me feel empowered.

Society and our culture shames people for being outside of what is deemed "normal" size. Commercialized weigh loss programs try to make you feel like you need their program or you will fail...

You give messages of hope and encouragement for free. You have created an environment that encourages self-love, not shame...

What is the ultimate way to show love for yourself? To make yourself as healthy as you can, in any way that makes you happy and works to meet your goals for yourself...

I was looking at your profile to see what you were posting about, if you posted at all... And saw the ignorant post that you responded to... I started reading that person's post, and felt this heavy weight that maybe there are people on the board who think that way... But your response, and the response after from the man who lost almost 200 lbs, was like Thor himself had destroyed ignorance with one swing of his mighty hammer...

I have only been a forum member for what...two weeks? But the love, support, and encouragement I have felt was so overwhelming... I honestly didn't understand it, I've been so used to using self-hate to excuse my body size and shape.... And I'm finally beginning to realize that it isn't my size, it's my love for who I am... And doing what I can to love myself by treating my body like it deserves to be treated, like the goddess it is....

I feel empowered by you, and the remarkable transformation of the man that had posted with you.... What he said was very powerful too... (Especially when you are listening to Bastille's CD bad blood in he background lol)

I just wanted to say "Thanks." In the shortest way a forum nerd like me can.... In a really long message... Haha

My first goal can be considered met... I just didn't know that I had even made a goal... My road to leveling up my life starts at loving myself... And thanks to you and your forum's members... I think I've started that journey...

Okay, this may be ALL inspired by this album... But I feel empowered and ready to tackle my life's epic journey. Thank you for getting me started. I am excited to have you and your "minions" by my side the whole way.

Big Hugs,

Sara

Age: 29

Height: 5'8"

Weight: 233.4 lbs

Target/Goal: Goddess level

How will I get there? I am already there, I just never realized it.

What will I do to stay there?

1) Take care of myself: get a full night's sleep, work at a job I enjoy, love with my whole heart, and forgive those who have wronged me

2) Take care of my body through exercise: 3 days/week minimum with Bodyweight training at first, progressing to personal training with Clawed_Bear's trainer when he gets back from his vacation, and continue to Crossfit classes when my body is ready to handle the challenge.

3) Take care of my body through food: consume whole fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and other good foods...and yes, okay, I include some chocolate in there...

How often will I do this: Every day for the rest of my life (unless otherwise stated).

What I will do when I stumble: Look to the encouragement of the NF community, and take my inspiration from those who came before me.

(I think I also just wrote my first Battle Log entry!)

Welcome to the logs. Sounds like your on your right path. Looking forward to seeing you kick life's ass.

Pretty amazing what you can do with a frame of mind change. Don't forget to empower those thoughts with words to help actualize them. Lots of power in words. Good luck on your quest and have a great day.

Thanks Ghostwolf, you are right, it will be my struggle to stay positive with my outlook and words when things get tough.... I just really need to concentrate on why I'm doing all of this... It isn't to fit into a pair of jeans... It is to take care of myself, so that I have more years of wearing jeans....

Day one: it's only 10:45am, but hey! I fit into my wetsuit! I even felt like it was easier to get on than before... But that could just be my positive vibes....

My breakfast?

1 Scrambled Egg

1 Tomato

3 pieces of Broccolini (sautéed in Coconut Oil with some garlic and salt)

3 slices of Bacon

About half a liter (or 14ish oz) of water... Which I promptly am choking on as I type... Lol

I have to work in the classroom today, but am hoping to get some cardio in... Really need to find some fun things to do on my off days...

Bad News? I'm sick, and coughing (not just because I am choking on water...). Ever since I had pneumonia in 2007, I have thrown out my back almost every cold I get... I'm hoping that starting the exercises two weeks ago will help minimize the damage on my back... But I am still going to try to take it a little easier on the back exercises until the coughing subsides... I'll stick to legs and arms... :)

Ugh... Day 2... I collapse in a heap every time I cough... Back strength is minimal... Stretched out some of the tight muscles, not much working out sadly. :(

On the plus side, trainer is almost back from vacation, but has a tight schedule... Gonna try to squeeze me in... Hopefully my cough will subside by then!

Ok! Been off this for a week... And I'm still coughing like a mofo... But I think I am starting to turn the corner... Been cooking some interesting squashes and veggies to keep me eating healthy... Gonna start the easy stuff tomorrow I think... Just to get me on my schedule again....

I think that loving myself more has helped me make better eating choices, it is a lot easier to think "will this food show my body that I love it?" And it is easier to say no.... Rather than what I used to do, was say "really? You are fat, will this make you fatter?"

Feeling good about myself, even though nothing has changed weight wise... The outlook makes me feel good :)

What I learned this week: I've been doing squats wrong for my entire life.... Push presses take thought...and I am capable of more than I realize...

Started working out with a Personal Trainer, he rocks. He has already pushed me further than I would have by myself... I'm having a great time learning new stuff... And I got to meet up with a great Nerd and his wife too! What a great week! :-D

I want to update on a few things for those who haven't followed my challenges....(and as no one is following my Battle log...who knows how many will see this update...)

1) I just re-read my first post...and when I wrote it I weighed 233.4#....and....I'm now at 225.4....and I have never even celebrated this! Or noticed! I'm a bit shocked that I've lost almost 10#..... what is more important than numbers on a scale is this:

2) i'm doing cross fit once a week, and can handle more than that....but I want to work on lifting 1 day, and personal training for 1 day...and cardio one day (which hasn't been going as well....) I had never expected to be at this next point either:

3) I can see this goddess' muscles... i know...i never thought it were possible either...but there they are! in the mirror! every morning when I brush my teeth! It's awesome.

4) I had pneumonia, and my back didn't die.  My back has endured whereas last time I had pneumonia I needed 6 months of physical therapy...

5) My coach is my own personal superman... he's saved my life by giving me the functional strength and skills to make my life worth living.  Love him.

6) I made a great Nerd Friend...and lost him, all in the span of a month or two...and my promise to his memory has given me the strength and will to keep going and push myself to make sure I don't let him down.  I will be hiking on the east coast in his memory....and will be hugging some nerds along the way.  Never forgotten TexasToast. Never.

7)....So I've been doing Challenge after Challenge since I started here....and with 2 weeks before the next challenge, I think it is time I started logging my food again....I may try to update here as well...but we will see how interested any one is at reading it...haha

8) Oh, and I changed my "race" to "Viking"...though maybe I will change it to Viking Goddess...only because I'm not built to be an elf...I'm built to be strong, not lean... anyone notice the change in perception there? I do. I love myself so much more than I did when I started this... and I know what I am capable of and good at, whereas when I started, it was being "happy" with who I am...this is more..."I know who I am, and what I can do...lets do that better..." and I love that mindset.  Anyone care to join me in my quest to simply get better? :P

This goddess is signing out...for now.

From the "Murph" topic in cross training forum.

For those who don't know...

This is Christopher, aka TexasToast, and my first accountabilibuddy on NF... He was blown up in Afghanistan and suffered from PTSD and TBI... He didn't sleep, and when he did it was with a gun in his hand, he drank like a fish, and had few people to turn to when his "shit hit the fan"...

We would talk in the mornings, I would wake up and do some home exercises... And he would be awake with me, encouraging me... He had planned to hike the Appalachian trail with his friend, because it have him something to work towards...

This man couldn't get into the VA more than once every 3 months, which means he couldn't consistently stay on his meds, couldn't work because of his TBI...so he worked construction under the table... One thursday in November he got hit in the head with a 2x4....

I talked with him every day, except for the Friday morning after his accident... as I was packing for a vacation over thanksgiving...

That day, the smoke alarm went off while he was working out in a friend's garage...he ran off....and they found him a few hours later...

He was 22 years old, he has a younger sister who is 19, and two little brothers (10 and 12 I think?)...

It is because of him that I work so hard....and that I don't give up...because my angel of a marine won't let me.

I may not be in the best shape, but I'm determined... And I will complete murph, but it may take me a few weeks...

Today:

800m (.5 mile) row

[5 ring rows

10 push-ups (at about 45 degree angle)

15 air squats] x5

800m row

Time: 24:20

Left:

75 ring rows

150 push-ups

225 squats

1600m (1mile) of rowing

Coach won't let me do any more today, as we are doing CF tomorrow too...

I'll get there though. For him. Because that's what this day is about.

And I'll be on the AT this summer as well, in Virginia and Massachusetts, in case anyone wants to join ;)

Today was a great day... The best part was his nickname in the marines was "the Joker" and they randomly played that song by Steve Miller Band while I was working out... Freaking awesome.

Well, I have updates and such, I am taking a break from challenges I think... Not a lot of interest from other nerds, but I'll update here some!

Today I participated (with another nerd! And gym members) in Muscles for Marysville, an event to raise money for the victims families...

Never in my life have I stood in line and answered when someone calls "Athletes to the staging area" ... I've never been an athlete! Let alone work out with some absolutely amazing athletes! I didn't do as fantastic as them, but working out in an arena area, with people watching?!? Unheard of! It was kinda cool to think of how far I have come in just a year...

Yesterday, I went to a Halloween party at my gym... I had an absolute blast! I adore everyone there so much!

Forgot to add: the WOD for Muscles for Marysville was

AMRAP in 8 mins

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12...etc

Kettlebell swings

Goblet squats

Burpees

I used an 18# Kettlebell and finished my rounds of 10 about 10 seconds before the 8min mark... That was enough for me! :-P

Monday's workout:

Elizabeth

21-15-9

Cleans

Ring Dips

Sucked.

Hip acted up after my 21 cleans at only like 42#... Did hanging cleans for the rest, still sucked picking up the weight.

Did banded dips at a dip station, also sucked. Was awful at them...

Today had sore arms AND legs...

WOD:

Bench press

Squat snatches

5-4-3-2-1 for time...

No snatching for me... I did:

Hip extensions 20-16-12-8-4

Bench sucked too, should have been 80% my 1RM... So 65#, struggled with 63#.. I don't know what I was doing wrong, I kept banging the bumper plates on the rack...which made it hard to bench, obviously.... I don't know what I did wrong...

Tired of feeling hip pain every time I do anything that includes a deadlift motion.

I walked in to train with my coach this morning, and he had this sadistic smile on his face...

I asked what was up and he gave me a big, deep, belly laugh and said "Pay back."

And proceeded to stand on me, Captain Morgan style, while foam rolling certain hard-to-roll muscles inside my legs... It was extraordinarily painful, but in a good way. As a result, I can go up stairs without pain! Huzzah! Lol

We did some other stuff too, but that was the best part :-P

Let's sum up:

Feeling better hip-wise, worse school/work-wise... Socially got to see some of my favorite people this weekend, while husband was on a "retreat" for his business class...

Came home and we started bickering about the same things:

- I go to bed too early

- I work out too often during the week (thus why I go to bed early)

- working out with me isn't really a bonding experience

- therefore, because of the above, it's all my fault we aren't feeling very close lately....

- plus i don't want to have sex enough, which I don't.... Because my husband doesn't get home until 6-7pm, and plays video games while I make dinner, may eat with me, but goes right back to playing until I go to bed at 8:30 (meditate first, then sleep)

I'm not a person who enjoys having sex with a stranger... And that's what my husband feels like right now... I enjoyed my weekend because I had more company than I have all week, even though the person I live with was away... What does that say about the status of my marriage? :(

Not that anyone reads or cares... I'll just go back to writing to no one... So lonely and frustrated.

This looks like an old battle log, at least I thought it was...

It's the only one I have... :-P why would I have two?

I feel like I'm almost to a point in my overall health and fitness where I can do anything I want... Hiking, climbing, etc. And I'm in a point in my marriage where I have to sacrifice my health and fitness to save it... And I don't feel like that is fair...and I don't know that I want to do that... Which only leaves another alternative that I can't even begin to fathom.

Sent from Tapatalk, all errors are the app's fault! ;-)
