The Job Thread.

Recommended Posts

What do we all do for work? I'm curious to see the job diversity around here and how people schedule their fitness activities around their work.

I used to be a network "engineer" for a large cable company, maintaining and upgrading cable modem head-end facilities in NY and VT, it burned me out and I got fat over the years (5'9" 225lbs)...sitting on my butt. I sold real estate for a few years which was interesting and sometimes very rewarding, but it's no way to provide for a family as one's sole source of income. Just before the real estate market tanked in 2007 my former employer (from way back) sent me an email asking if I'd like to come back to work testing jet engines and I jumped at the opportunity. This is what I did in the USAF and for about 5 years after leaving the military. Now that I've been back at this job I've lost weight and FROZEN MY BUTT OFF every winter. I hate winter, other than that this place rocks. There are only three people who work here including myself, and we have regular down time where I can go for a walk or get some exercise mid-day. The work itself is physical but mostly just time on my feet turning wrenches until it's time to run the tests.

I painted our test nose cone last summer during some down time.

I know nothing about nose cones, but I suddenly want to tinker with them.

In college I worked as an EMT, and I'm still certified as one now.  Original plan was to join the Coast Guard, but an old history of asthma meant I'd have to wait another year to apply.  To try something different in the meantime, I joined a tech company with a couple of my friends.  They're engineers, but I'm in sales.  Eventually I became disillusioned with the Coast Guard and decided I'd need to hit the drawing board again.  Meanwhile, opportunities were opening left and right at my company and I realized there was value in staying here a little longer, despite me being hotheaded.

I'm currently certifying as a personal trainer as something to do on the side, so I can still feel like I'm helping people while I make my plans!

Currently a CADD operator for signal engineering firm, in school for Electrical Engineering (Graduate in about 4 months), and I scrap recycle on the side. Looking at getting into refining as well, but that's still in the research stage.

Gotta be fun to play with jet engines...

Swimming teacher in the summer, and although it is only volunteer work an ambulance officer. My goal is to go to Uni in the next two years and study nursing, my dream job would be to be a Paramedic.

Volunteer counts. Especially for something like that.

My main job is working in a hardware store, doing a bunch of behind the screens kind of things such as putting things together (BBQ, wheelbarrows, table setting) and unpacking. I also work in a take out place cleaning, and I am a SES (state emergency service) volunteer, which is fun, we basically cut up trees that have fallen down, sand bagging when flooding, search/rescue and because we are a country unit we get the job of cutting people out of cars

Work as a shift scheduler for a steelmaking and rolling steelworks. And they don't pay me enough for what I do either. Plus I volunteer with St John Ambulance Australia as a regional manager for event management, IT, and youth engagement. But what I really want to do (and truly love doing) is write novels.

Awh man, you guys all have such exciting jobs.

I, however, keep the world turning with a constant supply of caffeinated, steamy-milk beverages. (I'm a barista. Cafe bitch. nyeah.)

I have a diploma in Digital Media that I will get around to using one day however.

Barfly... You are awesome!

I work in a shop specialising in crystal specimens and fossils.  Means I have a lot of knowledge that is utterly useless in real world terms so I'm probably utterly unemployable anywhere else, but hey, I get to travel to the States and France to go to mineral shows.  :D

And I can tell people that I really know my schist. :P

Right now I'm co-oping as a Lean Process Engineer, which is what I'm hoping to do after I graduate in May. I also would really like to get involved in human factors and ergonomics engineering, I think that would be the coolest thing I could get involved with. Unfortunately I don't really have any leads on where I could do that. If anyone has any ideas hit me up.

I'd also like to be a professor of engineering after I retire, but that means getting a Phd, which I'm not too sure about.

I've been finding myself getting back into that stuff, used to have a rock collection as  a kid, geodes, rock tumbler... whole 9 yards. Then life happened and got away from it...

So I can't remember schist, but I'll get it back...
