Childofscorn Chooses the Road Not Taken

Recommended Posts

Hokay.  So those of you who know me from chat know that I talk a good game.  I know what I need to do to lose weight, to get stronger, and to live a happier and more fulfilling life.  AND YET I DON'T DO THESE THINGS.  Wtaf.  I need to stop being an armchair general and hop down into the trenches with my brothers and sisters.

To this end, here is what I am going to accomplish over the next few months:

-track my food and exercise as consistently as possible on MyFitnessPal (i'm childofscorn on there obv.)

-wear my FitBit every day, and report my daily steps from the day before, regardless of how abysmal that number is.

-bring my eating habits more closely inline with where they need to be.  Specifically, this means for me:

->NO DAIRY

->no fast food (defined as anything with a drive-thru)

->lowering sodium intake

->increasing protein

So yeah.  There it is.  I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a road and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Day 1:

See, this is why I just need to eliminate fast food from my diet altogether.  I had a nice salad with plenty of protein for breakfast and finished it off for lunch.  And then i went out and ran errands, and was starving on the way home, so i stopped at McDonald's and grabbed food there, and by the time i got to my house (7-8 minutes away) I literally could not remember what I had ordered.  -_-  I came in with 500 calories to spare, but double my RDA of sodium. I can do better than this.  I AM better than this.

On the plus side, I puttered around in my mom's garden today, which was fun! Weeding, hauling water buckets, digging up and reburying water lines, all that fun stuff :)

Day two was more successful, i hung out with my bestie all day ^_^ and I knew that I was going to be staying up all night at my husband's grandmother's, so I stopped at the grocery store on the way here and got some healthy snacks.  I also ended up getting in more steps today than the day before \o/

on the downside, i've been having some pain in my shoulder that I think is a result of arthritis D: heat helps, and aleve helps.  I should be seeing a doctor soon, so I'll have her take a look at it when I do.

day three - cleaned the shit out of some windows this morning at mom & dad's, which was actually fun once i made my own window cleaner that worked better than the stuff my mom had.  started getting sick to my stomach this afternoon though, and have spent the majority of the evening throwing up, or trying not to. :/ I'm hoping it's food poisoning and not a stomach bug, b/c at least i won't be contagious that way.

In other news, i've totally been slacking on homework and question writing. :P I feel like I've had writer's block for about 2 months now, and even when I try to force some questions out, what i manage to produce is just awful.  I'm hoping it goes away soon, else i'm going to have to resort to more extreme measures.

Planning on starting paleo with my husband on the first, so between now and then i'll be coming up with a feasible meal plan that will A: stick with out budget, and B: be something that my husband will actually eat.  lol at least in the beginning, it won't be 100% paleo, because I'll be relying on some stuff that we already have, just to avoid wasting anything, and saving money by using what we've already got.  Ideally, as we go, we'll figure out which meals we both like and which ones we can pass on next time, and that will make it all easier.

Okay, so days 4, 5, and 6 have been spent in a drug-induced haze. :D

So, I have issues with my temporomandibular joint and it's been acting up for the last three days, badly enough that I'm actually taking pain medication for it.  Given my low tolerance for medication in general, this pretty much means that productivity is shot.  I've spoken with my mom about it (who, btw, is crazy awesome) and she's going to see if her dentist has any openings any time soon.  I was originally diagnosed with this back in....april?  may possibly?  anywho, went to the ER, was told to follow up with an oral surgeon, but didn't because money.  I've been managing it pretty well on my own, but i fucked up and had some cheetos on day 3, and I think between that and the throwing up, it's caused a pretty bad flair-up.  Anywho, hopefully they'll be able to do something.  if not, I'm seriously considering just removing my jaw. >.>

In other news, I did manage to get a paleo menu worked out for the next two weeks, and the husband and i are going to the store tomorrow to get some groceries, which is really cool because he HATES going to the store, and almost never comes with me. ^_^ yay!

childofscorn, I know this pain. I also have problems with my TMJ. I would get lock-jaw all the time.

Before you do any drastic oral surgery, ask your dentist about grinding or clenching bruxism. It turns out that I clench in my sleep and that it was putting some nasty pits in my molars. I got a bite guard for it which does help, because it prevents those muscles from clenching all the way every night. That's why your TMJ hurts so badly, because it's like those muscles are in a constant state of DOMS and never get a rest. (What pisses me off is that my jaw locked open WHILE I was in the dentist chair before they decided to DO anything about it. Like, for fucks sake, if you see pits in my molars, shouldn't you bring that up instead of waiting for me to get lockjaw? Holy crap.)

I've been lifting weights with my jaw for many years. I chew a lot of gum which has kept my teeth healthy and strong and has given me enough jaw strength to compete with a hyena. If you chew gum, this could make your TMJ issues worse. So don't do that.

Use surgery as a last-ditch option, but it's probably because you're clenching or grinding at night. A bite guard will help after a few weeks -- it has with me, at least.

And hey, can I get a copy of your paleo menu for the next 2 weeks? I'm curious and these threads are all about satisfying my curiosity. Clearly.

So, another update, I'm still dealing with jaw pain, but at least SOME of the pain that I've had was a result of an infected tooth that's been taken care of with antibiotics.  What's left is partly due to the fact that my bite doesn't line up correctly in the molars, but mostly a result of the fact that I clench my jaw when i'm stressed, which is always.  However, the tooth pain will be further taken care of on the 20th when I go for the first of what i fear will be several root canal sessions. :P

In other news, paleo menu is working out really well for our family, although I've had to make me some non-paleo stuff to eat because I have to have softer foods right now.  I'm okay with that though, since I kind of figured I'd need something along those lines and worked it into the grocery budget.

So, since Razzy asked for it, here's our two week Paleo dinner plan (I'm just listing dinners since we basically do eggs and sausage or bacon for breakfast, and then leftovers for lunch)

Beef Stew

Roast Chicken & Root Veggies

Buffalo Chicken & steamed veg

Crock Pot Taco Soup

Meatballs

Sweet Potato Salmon Cakes

Pot Roast (although we actually used a pork roast instead of beef, because it was so much cheaper)

Brinner (Breakfast for dinner)

Meatloaf

Pork Stew

Chicken Nuggets

Vegetable Soup

Spicy Tuna Cakes

Paleo Pumpkin Pancakes

Btw Razzy, here's the link to my Paleo Pinterest board, which has at least some of these recipes on there.  If you want the recipes for anything else, just ask and I'll try to remember it ^_^

Other than all ^that, I've been kind of stressed because I've got some freelance writing stuff that needs to be turned in just a few days from now and i'm REALLY behind on it, because i've spent the last three-ish weeks under the influence of some type of pain medication or another.  The problem with this is that i'm SO sensitive to pain medication that anything stronger than Aleve basically knocks me on my ass.

I had a heart-to-heart with myself this morning and told myself that I could either deal with the pain for a few days and get my assignment done (and get paid for it!), or I could take the medication and tell them that I can't finish it in time, and let them farm it out to someone else.  So I've decided that I need the money, and can stand the pain for a few more days, so if I'm a crabby asshole to anyone between now and the 20th, I sincerely apologize and will make it up to you once I've turned all this in.

^My happy dance.

Clenching when stressed SUCKS. I do that as well. I blame my professors.

As for wanting recipes: ALL OF IT. The Taco Soup sounds very interesting and I really want to try it. I suck at making menus so, even though this thread is all about supporting and helping you, you've saved my bacon this day.

(I also really wanted to use that picture)

If you're up for home remedies, I can help you with your tooth problem

There's a really OLD remedy that my great-grandmother used. (She lived through WWII in Belgium and had to 'make do' with a lot of stuff). Now, it may taste weird, but get yourself a bottle of clove oil. Soak a small piece of paper towel (or snip up a very soft cloth, if you prefer), wad it up, and stick it in the back of your mouth right next to the painful molars. The clove oil is so strong it will overpower the nerve and you won't be able to feel a thing. Gets right down to the nerve. Used this trick a couple of times and my mom told her friend about it when her son had a root canal and was in the same boat you are, with very high sensitivity to pain meds. You don't need a whole lot of clove oil for this to work. When the pain starts coming back, spit out the wad and make a new one.

I know it sounds odd, but trust me: It works!

Okay, so not so much with the regular updating. :D

I've been doing better since last update.  The antibiotics have taken care of the tooth pain, and the soft foods have really helped with the jaw pain, so everything on that front is going well.  Those of you who I've talked to in chat this past week probably know that I've been dealing with withdrawals from the pain meds though.  For those of you who didn't see that convo, here's the rundown:

- I'm crazy sensitive to pain medication, so a really small dosage can throw me for a loop.

- when i saw the dentist, he gave me a prescription for vicodin and told me to take it instead of tramadol, which I'd been taking for ~2.5 weeks at that point

- I haven't gotten anything accomplished the whole time I've been on the pain meds, because of aforementioned sensitivity, so I'm really behind on writing

When last we spoke, I had decided that I was going to stop taking the pain meds to get shit accomplished and just deal with the pain until the 20th.

Well.

Apparently I had been taking them long enough that when I stopped, i began to have withdrawal symptoms.  yay!  so I was kind of a heinous bitch to everyone and everything for the last 5-6 days, but I've come around the other side now and finally feel like a (relatively) normal, clear-headed human being again.  \o/

Hokay, so between now and the 20th, I'm going to work on getting some dinners made up and stashed in the freezer with clear, well written directions for reheating so that while i'm dealing with root canal pain my husband doesn't starve.  For those of you who are curious, I'm going to be using some of these recipes: http://jamkatspaleo.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/paleo-slow-cooker-freezer-meals/  as well as repeats of previously mentioned ones.  Nothing exciting, I know, but will keep him from living on ramen noodles, which is what he'd do otherwise. ^_^
