Behind the Bar - The Homebrewers' Haven

Recommended Posts

Funny thing happened - apparently about half the people in my accountabilibuddies group, myself included, dabble in homebrewing! Anyone else around here brew their own beer? Any good secrets you have lying around that you'd like to share? New brew you just finished that you want to show off? Lets see it!

I'm currently waiting on the ingredients for a German style hefeweizen to show up in the mail. Hopefully I should be able to get it brewed by the end of the weekend :)

Nice! I like mead. A friend of mine brews it too. Doesn't mead take a very long time to settle after brewing though?

It can take a while, definitely, but there are ways around it.  Both chilling and the use of fining agends (clarfiers...) can help drop the yeasties out of suspension more quickly.

I'm hoping to brew up a pineapple mead later this week, so let me know when you start your prep work and I can hopefully point out some tricks!

I'm a newbie to the homebrewing scene, but very excited for it! Got a batch of Scottish ale that I get to toss into bottles soon, and once that's out of the way I've got some Pumpkin ale ready to brew. Not sure what I'll be making after that, though. Maybe a ginger beer? Hmmm...

Man, I'd like to try mead too someday! I'd love to whip up a blackberry mead or something if I get a chance.

Questing!

I started home brewing earlier this summer. Did my first batch, which I drank the last bottle of yesterday in fact (very sad, it was good beer) and am planning on brewing a new batch within the next few weeks. We're looking at doing an ESB, as that has been recommended to me a couple of times. We're also doing a full mash this time around, the last batch was done with extracts, and while a smart way to do a first batch and learn how our setup needed to be done, full mash is what we both wanted to do (I brew with my father-in-law).

I wish I had the space to do a full mash. Sadly, 3 college guys renting an apartment isn't quite gonna have the space for that haha. What kind of brew was your first one? Glad you liked it :D

True true, a traditional mead can take a long time to age.  If you make a fruit mead, though, those extra nutrients help the yeast devour the sugars more quickly and you can get a tasty product in a couple of months.  Definitely worth the wait :)

Uh, kinda. Dad brews beer and killer good cider. I play around with kombucha (fermented tea), I don't think I'm patient enough to do beer, I've seen the brewmaster's job, I don't want it. There is a ton of equipment. My set up is a few half gallon glass jars, tea, sugar, and a symbiotic culture of yeast and bacteria (SCOBY). It's pretty hard to screw it up and I can flavor them with mango, strawberries, whatever, it's a fun hobby.

I just found out about kombucha, and it sounds pretty neat.  Have you had any issues with contamination?

First brew was called a 'Summer Stout' and it was basically a really dark ale that had a lot of sweet caramel flavour and aroma to it, but was super light to drink. Was perfect for a hot day. It was an extract recipe, in Swedish, but I can translate and post if there's interest.

This too, shall pass.

Y'all are on Untappd, right?

Also, get this podcast, and listen regularly ... it's good

Think you missed posting a link their Rand.  And check my sig for a link to my Untappd account.

Wife and I have been homebrewing for quite awhile (she longer then I).  That said, lately our taps have been running on 'E' as the kid has limited the time you have to brew.

As for tips, I'd say learn to use Oak Chips.  Super easy way to add the complex flavors of a "bourbon-barrel" for home brewers.  Basically, just soak some oak chips in bourbon for awhile and then put them into the beer when it's fermenting.  Most of the time we do the 2nd stage fermenter.

That or just add a splash of bourbon to the beer.  Works great when brewing stouts and barleywines.  :)

I like this idea, thanks!

So Brewdog is definitely homebrewer friendly. They've released a set called IPA is Dead, which is essentially 4 beers brewed exactly the same, except each one uses a different hop (all are single-hop) so that you can taste each one and determine how their flavours affect things. Very cool of them, I plan to pick it up as soon as I can.

I am going to be taking my first stab at home brewing in the next couple weeks. Looking forward to it, but I would like peoples opinions on Plastic Vs glass bottles. I know glass is preferable, but if the taste difference that noticeable?

I personally can't say.  Never used plastic.  I would imagine it would depend greatly on how long you were going to age in the bottles.
