Working through work boredom

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

So, I'm trying to clear out the debris on my desk and realized something.  I have the worst attention span some days - honestly, could not focus on anything.

My problem, I realize in part comes from being bored.  While I enjoy some aspects of job (I'm a buyer at manufacturing company), there are parts that I loathe (namely filing).

Some days, putting on some good music via Pandora.com is all I need to stay on task.  Other days, nothing seems to work.

Therefore, my question to all of you is this - How do you stay focused at work? Especially when your mind is everywhere else.

Thank you.

As much as I hate to say it... grin and bear it. I look at it like I used to look at hills back when I ran cross country, it's the part of the race you don't look forward too and when you get to it there's a quick moment where you just go... "F Me" and you start up the hill. When you get to the top though, and it's all done you now get the superspeed run down the other side.

I just put some music on, and just get through it. The music doesn't help the focus, but it helps drown out some things around the office that can be additional distractions.

Someone might have something better, but that's all I got....

When I was at my last job, I had a lot of flexibility in terms of goofing off online or on my phone. So I started to do a reward system to make sure I was actually working (at least most of the time). 30 minutes of work or X amount of emails answered, and I could check my social media or look up something fun for 5 minutes.

Now that I'm in school I have to do the same thing with my studying, although I will say it was a lot easier to do at work when I didn't have all my fun home things to distract me. On the plus side, my floors have never been this clean!

You could always pretend you are on secret mission (to file paper work). Come up with a back story and everything.

Thanks guys.

I'm having to grin and bear it most of the time - like insanity suggested.

K-Prime - I would so fall off that reward wagon.  Good idea, I just know myself well enough that it wouldn't work for me.

kaelvan - I do occasionally have story time in my head while at the filing cabinet but I must make a weird face or something because I tend to get odd looks when people walk by.

I'm trying to mix the filing in with desk tasks so that I'm up and down at work.  Also this let's me change tasks if I notice my attention span is shrinking.
