Random epiphany of the day: "At some point, you just have to throw stuff away."

No matter how much effort you put forth, some things just will not be easily re-purposed, if at all.  And in the grand scheme of cost-benefit analysis, why exactly are you putting forth effort to save, recycle, or re-purpose this widget?  Is the return on your invested effort worth the benefit you get from saving or re-purposing it?

I use a lot of protein powder - I had four of those silly little plastic scoops in my "supplement accessories" tub.  Why?  In case the first one broke?  Because it was perfectly useful, functional, and it was a waste to throw it away even though I had no use for it, and it was clutter in my space.

I could donate it to Good Will, but what would they do with it?  Why would someone else buy a plastic scoop that costs, quite literally, pennies?  Plastic recycling?  That would be cool, if they took them.

That is exactly my problem! I don't want to throw out the random things, but there's nothing else to do with them. I'll have to draw strength from this thread.

I cleaned out so much stuff today! Mostly clothes and shoes. I'm making progress! Tomorrow I'm going to sell back some of my gently worn items to this store that buys stuff like that. So we'll see how much money I can get from that! Even if it is $10 I'll be happy because I'm one step closer to less shit and I'm $10 richer!

I'll keep everyone update on that front.

I recently got rid o all my dvd's... (probably close to 400 of them) I boxed them all up and put them in a closet for 6 weeks... no one asked for them that entire time so I donated them to a friend who works with kids programs with the intenion that any he didn't use would go to salvation army...

it was about 6 months later that I realized I still had the dvd player... donated that to the same friend...

in between those two things I culled my game collection probably in third... and the rest will be going with the kids when they move...

I am culling my clothes and dishes... in my house it's mostly the kids who are hoarders... I am slowly convincing them to get rid of things...

Portland has a list of very specific items they do, and don't, take.

I'll have to look again and see on the off-chance I'm mis-remembering, but they won't take plastic bottles under 8 oz, which suggests to me they wouldn't be bothered with a plastic scoop of 8 oz or less.

Don't they have people that will go through your bins and actually not empty them if you put something in the wrong one? I feel like that was mentioned to me before.

I say no, but let me qualify - the plastic and newspaper and cardboard and what all else go into a large blue trashcan.  So I imagine they *could* rummage through that big thing, but I kind of doubt it.

The smaller, yellow bins for glass - they might go through because it's an easy inspection to see if it all qualifies or not, but I don't know if they actually do it.

Now, homeless folks will sometimes go down the street and help themselves to choice recycling before the company comes through - I had one enterprising soul come up to the porch to help himself.  That was strongly discouraged.

Very cool.  It reminds me of the "One Bag" website: http://www.onebag.com/

And Rick Steves' travel philosophy - although he doesn't tout it specifically: https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/packing-light/packing-smart

Of course, the trick is realizing this is possible in every day life as well.  Or so I keep telling myself.

To be fair, you have pressing concerns that can't really be addressed by someone merely passing through a life experience.

Different standards apply. :D

Wow. I know I always pack too much for trips but that is a serious achievement right there.
