Roller derby and lifting things up

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm an intruder, I suppose. I don't know how to say this - but I'm not really a nerd. In the modern sense anyway - I've never read a comic, I've not really played a video game since Grim Fandango first came out and I can take or leave Star Wars - but I do wear bin lid glasses and have a degree in Maths though, so I guess I'm classic nerd. Vintage, if you will.

But, I am a wee girl, and traditional work out communities intimidate the hell out of me, so I'd like to hang out with the nerds.

Four years and a bit ago I'd not done any exercise for almost a decade. Four years ago today I played in my first roller derby game. I decided if I want to be good at this, I should actually get fit, so I ran 5km a bunch of times because that's how ladies get fit, right? I joined a gym and in the induction they didn't show me the weights. The guy, a guy who works in a gym, genuinely said he didn't want me to get 'bulky' and then chatted me up whilst I used the treadmill for 20 minutes! At the time though, I didn't know any better. I spent three years at that gym just running, spinning, and avoiding that guy. Imagine how fit I'd be now if he'd done his job correctly!

So in November last year I switched gyms and got a personal trainer who immediately led me into the big boys area, and it's one of the best things I've ever done. My trainer has moved me onto quick bursts of cardio and jumping/darting/ducking type stuff as it's more relevant to improving my roller derby game, so now I do any heavy lifting in my spare time. For fun! I've had to have three weeks off because of a minor operation, and it's killed me. I've spent my days reading fitness articles, and fueling a potentially unhealthy obsession with Samantha Wright.

I'm here because I want to do more, both to facilitate my roller derby game and the fun heavy stuff,  and I want to learn more about what I'm doing. I want to eat properly to facilitate what I'm already doing, and I don't know where to begin with that as I'm a real burgers and pizza kind of girl, so I really need support on the paleo stuff, and it's difficult to find stuff that's not a. patronisingly written by some bro somewhere or b. patronisingly written by a super fit mum who is literally juggling three kids whilst writing her paleo blog. And I use the word literally probably.

Hello! I'm new too and many moons ago used to skate roller derby. It's awesome!

Totally get you on this one. Hoping we both find lots of much better info on this site :)

Welcome to the rebellion.

We nerds are fairly accommodating folks, so don't feel like you're going to get shunned for not being able to/interested in discussing the finer points of The Force. :)

There is a ton of info here on just about everything.

For the nutrition bit: While lots of people on this site are paleo, there are plenty of us that aren't, so depending on how far you want to go down that rabbit hole, there is probably someone in a similar boat. Check out the nutrition section for all kinds of info or to ask any specific questions you may have.
