[4/6-4/19] LoEN hosts a Walk-a-thon (26 miles in 2 weeks!)

Recommended Posts

Since there is a two-week gap between challenges this time, how about something simple and fun to keep yourself active in the down time?

Even though it looks like it's only a 1-week break, after all, do you want something to keep your motivation and activity level up between now and the next challenge?

The League of Extraordinary NERDS (accountabilibuddy group) has a solution for you! Join our Walk-a-thon. It's like a marathon, except that it lasts two weeks, can be fit into nearly any schedule, and you don't have to run unless you want to.

The goal: Between 12:01am Monday 4/6 and 11:59pm Sunday 4/19, walk, run, or jog 26 miles. That's less than 2 miles per day. Any foot-powered locomotion counts. Walking around at work? Counts. Jogging on a treadmill? Counts. Sprinting to catch the bus? Counts. Just use your feet to go a total of 26 miles in 2 weeks.

This is obviously more of a challenge for generally sedentary people, or people who really only lift/swim/bike/do yoga/other non-foot-based activity for their usual exercise. Most Scouts probably won't need 2 weeks to get this done! But that's okay. If you prefer to set a longer goal than 26 miles for the two weeks, just be sure to mention that in your first post. I will be tracking the leaderboard by percent complete of your desired total, which makes it more fair for all.

(If you feel that you are incapable of reaching 26 miles in 2 weeks, but would still like to particpate at your current fitness level, it is also possible to adjust your total goal distance down. However, I would encourage you to at least try for the 26 miles. 2 miles per day is actually not as hard as it sounds!)

How to track: Although it is ideal to use a pedometer to track exactly how far you've gone, not everyone has a pedometer. Just do your best to accurately count how far you've gone. You could try using google maps to check up your loop around the neighborhood, for example, to find out how long it really is. If you must, just estimate your walking speed and multiply that by how long you walked. Use whatever tools you have.

I'm in!  Excited to have something to occupy myself inbetween the two challenges.

Is the challenge intended to be all the distance you cover in a day (walking to and from my car, the kitchen, the bathroom, etc.)?  Or just designated walks?  Or whatever each person wants it to be?

I got a FitBit Zip just before the current 6WC started, so I know I'm averaging around 4 miles/day for everything (daily activity + designated exercise).  But since I don't "go for a walk" everyday, I'm sure my average miles/day in designated walks is much, much lower, and 26 miles would be a decent challenge.

Okay, I'll go with total daily miles according to my FitBit.  I just calculated my average over the past 28 days, and its 4.79, so I'm going to push myself for a 5 mile average in this challenge = goal of 70 miles.  Let's do this!

I'm gonna go with the 26 miles, but I'm not going to count the regular walking I do to and from classes each day. If I start feeling like I could do more, I'll bump it up! But I'd rather start out with an attainable goal. :)

Welcome to the walkathon, RD.

Geez, I feel like I'm the only one counting every single step and still considering 26 miles a challenge.

As long as it's a challenge for you and will get you to a better place than you are now, that's all that matters.

Also, I rack up a ton of steps when I play tennis, so I'm not really walking that many miles.  Silly FitBit just thinks I am.

Sign me up! I would love to work on walking more. Currently, I just take casual strolls around the neighborhood, but it would be fun to have a goal to work towards. I'll use a combo of my pedometer (Jawbone MOVE) and the Runkeeper app to keep track of my miles. :D

Yeah I just saw that, and I'm a little worried. It's going to be my first challenge ever and I don't want to overwhelm myself with too many tasks to keep track of. (One thing at a time and all.) I will still be walking, but I think I need to back out of the challenge unfortunately (sadface) UNTIL NEXT TIME hahaha. I will still pop in though and root you guys on.

Rack up those miles! :D

What the heck, I'll join.  Anything to keep me going in this darn walking boot!  I think I can manage 26 miles before the next challenge.  Hey maybe all that walking will help me decide what my next challenge goals should be.

I think maybe if it's something we want to do, we can make walking part of our next challenge. So instead of adding things on, this Walk-a-thon will be more incentive to do what you want to do anyways. That's probably what I'm going to do! :)

I've decided to only count the miles I purposely do through my runkeeper app.  I do spend quite a bit a time on my feet at work but I never really bother trying to track that.  Plus after checking, I apparently walked almost 92 miles (OMG!) in March and I've already clocked in 16.6 for April so I think I should be able to easily do 26 in two weeks.

Can I play?!  I was walking this morning and thinking how I missed the fun of the PVP challenge. Logging the miles makes it feel like more of an accomplishment.

Sure, it's not too late to start! Are you going for the basic 26 miles?

I walked 2 miles today, meaning I'm right on par. I'll be updating the leaderboard in a bit. How's everyone else doing so far?

Day 1: 4.65 miles (most of it came from 3 miles on the treadmill over lunch break)

Nice! Updated first post with leaderboard. For the moment, I seem to be in the lead. Probably going to drop off a bit today, though, since I have a doctor's appointment and also a lot of work to do, so I won't have time to walk. Will be trying to catch up over the weekend.
