I've started and stopped this topic so many times, trying to write a fitting introduction. It started to get waaaaay too deep, so let's try once more:

I'm Moxie, I'm 35, married, and I'm overweight. Actually obese, morbidly obese at that. I need to lose around 100-150 pounds, truth be told. It isn't for lack of trying that I've gotten to this point - I wasn't a fat kid, but became a fat teenager and a fat adult. I've tried to lose the weight lots of times. Low-calorie, low-fat, low-carb, weight training, cardio, elliptical, yoga, you name it, I've probably tried it. I think the real issue is trying to do everything at once - trying to make a huge change in diet and exercise at the same time seems to get me every time. I usually last about 2-3 days. Thats one reason that I'm impressed with the Nerd Fitness approach, making small changes one at a time to develop new habits without throwing everything off-kilter. I work in IT and I'm a gamer, so right now I sit most of the day and night. I need to get moving AND get my food intake under control, but I'm hoping to do this with baby steps.

I do know a few things: I'm addicted to sweets & pasta (bad). I hate cardio but I LOVE strength training. I like feeling stronger and the adrenaline rush after a good bodyweight or free weights workout. Machines are complicated and a pain in the butt. I don't want to go to a gym - at-home will work with my schedule better, and my last few experiences with gyms were not at all positive.

My "why" for doing this is simple: I'm tired of being the fat girl. Ever since high school I've had to deal with all of the pain and baggage that goes along with that. The rejection, the self-consciousness, not being able to do the things I want to do in life. I want to be able to ride rollercoasters again, to be able to run up and down stairs without being winded, to go out to dinner with friends without having issues squeezing into a booth. I'd like to be able to run... maybe not a marathon, but in a charity 5k. Right now we have no kids - I'm actually so fat that I'm medically infertile. That is a pretty darn good reason in itself.

So let's do this! LONG LIVE THE REBELLION!

Welcome to the rebellion!

Slow and easy wins the race, as they say. Since weight loss is your main objective, diet is the first thing you'll want to fix. Counting calories, by yourself or with My Fitness Pal, is not the most stimulating thing in the world, but it works.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome welcome! There's a reason so many people say diets fail/don't work- because the successful changes aren't diets, just lifestyle changes. You just need to figure out what you can live with in your likes and preferences to reach your goals.

Also, there's a lovely thread bouncing around here somewhere, either Womens Training or Weight Loss forum areas on women with 100+ to lose, they're a pretty awesome bunch who can probably give you some fantastic advice on how to go about the beginning of your adventure :D

Heeeey! Welcome to the rebellion! Might I say, it's great to have you here! Congratulations on taking the hardest first step to change! Seriously, you're awesome! Also, don't be afraid of failing when it comes to health. Be afraid of giving up! You can do this and you will show that fat what you're made of *flipstable*

^I hope that wasn't mahogany^

Ooh! How about the beginners body weight exercises? Like, seriously, they're UBER helpful. Also, the Zombies! Run app! Ooooooomg! They make running so much funnnnnn, you know? With the zombies behind you(not really but you hear them coming at you and your objective is to simply evade them by running even faster). Oooooooh, it's finally free and it got me so tingly (whereamIgoing)

Also, my fitness pal is a great way of counting calories and keeping tabs on your snacking (or if you hate technology; a log book works too!)

Welcome and congrats on making that first step.  Diet is 80% of losing weight.  So what everyone said is great.  Figure out where you are now and maybe try some calculators to see what you should be getting and how much of a deficit you can live with.  At first I don't think it will make much difference what plan you follow - paleo, low fat, low carb - just start a calorie deficit you can live with for now and start that.

Thanks all for the awesome responses!

Right now I'm working on cutting out the liquid calories and just logging everything I eat on MyFitnessPal so that I can see where I'm at. It's not real pretty but it's educational. I have breakfasts under control, GNC makes a delish protein shake that is quick, actually filling, and will hold me over until lunch just fine, so that's good. My next step will be to start integrating veggies into my diet - I'm not a big veggie fan, but I'm going to start with the ones I know I can live with - broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus, etc. Hopefully I'll find some new yummy ways to cook them. THEN, I'll start weaning myself off the processed white carbs... it needs to be done, but slowly.

I'll definitely check out the beginners bodyweight workout and the zombies run app, those both sound great! :D

If you like broccoli and cauliflower, you might like some of the other veggies in the cruciferous family: green cabbage, red cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, etc. Make your own coleslaw! (no mayo, of course, but still...)

Nutrition wise, they're powerhouses loaded with potassium and vitamin C, especially Kale. Anyway, roasting with a splash of olive oil and a clove of garlic or two works with just about all vegetables. So tasty!
