Salem, Oregon Question

Recommended Posts

Happy Friday!

My husband has a potential job opportunity in Salem and we were wondering if anyone could give us some inside info about what it is like to live there. Previously we were focusing on moving into the Portland area and we really haven't done much research on Salem.

So any details about the area would be amazzzzzing.

Thanks in advance and if this post doesn't need to live here feel free to relocate it where it should go. XD

I'm not familiar with Salem itself, but it's still Pacific NW, so expect moderate temperatures most of the year and rain for 9-10mo at a time.  If you've already looked into Portland, I'd expect it to be fairly similar.

If you're looking more for information on culture and such, hopefully someone who's done more than drive through can help out.  Worst case, it's only an hour from Portland and there's lots to do there.

Hey, I was born in Salem!!

If you do go there, check out the Konditorei. One taste and you won't be able to live anywhere else.

Overall, I  like Salem. It's a university town (Willamette U), has some industry/businesses in the area, and it's between sandy coast, mountains, Willamette wine country, and not  far from the deserts of central Oregon. If you like being outside, it's a neat spot. My parents  used to spend the weekends bike touring the Willamette valley, camping in the parks.

On the downside, the state capitol  building looks like a bowling trophy.

I actually don't know the different neighborhoods that well, sorry! We're usually headed to Willamette/downtown when we're there, or to our friends' house. They're in a nice neighborhood on the hill about 15 minutes driving from downtown.
