Hi Everybody!

My name is Nick, I am 27 years old and live in Bedford, UK. I am overweight, very unfit and very tired of it.

First things first, I have been around on here before but I kinda suck a getting fit so I gave up for a while. Actually to be accurate I've given up a lot, more times than I can remember. I am desperately unhappy with my current levels of fitness but every time I set out to do something about it I quit. I've tried many different approaches and accountability methods but deep down in my core I am just lazy, and I will find a way or an excuse to give up and do nothing. That is who I am.

So, time to fall on my sword and respawn, I do not want to be that guy anymore, in fact he is now to be referred to as Dark Nick and he is now my mortal enemy. (After falling on my sword and respawning back in the starter's area an evil necromancer happened across my rotting corpse and reanimated it to serve him, Dark Nick had other ideas though and stole the necromancers amulet, killed him and now rules an army of the undead that are laying siege to this once peaceful land) My quest is to become powerful enough to defeat this corrupt part of me and restore this world to it's former glory.

I will stumble, I will think it's impossible but one step at a time I will grind this out and get fit. This is my time. I have a couple of deadlines that I am aiming for so I have a time limit, I have a wedding to attend in September for some family friends I have not seen in some time, I would love to rock up in a slim fit suit and see how they react. Also I am a team leader at my place of work so I challenged my team to see who could improve their fitness the most, four of us are taking the challenge, each has put £50 into a pot so winner takes £200, the winner will be decided at our Christmas party.

I'm going to stop wasting your time now and get down to work, I'm sure I'll see you all around the board, I'll be taking up the next 6 week challenge when it starts.

For The Rebellion!

Lost count of the amount of times I've respawned, I suck at this game, it's my kryptonite but can't stop coming back for more!

Welcome back!

I totally understand the laziness. I have the same flaw. The bet with your coworkers is a great plan! 200$ is a great incentive! :D

I understand from your story that you want to lower your body fat percentage then? Cutting calories is the way to go! This handy dandy calculator can help you crunch the numbers. Remember: a 500 deficit a day will lead to about 1 pound lost a week.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome to the rebellion! Fellow UK rebel here. :) I can be pretty lazy too, but definitely try out the challenge, they are great for keeping up long term motivation until your goals become more habitual. As Cat, mentioned, if you're looking to lose weight, count your calories. I would recommend My Fitness Pal to keep track of everything. Don't use their calorie goals though, they tend to set them a little bit low. Use the calculator Cat posted and subtract 500-1000kcal a day to get your goal amount of calories to eat each day. If you are just starting out I'd recommend just going for 500 or even 250kcal under, depending on the number of dietary changes you need to make. It's better to be slow and steady rather than starting out all guns blazing but crashing after a week or two.

When you're logging your food, log everything, including drinks and any little nibbles of anything you eat. It all adds up and sometimes cutting out a snack or two can bring your calories down into a good range for you. :)

What are your fitness goals? Do you want to run, get strong, or something else? There are quite a few great articles on the site if you need ideas!

I like the idea of a cash incentive but I reckon turning up at a wedding in a suit looking good will be loads better. You'll be in photos and documented forever!

Are you and your colleagues training together? I'd love a gym or running buddy. My partner comes to the gym occasionally with me but doesn't take it seriously and I find that difficult. My best mate is doing the same as me but lives 50 miles away so training together is impossible.

Good luck!

One suggestion is to do like i have done for a while. I started from a rocky bottom few years back and only thing i counted was protein. I'd still eat the normal stuff but add more protein into every meal and work out hard. It is very surprising how much one kilogram of muscle makes difference in your calorie intake. It won't be forever but it will give you a nicer start. I too love junk food and coke. With high fat percentage you'll be bit stronger than with same muscle mass and low Fat. This is just a suggestion. What ever the way you choose to do it, you can do it

Thanks for the link, in my previous attempts at fitness I haven't gone anywhere near calorie counting, I just tried to eat less manufactured crap, those attempts didn't work though so I think I'll give this a try, just to be certain though, I take 500 off of the bottom number right? the total energy expenditure?

Thanks for the welcome, fitness goals wise I am terribly unfit so at the moment just not being out of breath after two flights of stairs, I lean more towards bodyweight exercises and that kind of thing when I think of what I'd like to be able to do, some of the stuff you see on things like Barstarzz is borderline superhero and I'd love to get to that point one day.

I'm not a very social creature so while my colleagues train together some of the time I will be training at home mostly, and I agree I'm looking forward to looking good in a suit more than the money

Correct! The top one is your basal metabolic rate. That's how many calories you need just for basic body functions. Don't cut that!
