Question for my fellow Veterans..if there are any here

Does anyone else feel like they are dropping back into "military mode" as my wife calls it, where when you are working out it is almost like an anger is building inside? Or is it just me?

I tend to become more disciplined in other areas of my life when I am working out regularly, so I can see parallels to my time in the military.  I don't necessarily get angry when I workout, though I do get intensely focused and very deliberate in channeling all of my power/strength.  I probably look angry to others though when I'm trying to deadlift 2.5 or 3 times my bodyweight.

I wish I did. I would get in some higher intensity workouts. Maybe it's a combat arms thing, I'm not a combat vet. I just chilled out on the flight deck on a lawn chair while E-3's brought me perfectly chilled daiquiries 24/7 GO NAVY lol

lol well it's not combat arms USAF I was a crew chief on the F-16. 

 

Same.  I don't think I ever did any discrete exercise during my entire enlistment, mostly because I didn't need to.  I only recall having to do the fit test once, and it was a joke.

 

Working out now is it's own new brand of "military mode" since I'm an Army civilian and I use the gym on post.

I think the reason the 6 week challenges, mini-quests, and my own goals are so effective for me are their regimented and detailed nature.  I've definitely missed the group/community aspect of military PT, and between my CrossFit gym and the challenges here, there is definitely some kind of magic working for me.  There's also something to be said for accountability.

 

I've talked about it elsewhere, but I usually refer to the 'anger' you mentioned as the fire in my belly.  I just let it ignite when it's workout time.

I never really left the military (except for a 4 month period immediately after my EAS when I couldnt find a job) I went overseas to work with the army for two years and now I'm back stateside with the Marines for the past year and a half thus far. I just changed uniforms and gained about 80Lbs since I left active duty. I do miss the accountability that the military brought with regards to working out although I hated it at the time. I enjoy my workouts more now that I am doing it for me and no one else, but it is just me doing and no one else to enjoy the pain with me anymore.

I got out back in 2011, fully embraced the civilian life for about 3.5 years found a great job doing network analysis thought life was great. Then my wife took a picture of me saying how happy she is that we are having a baby boy and I got a reality check. I used to wonder how prior military could get so out of shape....now I know. *shrugs* So I shaved my head back to regs, got rid of the beard and now I am committed to getting back to a healthy weight.

I got out back in 2011, fully embraced the civilian life for about 3.5 years found a great job doing network analysis thought life was great. Then my wife took a picture of me saying how happy she is that we are having a baby boy and I got a reality check. I used to wonder how prior military could get so out of shape....now I know. *shrugs* So I shaved my head back to regs, got rid of the beard and now I am committed to getting back to a healthy weight. 

 

I didn't fully embrace the civilian life until about 2.5 years after I got out. Quite hard to fully embrace in Afghanistan. When I got back however I made up for two years of no drinking and just stopped working out and started to eat like shit and in a year gained nearly 100 pounds and recently had a reality check both in all the clothes I have had to buy and a trip to an amusement park where I could no longer fit into a ride just 8 months prior I was perfectly fine. ive been cracking down and moving along slowly for the past 5 weeks getting back into the swing of things.

Trying to get back to that same intensity is proving difficult; I'm going to group workouts at my gym off-post in an attempt to bring back some of that feeling of shared suckiness. It helps that my CPT recently signed up there as well: makes it much harder to come to work and act like everything's normal when I know I'll have to see her and she'll ask why I wasn't there that morning.

 

I'm terrified of getting out and ballooning up. I've seen so many of my fellow soldiers do it. I'm kinda hoping that working out in a civilian gym in civvies, of my own volition and out of my own cheque book, will make it feel normal and easy to keep doing once I ETS.

The key thing is you're paying attention, you've seen others balloon up and you're scared of it.  Most of the time it happens to people that aren't paying attention to it, it just honestly doesn't even come to mind until it's too late.  You've experienced that "oh crap" moment already, so hopefully it won't sneak up on you.

I got out in 2000 and went to college then grad school, but it wasn't until after my kids arrived and taking a desk job with DoD that I really started plumping up.  I didn't see it coming on, then one summer vacation (2012) my wife caught me in this picture and I knew it was time to change:

Life just creeps up on you when you're not paying attention.  Crewing Vipers was its own workout, so I never really needed the discipline of exercise.  Now I've got it, and I'm developing self-control with my eating, too.  Took me a few years to finally "get" it, but thanks to determination and NF I'm already in better shape than when I separated from active duty.

... desk job with DoD that I really started plumping up.

 

 

This is a key factor. In my whole working life (less than 10 years) Ive only had one job which wasn't a desk job and that only lasted 4 months... I love the field I am in, but sitting behind a desk day in and day out for 8-12+ hours a day really drains the life out of you....

The key thing is you're paying attention, you've seen others balloon up and you're scared of it.  Most of the time it happens to people that aren't paying attention to it, it just honestly doesn't even come to mind until it's too late.  You've experienced that "oh crap" moment already, so hopefully it won't sneak up on you. 

 

My best advice, having been there myself, is to find something that keeps you hungry.  Always working at it.  For me it's been CrossFIt and now adventure races.  Spartan race, Tough Mudder, etc.  I wish I had found both of these back in 2009 when I was medical'd out (army doctors fail compared to civvies, apparently). 

 

I'm actually in better shape now than I ever was before or during my stint in uniform.

My best advice, having been there myself, is to find something that keeps you hungry.  Always working at it.  For me it's been CrossFIt and now adventure races.  Spartan race, Tough Mudder, etc.  I wish I had found both of these back in 2009 when I was medical'd out (army doctors fail compared to civvies, apparently). 

 

I'm actually in better shape now than I ever was before or during my stint in uniform.

 

Excellent advice.  Since I've been out I've ran a marathon and 50k, dropped to 10% body fat for a while, increased my powerlifting lifts by a ton, and have started bodyweight strength training.  Had I found those types of things back before or right after I got out in 2006 I wouldn't have had to drop 60+ lbs. of fat.

If you build the process cause you like doing it, you will do it when you don't have too.  Those people who balloon up are the same ones the gain the "freshmen 15."  You stop being active in your sport and you make your own food decisions.  

 

I'm still looking for my activity like rurik suggests...

I need a sport.  I was getting into PL, but I"m broken so that won't work.  I just can't afford crossfit or soccer or beer league softball right now.  I can't get into swimming again, because I'll never be as good as I used to be.

 

I do sometimes wish I could go on another trip to fat-camp Afghanistan again.  I lost 50lbs on my 2nd trip there with in 8 months.  This time the 50lbs is taking me over 2 years...

 

I do sometimes get angry at other people in the gym.  I had to go ape shit on a dude who didn't ask to work in and just sat his sweaty ass on my towel...  And I do get upset when people don't rerack the DBs properly...  

 

Then thing I need to learn to turn off is "there is someone always working harder than you" / "you didn't need rest when you were in XXXXX school, why do you need it now" mentality.  I"m getting too old/hurt for that shit.

It is true that someone is always working harder, that is just life. After all what would there be to strive for if we were perfect? Since my first post the anger/frustration I felt has dropped back down to normal levels. Guess I just needed to hear other vets vent or something idk. At any rate love this site.

Since my first post the anger/frustration I felt has dropped back down to normal levels. Guess I just needed to hear other vets vent or something idk. At any rate love this site. 

 

Me too, man.  Nerd Fitness is my home away from home.  I spend more time here than Facebook (and I enjoy that time far far more)!

I was never in any form of good shape in the Navy, I weaseled my way out of most PT in boot camp(I was on ship staff and would sign myself out for watch every morning and go eat 1st breakfastes in the straggler line, then meet up with everyone else for showers and 2nd breakfastes).

Then from A-school on I drank like it was my job. Eventually I showed up to a PFT still drunk in a Puerto Rico summer and got put on mando when I threw up halfway through my run and walked the rest of the way. I think it was over a 15 minute 1.5 mile run.

But man where they some good times!

Yep I was in 308 Knights I want to say I just remember it being down from the panthers, then went to Shaw for a bit 20th EMS phase, Kunsan AFB ROK 20th EMS phase, back to Luke again to the 308th lol. Back to Korea Osan this time and finally Seymour Johnson because they just wanted to screw with my head and make me learn a new jet lol. The wife and I decided it was time to go when they, (the Air Force) said we want you to go work on heavys, HEAVYS!! at Minot ND....knew then it was time to go lol.

I was at Cannon (524 Hounds) for my entire enlistment--after training of course.  I did MRT with the Top Dogs. :)

 

I got out to go to school before they could send me anywhere "fun".  We did deploy for OSW, FWIC, and Red/Green Flags a bunch, though.
