Needing some motivation and self confidence

I joined Nerd Fitness back in 2011 and instantly loved it.  As a result, I became a ninja, running 3-4 miles a day and starting down the parkour route.  I lost a total of 40 pounds and had my six pack back -- something I hadn't had since my 20's

 

Then I got injured.  I'm not sure if it was a previous injury that flared up or if I just pushed it too hard.  My right hip was severely fractured and I would need a major surgery to fix it.  I was on crutches for six months and afterward, couldn't walk more than a quarter of a mile without being in severe pain.  Two and a half years later, I can walk maybe 2 miles before the pain gets to be a problem.

 

The hardest part about this isn't the physical handicap -- I feel as though that's conquerable.  It's the mental and emotional handicap.  The self talk since then has been pretty negative and I'm not sure how to get out of this trap.  I've tried going to the gym several times over the past few years, but I can't seem to make myself go for longer than a week.

 

I'm trying this out again (both the site and the gym) and I would like some words of encouragement to keep me motivated.  Thanks, guys!

Welcome back. The battle in the mind is often harder than the battle with the body. You may need help knowing how to adapt, but you already have in you the strength to overcome this adversity. Knowing how to train around your specific condition is beyond me. Perhaps distance running is not going to be the way you get back to where you want to be this time. There is a whole world of fitness options available to you. What still interests you?

Welcome back! :) I'm sorry to hear about your accident. It can be really difficult to get back in the game when something goes wrong, and I hope you know that it's not a reason to feel bad about yourself - it just means that you haven't found what's the right thing for you yet. Staying fit in our culture isn't easy - if it were, there wouldn't be a bajillion magazines about it - but just by taking actions like joining the gym, or coming back to NerdFitness, you're building in the right direction.You can do this!

Welcome back!  Really sorry about your injury. It sounds like you've worked really hard so far in your recovery, if you haven't done so already give yourself a well deserved congrats for having the courage to move forward under really difficult circumstances.

 

Forum member wanderingcavegirl had a quote in her sig that was really meaningful to me. It read, "I already know what giving up feels like, I want to see what happens if I don't."
