Welcome to the RuckFitâ„¢ Light 2015, the Nerd Fitness rucking PvP program.

 

This PvP will run alongside the current 2 Nov - 14 Dec Six Week Challenge, starting Monday, November 2nd.

Lately there has been an enigmatic surge of interest in GoRuck challenges and rucking in general, emanating largely from the Ranger forums and spreading outward.  In an effort to harness this enthusiasm and energy before winter strikes and sidelines all of our efforts, Wolfenstein and I have come together along with the advice of some fine folks like darkfoxx and doctorake who have actually completed GoRuck events to bring a beginner-friendly GoRuck-style Nerd Fitness PvP to the rucking masses.

  • The First Rule of RuckFitâ„¢ is Always Talk About RuckFitâ„¢.
  • The Second Rule of RuckFitâ„¢ is Although This Is A PVP, We Are A Team.
  • The Third Rule of RuckFitâ„¢ is Ruck All The Things.

WHAT IS RUCKING?

The GoRuck website defines rucking as…

 

RUCK•ING [VERB]

To put weight on your back and go for a walk. More weight or more miles equals more results, more friends and more time together equals more fun.

SAFETY BRIEFING:

If you are new to rucking, please do not bite off more than you can chew.  Marching around and exercising with heavy weight on your back is an activity best worked up to.  Start out light and build your capacity up from there.  Recommended starting weights are 5# for women and 10# for men.  If you find that is too easy, upgrade to 10# for women and 20# for men.  Start small and work your way up as you build confidence and capability!

 

Without further ado, let’s get into the metaphorical meat and potatoes of RuckFit™.

 

RuckFitâ„¢ Light goals:

  • 30 miles rucked during the 6 weeks of this challenge.
  • Complete two (2) RuckFitâ„¢ WODs during the course of this challenge.
  • Complete two (2) RuckFitâ„¢ challenges over the next 6 weeks.

Here is where the PvP factor comes in.  30 miles is only the goal, which means the sky is the limit.  Ruck as much or as little as you want.  Treating this as a motivational PvP challenge will keep each one of us striving for more mileage.  Get out and enjoy that weather before some of us are under two feet of snow.

 

For the sake of this event, only urban/rural rucking mileage will be allowed.  While camping and hiking to a particular destination with a pack full of sustainment gear is an excellent activity, carrying a weighted backpack for the sole purpose of exercise is a different effort entirely.  Load up that pack with your choice of weight, some water and food if you feel the need, and call it a day.  We’re operating on the honor system here, folks.

Class: Stormborn War-Shaman (Path of Giants Barbarian/Conquest Paladin/Elemental Domain Cleric)

BRUTALITY 11 | FINESSE 10 | VIGOR 11 | INSIGHT 14 | WILL 13

Equipment:  Studded leather armor, war club, plus adventurer's pack containing rations, rope, and nature-based potions.

RuckFitâ„¢ WODs:

Whatever you make of it!  This category is entirely open to your imagination, but a guideline would be 3 Rounds For Time of 10 ruck squats, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 50 meter crab walk or AMRAP in 5 minutes of the same, for example.  Please post your workout for verification and the viewing of others!

 

RuckFitâ„¢ Challenges:

  1. Two minutes maximum Push-ups.  Two minutes maximum Sit-ups.
  2. Three mile mountain/hill terrain ruck.
  3. Three mile overnight ruck.  Must start and end during night hours.
  4. Carry 20 pounds of coupons for 2 miles of your ruck.  Any item will do.
  5. Ruck 15 miles on top of the 30 mile requirement.
  6. Don't stop rucking until you've hit 8 miles.

I assume you only mean hiking doesn't count when its correlated with camping/the weight is food/survival gear? So using a hiking trail but rucking it (ie with weights for the purpose of exercise/training) would count? Or no?

Alsoooo what about walking with a weighted pack on a treadmill?

Either way, pretty pumped to give this a shot!

OK, after 3+ hours of deliberation, I am in. I'm confident I can get in the miles. The WODs have me a bit nervous and the challenges will be... well, a challenge, but I think they're do-able assuming I can get them done before snow hits. It would've been ideal if I'd actually gotten to try a ruck before now (damn the illness), but I'm not concerned too much about that. I'm pretty comfortable with lots of walking and have a little experience packing some weight. I'm going to start with the minimum 5# weight, but will likely progress it up to 10# during the challenge.

Rookie question... do we just add 5# in weight to our bag or should the whole bag weight 5#? I'm guessing the former?

Any recommendations for iPhone tracking apps?

Hey Marauder- to answer your question, you want to worry about the weight you put in. Your bag won't weigh much at all empty, so if you start with 5# and add 5# to make a total of 10 later on, your bag would weigh a total of 10#....

I hope that made sense :). Oh, and I have an iPhone and use an app called Runtastic to track my distance and stuff [emoji38]

Thanks Wolf! That's what I figured with the weight. Runtastic is downloaded and ruck planned for tomorrow night. Coincidentally, it should be just at 3 miles AND start and end during night hours (assuming a 7:30pm start would qualify). Challenge accepted.

I would say as long as it's after dark, it counts :). Sounds liked tomorrow night will be fun, Yay Marauder!

I like to listen to audible books when I ruck, so if you have any you could try that if you wanted. Music always works good too [emoji106]ðŸ»

The husband is joining me tomorrow night, so it's probably people watching and chat.  My daughter does some volunteer work that we pick her up from every Monday evening.  It's traditionally something we walk to do.  I'm hoping to set a really good pace up to the halfway mark because my daughter is a bit of a slow walker...  

 

I have about 6 books to finish this challenge as well though, so audiobooks might be JUST the thing for my other rucks.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm in! Had my eyes on rucking for a few weeks and since I like to walk I was looking for ways to spice it up while trying a new fitness skill!

30 miles ? That's not easy but not within reach!

Concerning the wods it's bodyweight with your ruck bag on?

My introduction is Here - My Battle Log is There - 6wc I - 6wc II - 4wc III - 4wc IIII (ongoing)

Main goal : lose excess fat down to 14% (currently, i look roughly like a : 20 to 25 -according to many sites offering pictures for comparison)

current 4wc progress :

Goal 1 : walk !!! (2h27 out of a minimum 12)

I think you're really going to enjoy rucking :)

30 miles is a stretch, but just attempting it gets tour browning points. It's easier if you can plan a long ruck to cover 5+ miles to really chunk away at the total.

Yep! The WODs would be BW with the ruck. At a GoRuck event, a LOT of stuff is done with tour ruck on so the goal is to get used to having an extra load [emoji106]ðŸ»

Late evening would count so long as it is after sunset.  Personally I'm scheduling my night ruck for after midnight to imitate the feel of a GoRuck Tough.
