Wheel of Time

Recommended Posts

Loved it! So many epic on so many levels. I was gutted when Robert Jordan passed away but I thought Brandon Sanderson did a great job finishing it (though it was such a long time coming). Matt was probably my favourite character, especially when he got his mad battle strategy powers but I loved all the main characters.

If they could turn it into a 14 part movie series with unlimited budget and fantastic actors it would be amazing, but that will never happen, haha.

Overall wheel of time was a good series.  I found it started off amazing but then had a few slower/more annoying middle books and then picked back up for the last five or so books.  Some of the female to male relationships and interactions can be frustrating as well during these middle books.  Other than that, wot was great.  Truly epic in every sense of the word.  One of the best high fantasy series out there.  And they released a pilot, which was made in the 11th hour bc the movie rights were about to expire a few months back.  It was awful.  Apparently the authors wife has taken the entertainment company that currently owns the movie rights to court.  Who knows how that will turn out.

Boy is the chosen one, but no one knows what the hell that means for the most part.

I love that series, particularly the audio books. There is a guy and a girl doing the voices based on the POV, and they are both fantastic. The female characters are diverse and well developed. The male characters are important but dont overshadow the females. The magic is interesting and gender based. The monsters are creepy. There are references that imply it takes place in our world.

Lastly, this series introduced me to Brandon Sanderson, who is my favorite author (barring Tamora Pierce).

There are references that imply it takes place in our world?!? I must have missed that haha.  Do you remember any examples?  I'm curious about this.

I read the first 8 books after dislocating my hip in college.  I think the 9th book had just come out in hardcover, and I aimed to wait for the paperback.  However, the 10th book was still some ways off, and I lost interest.  I'm kind of glad I did because my memory is too poor to read one book every 2 years and have it make sense.  I see it's now finished.  I should go back and read it in its entirety.  I hadn't thought of this until I saw this thread.

I have loved WoT since my senior year of high school...about 12 years ago now.  I have never seen so many fans in one place. lol.  Did anyone else think the ending was the best ending we could have asked for?  To me it was satisfying how everything was left at the end.

I'm currently re-reading the series (listening to the audiobooks, but whatever).

I'm going to be brutally honest here: I liked it a lot more when I was in high school than I do now. Now, to be fair, I've never actually gotten as far as the stuff Sanderson wrote, and I have high hopes. Mistborn is one of my favourite fantasy series, so he's got a good pedigree in my book.

But honestly. I just find myself zoning out. I'm nearly done with Path of Daggers, and... nothing is actually happening. I mean, sure, there's the subtle, well-intentioned misogyny, something about duty, florid descriptions of dresses and Seanchan cultural fashion, and general aimless wandering with all the characters. But that's nothing new from the rest of the series. I feel like the story just refuses to advance.

Now, I knoŵ I'm coming off harsh. I really do still enjoy it, and I have every intention of finishing the series. But the shine is definitely gone since the last time I picked it up, oh, nearly 20 years ago.

Rangers, ho!

There were a few books in the series that left me feeling that way but then there were others that brought me back into it.  Sanderson's work in the last 3 was fantastic.  To me I could tell someone else was telling the story but it was so well done that I didn't mind.  I knew that the story being told wasn't his and he was just along for the ride like the rest of us.  I haven't actually read any of his other works though.  I'm planning to pick up a few soon though.
