Insert Witty Introduction Title Here

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I spent about 10 minutes skimming through Whitman poetry for suitable quotes to use as an intro so I'd appear all learned and stuff, but figured what the hey, let's just make it up as I go along.

My name's Jason, and I call Birmingham, Alabama home.  Southern native, somehow I never picked up most of the good ole boy skills of fixing cars, hunting, or football.   Instead I read a lot of scifi and fantasy, along with a boatload of comic books, played video games, and table top RPGs.   These days, I'm a work from home husband and father, who's trying to figure out this whole parenting thing.   I still read comics books (mostly Marvel, though Image has some really good stuff out you should really check out, but don't get me started.... ) but don't get to play as many games as I'd like (that whole adulting thing tends to make scheduling hard for all the friends).

I've been overweight for as far back as I can remember, and I topped out around 334 pounds a few years back.   Decided to turn the ship around at that time, and put some concentrated fire into getting fit.  It's had it's wins and losses, I'm down into the 270's now, and I gave up smoking about two years ago.    I've sort of stalled out, so I'm going back to the drawing board to put together a new plan.   I ran my first 5K just after DragonCon in 2014, and put a few others under my belt since.  I'm not fast, but I'm working on it.   Zombies, Run! is one of my go to apps, I'm currently on season 3.   My exercise routine is getting back on track and habit forming, mostly a mix of running, with the occasional spin class, and starting to work in some strength training into the mix.   Biggest area I've got to work on is the diet side of things, so I'm hoping to steal lots of recipes from the forums so it's not chicken and rice 24/7.

Aside from the obvious weight loss/fitness goals, I've got two short to medium range goal posts set up.  Some friends talked me into signing up for Tough Mudder in Atlanta in May, so I'm trying to train for it and not die.   Then I really want to do the Dark Side Challenge (10K + Half Marathon) in Walt Disney World next year.

I think that's probably enough wall of text for one post, but hopefully I'll see y'all around on the forums!  Thanks!

Getting your diet and exercise in a good routine is a great goal.  Sounds like you are finding lots of enjoyable ways to stay active, which is fantastic.

Hah, asparagus was an acquired taste for me, had some grilled with steak at a restaurant a couple years back and I've been on board ever since.  My go to vegetables are onions, broccoli, and carrots, though I'm trying to branch out more.   I've got my eye on the Thug Kitchen cookbook that has a bunch of vegan recipes in it.  Need to give tempeh a try sometime, I think.

Welcome!

Trying out new recipes is the biggest challenge for me.  I used to be pretty closed minded to trying new veggies but like you - I need more options. Looking forward to reading how your cooking journey goes.

If you start a battle log, be sure to post an update about it.  I would like to follow ya!
