    There is definitely something to be said for the benefits of deadlifts Yeah, you would think that, right? That would certainly make sense. The way it works here is, as you have noticed, somewhat different So electricity in China is, for the most part, sold on a pre-paid basis. The end user (whether a business or a home) is connected to the national grid through a meter. In order to get the meter working, you have to insert a card with an embedded IC chip, which will tell the meter how much electricity it can let through. For residential electricity purchases, the IC Cards must be taken to the bank, where they are inserted into a machine similar to an ATM that is used for charging utilities (electricity, gas, landline telephone, etc.). once the card is in the machine, you can insert your debit card into another part of the machine which is used to actually make the purchase. Then you take the card home and insert it into your own meter and which will then update and allow additional electricity to flow accordingly. However, in an attempt to discourage people from wasting electricity, they put caps on the amount of electricity you can buy at one time, so you can't just go to the bank and buy a years worth of electricity in one go. For commercial electricity, it is similar except that instead of going to the bank, you have to go to the building management office and they will have a machine there to process the IC cards. The management office doesn't have the machines like the bank uses where you can swipe a debit card to pay, so you have to either pay with cash or make a wire transfer. Because of our unique situation, making any kind of wire transfer is hugely complicated, so cash king, as they say. This should be more convenient in theory, because one assumes that the people working in the building would ordinarily be there during working hours, so you could come down at any time and top off your electricity cards. For us as a church, though, it becomes more complicated, because we are pretty much only there on Sunday, when the finance department people are very much not there. So in order to purchase electricity, I have to go there during the week and get everything done, which is not too complicated but still takes a couple of hours to do it because of the commute time. As an interesting aside, electricity is sold by electrical units called 度电 or "electrical units". One unit of electricity is actually 1kWh, but I have no idea why they don't use that, because they have a word for that (千瓦时). I guess the system is to complicated and they had to do something to simplify it... This is an alternate working theory that that is probably more likely than most conspiracy theories I have seen. I feel like it would be very educational to sit in on some of your science classes Now that you mention it, I was wondering why those things are always blocking traffic whenever the price of electricity changes. I guess they have to swap out the old batteries for the one with more expensive electricity Yesterday was a really long day. In the morning we drove out to some place outside the 6th ring to see Ghostlet's drum performance. It was the first time in the 3 years he has been doing marching band that the parents were invited to come watch. When I was in school, the primary audience for any kid of school performance was the parents, but here they are primarily for school administrators and related government officials. Yesterday was primarily for the the senior administrators of the university to which his school is affiliated and their government counterparts. After that was done, we came back and had lunch with some relatives who are in town for the week to get access to the better healthcare they have here in Beijing. In the evening we took Ghostlet for his first swimming lesson and got him all signed up for the half years worth of classes. This morning was church as usual and then now we are heading out for another dinner with the relatives before they head back out on Monday. I will come back and do my week 0 update when we get back.

    Hey, thanks for your reply (and sorry for the wall of text). Yes, you read my stats correctly (edited my first post for freedom units). I'm tall and thin. I will substitute third set of pulls for negatives (with the same grip as "main" pull for the day), and maybe limit first two sets to 5 reps for a 2-3 weeks, we'll see where this will take me. My plan is to switch pull-ups, chin-ups and body rows workout-to-workout, so single day will be more focused on single exercise (like in the article). Is is reasonable approach?

    Ok, our dogs aren't well trained on the leash, but I know how to control them when I walk with them, but they do take chances with Adam when he walks with me. And ok, we don't walk as frequently as you do, so that is also counting against our dogs learning 'the ropes' quicker. Maybe with Annie it is a bit of both, that she is trying to take a chance, or that your parents are used to older, quieter dogs, on the leash, and not a youngish pup who can still get excited about smells. Anyway... good luck with this. I totally think it will work out well. And congrats on sorting out that huge problem at work! Sometimes it just needs a fresh mind and pair of eyes.

    It’s 3:30 am, I just finished Marie Kondo’s book, and now I want to jump right in to sorting shit. Which is a bad idea. I’m also staring at my bookcase and I can see a couple books I don’t want (teach yourself Spanish books, weirdly enough) and some I’m on the fence about. Specifically Yu-Gi-Oh! manga I bought in France on my high school trip. Part of me says “yes! Keep it! It’s awesome!” and another part is like “ugh but why?” Guess I’ll have to see if it sparks joy when I touch it. But not now. Because sleep. edit: I read this post back to myself and started laughing because I’m a fucking dork who bought Japanese comics in France. There’s nothing wrong with that at all but it still seems ridiculous. Taught me a lot of new vocab though.

    I’ve read that for some PCOS people a low carb/high fat diet is a miracle cure, and for others it’s high carb/low fat. Which I find super annoying because I don’t want to try two totally different ways of eating and just *hope* one of them happens to work. (Also because delicious carbs.) So I'm interested to see what you think about this diet. Personally I’m just crossing my fingers that cleaning up my diet in general magically works and I don’t struggle with it. I haven’t put too much effort into losing weight since getting officially diagnosed (coincided with when life blew up in grad school) so I’m kind of anxious about trying and finding that it’s extra hard. D:

    Today was tonari gumi day! Tonari gumi is "neighbor group." I was invited by my next-door neighbor and informed that this is really old-fashioned Japanese culture. Indeed, everyone there was an old retired lady except me, and afterward every man I ran into nearby said "hey, that was really nice of you to help out!" Yeah bro actually it's my neighborly duty, maybe YOU should help out next time?? You live here too. I'm a little salty lol, but actually it was pretty fun. On neighbor group day, the members of the neighbor group go out at the appointed time and clean the street of encroaching plant life. I was a bit bummed by that, because I really like the aesthetic of plant life encroaching on concrete and asphalt, but the most important part was pulling out any plants that were or could potentially get big enough to shelter mosquitoes. I am 100% in favor of that. The weather was great, and the old ladies just wanted to gossip and hang out, but we got a lot done and it took less than an hour. Many of them were very interested in my zucchinis, which are right by the street in the only sunny spot I've got and thus very visible to the neighborhood. But of course I'm an English-speaking foreigner so most of them had not wanted to approach me to ask about it on their own. I haven't gotten any squash yet, and in fact none of my flowers have even bloomed, but the buds are there and growing little by little! I've been keeping an eagle eye out for powdery mildew, which ruined my crop last year. So far so good, I think. I read somewhere that it's usually about 40 days from sprout to flower, so I'm hoping to see some progress in the next week or so. If anyone has any suggestions for me, particularly those of you who grow in places with humid summers, I'm all ears! I pruned the leaves today to improve airflow and promote growth, as instructed online, so hopefully that helps. I actually found zucchini at the grocery store today. They're going for $1.50/per, so I'm seriously hoping my crop comes in.

    Saturday Update I felt pretty terrible yesterday but luckily those lunch plans got cancelled so I got the chance to relax a lot. We went grocery shopping in the morning, then I got my work done as much as I could, then we came to bed and stayed there for about four hours, napping and cuddling. When we got up, we played a little Tomb Raider and then I did an hour long workout which I could really have done without doing but rules is rules. It was a bit challenging given breathing is kinda difficult right now but I made it through without dying. I did an abs workout and a butt training workout and followed this with 20 minutes on the elliptical ending on 63 minutes working out. Food wasn't great but it was a free day. We got breakfast at the supermarket even though I barely ate any of it. We got some crisps to have as snacks for lunch while we played Tomb Raider and we had ice cream for dinner because my throat was so sore. Being an adult is kinda cool sometimes isn't it. I am going to make the effort to eat some vegetables today, crisps and ice cream are not long term meal choices. I nailed all my goals yesterday except for the calories and I wasn't that much over given the lack of good choices. I even got a teeny tiny deficit, even if it was barely in double figures.

    You haven't missed much, I only really got back last challenge myself. Life has been pretty freaking great since moving here and settling in. All of the major stressors from my old job are pretty much gone (living with my parents, dealing with my mom's alcoholism daily, my shitty job, my uncertain prospects) and I'm living it up. There are things that I miss about my home country, of course, but by and large I'm really loving living here. If we could have a movie theater nearby and a better selection of foreign cuisine, either in restaurant form or stocked at the grocery store, and if I could get my kitchen counters raised a foot, I'd be living in paradise. Unfortunately, it's only going to last five years, so I'm trying to buckle down now and start using some of my splendid free time to prepare for my future. That part is scary. Hopefully preparation will make it less so, though. How about you? How's everything going?

    Can’t seem to lose weight

    you need to refrain from excess eating or over-eating.. so your body could adjust quick to a proper eating plan/sched. what I did before was, avoiding eating too much at night.. cuz scientifically speaking, once you consume carbs, it will be stored in the body as energy (meaning to say it should be followed by a workout) cuz if not, the stored energy will become fats.. 2nd thing I did was, I drink a detox tea after a big meal. since im an athlete, I usually eat tons and tons of carbs for energy, so my nutrition coach recommended me this >> http://bit.ly/2HM9VFj it works.. hope I can help
