  1. Good for you! Despite most opinions on TKD, I encourage EVERYONE to take a martial art. Find one that is right for you and get busy! If you love this class, then devote your whole heart to it. Be the best at it! Study hard, train everyday, and NEVER give up. OSS!
  2. I'm partial to Okinawan Kempo or Jeet Kune Do (JKD). I have been in enough to know that the ground is NOT the place you want to end up, so learn enough to be able to stand back up.
  3. What are you talking about? I brought up the gun thing as a form of self defense...a tool in the tool-box. If my kids want to take Parkour, more power to them. But both of them know how to shoot. I was responding to the original post that "MOST" martial arts instructors teach people to run away. I then discussed the options for self defense before running would be considered, from my point of view. Asking me "Do you have a favorite one?" when referring to my family, is a very sick question. In fact, it's about the stupidest response I've ever heard. Do you have a favorite family member? Would you be willing to sacrifice one member of your family for another? Self defense is a complete concept, you can't discuss self-defense, without being able to discuss the full spectrum, from verbal de-escalation to lethal force. I honestly believe that this discussion has been derailed and is no longer producing any positive thought and discussion. (End Transmission)
  4. Hard for me to run away, when I have two little boys and a wife that I go everywhere with.
  5. Yeah, no firearms is reason #1 that I don't want to live outside of America. It's our God-given right. Secondly, let me clear up my statement. If I am peacefully minding my own business, and said individual decides to create a situation, most of the time I try to talk my way out. IF he insists upon making this a physical confrontation, then as I said, he gets the first move, after that I go on the attack...and I don't stop until he is incapacitated (either unconscious, held in a joint lock, or he decides he doesn't want to fight any more and HE runs away). I'm not saying I'm a bad-ass and I win every fight, I really don't. In fact, I've only had 2 physical altercations in the last 20+ years. But the myth of "Do XY and Z, then run away" that you mentioned is not in my realm of understanding. As for the situation, multiple opponents. Then that is where my Sig Sauer P226 comes into play, and my wife has her Glock 42. We watch each other's back, calmly remove ourselves from the situation, and then call the police. That is the difference in the mentality of our societies. In the UK, because they don't let you defend yourselves, you immediately jump to "run away" and this is fine, I have no problems with this, you will hopefully live a long life. But where I come from in America (the south, Arkansas and North Carolina) we don't like to back down. We have a proud tradition of standing up to bullies. It's the American way. I refuse to let someone else interfere with my right to "Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness." All that being said, sorry that I can't answer your question, because I simply cannot fathom a mentality of "running away". Perhaps it's the American in me. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm a US Marine and we just don't surrender or retreat.
  6. What martial arts instructors have you been going to? I've been doing this for over 20 years, and everyone of them I talk to and train with says the same thing..."Attack, until they stop fighting back." And if it is against odds that are not in my favor, "God created all men equal...Sig Sauer keeps it that way."
  7. "Don't give up yet...You've still got a couple of Motherfuckers to prove wrong."
  8. www.spartan.com has some great WODs that are a lot of running and bodyweight
  9. Good luck! This has to be my answer too...Muscle-ups and Free Handstands...Just hard to train these on a Navy ship...it rocks back and forth, and doesn't have rings or space to practice Muscle-ups
  10. Tired of starting over? THEN STOP GIVING UP!

  11. BAM!!!! One month after I finished the Spartan Warrior Workout! and I have not only maintained the same intensity levels for all my workouts, but I have only gained 1 pound!!!!! THIS! IS! SPARTA!
  12. Thanks y'all...I appreciate the words of encouragement. Status update: I have put on some pounds, because I fell out of the top rack (bunk beds). I ended up Hyper-extending the tendons on the top of my big toe, and the medical staff advised me to take off a week or two... I should be good to go, going to try to do rows and KB stuff tonight...and if I'm feeling good, tomorrow, I'm doing some Spartan Race stuff. Also, another goal is to run the Trifecta for Spartan Racing next year.
  13. Just found out that I can't afford to run a Spartan Race right now...feeling rather bummed. And on top of that, I have injured my toe, so I can't run or do burpees for a week.

I heard if you volunteer to help people sign in etc they give you a discount... :( What about swimming laps til your toe is better?

  14. I missed the chance to sign up for this challenge...but I want you all to know, that I'm still rooting for you! GET SOME, ASSASSINS!!!!
  15. I completed my first challenge, and based my whole character on Crossfit (I love Crossfit). I thought about the idea that being in the military, I needed to be strong...so I avoided any real "running". Even though, I know that running is a part of military life. I fell off the wagon (I'm on deployent, and you don't always have access to the greatest food and equipment). But I'M BACK!!!! I completed the Spartan Warrior Workout (from the movie 300, with a better time than the actors!) And now, I have discovered and am totally addicted to Spartan Race workouts! AROO! Am I really changing my character? NOPE. Still an assassin, still wanting to learn Parkour. But I am really focused on training for and completing my first obstacle race. My wife is behind me, and is signing our whole family up for 5k races to get the kids involved (short distance and fun themes). I can't wait to get back from deployment. BTW: Since my reboot (January 13thish), I've lost 36 lbs and brought my 5k run time to 25 ish mins. And I still sneak in a Crossfit WOD every now and then, because hey, it's fun to do the Hero workouts! Stay strong and keep your heads up!!!!
  16. I love Crossfit, but have recently really become a follower of Spartan Race...I love Assassins!

  17. a stack of books are in the rack with me. 1. The Man from Skibeereen (Louis L'Amour) 2. In the Gravest Extreme (Massad Ayoob) 3. Tequila Junction 4. Raising a Modern-Day Knight 5. The 5 Love Languages (Military Edition) 6. The King James Version of the Holy Bible 7. Tarzan and the Ant-men

I don't remember my time, but when I do any of the heroes, I try to rememeber that it's supposed to be a sacrifice... So I just do as much as I can until I absolutely can't do any more, then short break and back at that same exercise until I am done with it... Just my opinion though.
  19. Well, I used to be in the Army (5 years before I joined the Corps)...can we be friends now? And I'll accept a score of 9.5 out of 10...no one is perfect.
  20. This happened a few years ago. I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, Ca. My two buddies and I were in the base gym doing Crossfit (they tore down our CF gym and were in the process of building us a new one). Two dudes come in, one is "teaching" his friend about weight lifting. His buddy looks at us going nuts in the small cramped area that the gym gave us CF'ers and says "What's that they are doing?" "Oh, that's Crossfit...it doesn't work, you won't get strong doing that." We all three looked at each other and smiled...we knew the fun was about to begin. Old boy takes his "newbie" to the bench press, and says "Put 250 on, I'll show you how to do this, then we'll back the weights off for you". Weight put on, 3 reps and he barely gets the bar back into the rack. My buddy Jonathan walks over, throws himself onto the vacated bench, grabs the 250 pound bar and racks out 10 reps. re-racks the weight, looks at the dude and says "Yeah, Crossfit doesn't work." Every exercise they switched to, one of us would take turns going over and blasting the weight "Old boy" was using, more reps than he accomplished, and made him look like a fool in front of "Newbie". Each exercise was punctuated with "Yeah, Crossfit doesn't work." I don't have anything against traditional weightlifters, I really don't...just don't lie to the new guys.
  21. Just a quick update, since I haven't been on the forums in a while. I am on deployment, floating around in the Middle East. On ship, I switch to a Paleo (plus) life. Or as close to it as I can get with the Navy trying to fry, cover in sauces, and boil the taste out of everything. Final Status: Lost 36 pounds in two months, and have kept it off for 2 months. Completed the Spartan Warrior Workout (actors from 300 did the final test in 18:11, my time was 16:22) Ran a 5k in 24:53, and have lost so many inches, that most of my command doesn't recognize me. My next goal is to get my Crossfit Level 1 instructor certification within 6 months of me getting home from this deployment (still have a few months to go). Y'all take care. -RPage1977 www.fatmantobatman.wordpress.com
  22. GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY (Said in my Professor Farnsworth voice) I am not leavig for the month, so I will have full access to everything here at home. Better cooked meals, my full crossfit gym, and my mountain bike. I know that I have 3 weeks left, and doubt I will accomplish my goals, but I can now devote a TON of my time to them. ---Transmission Ends---
  23. Well, for starters, my course is now past the bad part, so I will have time to do what needs to be done. And for the rest of the challenge, I should be on ship. Which is awesome, because there is nothing for me to do, but read, and work out. As well, there are no free soda machines on ship...and I don't like to pay for them.
