  1. I'm reading it now after hearing and interview with him. So far it's a great read. I went to his website and the amount of links to studies is staggering. It was actually very nice to see since the introduction of the book came off as a bit of "snake oil". That feel seemed to die down once I got into the actual meat of the book.
  2. Howdy, My friends and I are attempting to start a paleo food truck in the Houston area! We've been researching recipes, seeking advice from other food trucks in the area, and trying to get this started.   3. Thanks Wolf, Yeah we're leaning toward the idea of a food truck. We're in Houston so we may visit the DFW area at some point We figure with a food truck we can hit up all the crossfits in the area when their classes are done.

  5. Wow that is a good read. Looks like the strong lifts mixed with some running would yield the results I want. It makes sense that as those muscles strengthened that the push ups and sit ups would improve naturally. I probably won't do that exact work out... but I think it shows that doing 100 push up /200 sit up programs would just be redundant.
  6. Alright gang here it goes. I find i can stick with this stuff if I have a more regimented plan. So I'm going to try to develop one with y'alls help. Right now I'm a Kinesiology major. Which I really enjoy. I'm also in the Naval Reserves and we're looking for a new guy to be in charge of PT. Sounds like that should be right up my alley. I need to improve my PT scores a bit. (Push ups, sit ups, and a 1.5 mile run) I figure I'll do the 100 pushups and 200 sit up routines that can be found on line. I just finished a training plan for a half marathon so, I can run. I just need to go faster. Which I'm assuming will mean Fartleks. To top this all off I'm wanting to start lifting some weights to just get stonger and start building a great body. I'm looking for a schedule that will help me maximize all my goals with out killing me. My initial thoughts were to do Strong lifts 3x a week so like MWF, then run on TRS. Leaving Sunday as a day of Rest. But then where do the pushups and sit ups go? Would they be better to go in the run days or the weight days? Or should I mess around use some other combonation? Looking for suggestions. OH I do play ultimate frisbee for a couple hours on Tuesday nights so I'm sure that's also helping with speed. Thanks Guys. I'm really loving the community here!
  7. I'm fairly new here myself, but I can try to take a stab at this and others can correct me as needed. The quick, over simplified version. Eat more calories than you burn and you'll gain both muscle and fat. Burn more than you eat and you'll lose both muscle and fat. You're exercise will determine what exactly the ratio of fat to muslce gained or lost. A bit more detail. If you eat a calorie excess your body will have the additional fuel that is needed to build muscle (assuming of course you're getting proper nutrition). However, you'll likely be unable to give the body exactly that extra bit, so the excess will be stored as fat. If you're working out sufficiently you'll see more muscle come on that you will fat. (This would also assume you're not just eating everything in sight while only working out 30 minutes a day.) When you eat a calorie deficit while exercising you'll tend to preserve the muscle and make it stronger, and you'll lose more fat than muscle. If you were to sit on your butt all day you'll lose muscle and fat as your body breaks them both down for energy. You won't develop huge bulky muscles during this phase but you can gain strength. Bottom line is that weight is just one way of measuring your health. Since muscle is denser than fat it is possible that you'd see your weight remain the same or even go up a little. Don’t be discouraged. As your composition changes you’ll look different, you’ll slim down, and be healthier. Even if the weight doesn’t drop right away. And like I said I'm new too, so others feel free to correct me if needed.

I just started the paleo thing too (getting close to a month, only a few cheat days), I actually counted calories for the first few days and found out I was getting no where near the calories I needed. Now I just keep boiled eggs, fruit, carrots, things like that handy. And If I feel hungry I eat something. I still periodically count the calories to make sure I'm getting enough but I've gotten better about just listening to my body and trying to give it what it needs. Actually counting the calories and seeing that I was at such a deficit was a little freeing. Since now I don't mind using extra olive oil, an extra strip of Bacon, seconds at dinner. Its great since cutting out the calorie dense foods I can eat more of the foods I really enjoy (steak, bacon, bacon, eggs). So I've continued losing weight at the rate I was before I started but I'm eating way more food that's supposed to be "Bad" for your diet. I defiantly did the carb flu thing but emerging on the other side has been nice. Now when I eat something with carbs (fruit mainly) I can feel the energy!

  12. Howdy all, Since I started doing Paleo I've been consuming a fair bit of the stuff. I'm just wondering if it fits with in the Paleo guidelines. The ingredients are as follows. Chrushed tomatoes, water, crushed tomato concentrate, jalapeno peppers, diced tomatoes in tomato juice, fresh onions, distilled vinegar, dehydrated onions, salt, garlic, natural flavoring. From my understanding the only things that are questionable would be the vinegar, salt and, natural flavorings. And it seems there are numerous schools of though on salt and vinegar. The natural flavorings I'm wondering about cause I have no idea what that means exactly... Anyone shed some light on that? Obviously, it would be better for me to make my own salsa, but A: the jar is more convenient, B: cheaper and C: I've tried making salsa before and it just doesn't turn out as good. I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not messing up too bad with it. I maybe do a Jar a week, it's my salad dressing, topping for my eggs, ketchup substitute, you name it. Thanks in advance.
  13. Youversion is an awesome App. Its on droid for sure as I have it on my phone and tablet. I'm pretty sure I had it on my BlackBerry before that. So I'd be shocked if it wasn't on IOS. Anyway another Christian Nerd checking in! I grew up in a church (where my dad works). When I joined the Military I tried a few churches and got disgusted with the amount of hypocrisy I saw around me. This lead me to shelve any religion for many many years. My girlffiend attended a small church here, I wouldn't describe her as religious, more spiritual. She taught me that its about pursuing the relationship with God. It's not about the hymns, or church functions. You read to word, you pray and you meditate not because you have to but because you WANT to, You do it to get to know the one who made you. It was a real eye opener for me. My faith is stronger than it has ever been, and I'm now part of a church filled with the most genuine people. I'm trying (and sometimes failing) to live my life by the simple sentence that was on the hidden track of the W's cd. "Love God, Love others" Its pretty much a rewrite of the Golden rule. I figure if I can do those two things, everything else will fall into place!
  14. They have those? Cooking with the grease is something I'm still playing with. Still got too much of the old, fat is the enemy, mind set in me. Though I did get asked to make some refried beans for a get together last night. Instead of lard I used Bacon grease... I've never seen people go back for beans like that. I did try a few, and they were good... But my body did not like me having beans... I only been doing paleo for like 3 weeks now and already I'm not missing the old foods, It just means more room for Bacon!! (or Taco meat as was the case last night)
  15. That looks amazing.. A primal grilled cheese sandwich! I think I may have to try to make a burger tomorrow with bacon as the bun. This opens up all sorts of new recipe ideas!
  16. So I was feeling a little creative, and somewhat inspired by reading the "Give me Bacon" Thread. And I decided to try and make a BLT that a Paleo person could be proud of. Here, is my attempt at such fun. It was actually easier to keep together than I figured it would be. (If you use a big enough spatula). Once it was all finished it held together quite well and served as an excellent base for the BLT. And yes... it was delicious... But it was Bacon, so that should go with out saying!
  17. Ha, I've been cooking it a lot more too lately, Heck I've lost weight and am eating way more bacon! Which to me is a win win! I assume the guy making the graphic was still eating toast. Or it could be the frosting he mentioned in the alt text

  20. Assassin returning from field, Status update: Goal one: Back to running a little. I can only go about two miles before the Achilles tells me to stop. I am stretching more frequently and am on my way to achieving this goal. Goal two: Progressing nicely with 200 sit ups, 100 push ups programs. Pull ups progressing as well. Slight delay as I noticed my pull up bar seems to be damaging my door frame. I'm thinking about adding some squats or something in there to work on my legs and butt (got to keep the girlfriend happy). Goal three: No soda for a few days now. I suspect I'll have to cheat coming this week as I'll be traveling and road trips and soda go together so well. I have expanded the goal (though not officially) and have gone full paleo with a few primal cheats. The first few days were rough and I was tired all the time. But I think I'm getting to the end of that. I know I won't be able to keep paleo through Thanksgiving due to all the delicious food that will be there. I did however make some Paleo mayo to make Paleo deviled eggs. Going Paleo is forcing me to get back into the kitchen which I really like. I'm finding that meals I buy at restaurants that are paleo friendly tends to be things I could easily make at home. I like experimenting so it's also been fun trying out new things. Goal four: Doing well. Though I did fall asleep last night ahead of my reading. So only missed a day. It's only been a week but I can feel the difference this makes in my attitude! This site is proving to be a wealth of information. So thanks everyone!
  21. Great goals. I like the rudiments one. It's something I often neglect. Never know when a paradiddle will come in handy I hear you on spending money too. That's something I'm always working on. You Got this!

  23. Howdy all, I got shown this site by Titanium Bulwark. It looks great and besides who couldn't stand to level up their life. With that said I'll take my stab at some goals for the challenge. Goal 1. Recover from Achilles Tinnitus and return to 20+ miles a week. Stretch before and after runs (+2 DEX +2 STA ) I'll also be taking this opportunity to transition to straight barefoot (as much as possible) I currently run in Vibram KSOs and love them. I'm just trying to go more Primal. Success will be simply if I'm back to 20+ miles/week and I'm actually stretching like I should be. Goal 2. Bodyweight exercises. Be able to do 200 situps, 100 push ups, and 20 pull ups consecutively ( +4 STR) I'll be following the plans found on the web for 100 pushups and 200 situps. I'll be putting together a similar plan for my pull ups (as there isn't one on the web yet). This is to get my core strength up so I can start doing the really fun stuff like climbing ropes and what not. On theses I'll do a final test at the end to make sure I'm in where I need to be. Goal 3. Switch from Soda to Coffee (tea gives me migraines) ( +3 CON) Fairly simple. I've already switched to diet soda and that's helped they weight. But I'm trying to test the waters of the primal/paleo diet. Cutting out the Soda will be the hardest part for me. I'll be attempting to cut up all soda. Goal 4. Read Bible every day. (I stole yours as it was a really good one) (+4 Wis) While growing in strength in a physical sense I'll be attempting to strengthen my spirit as well. I've got a daily devotional program that I'll be starting for this challenge. Other things I'll be working on too but didn't make a goal. - I'll be attempting to incorporate some parkour basics into my routine. It's something I'd like to learn how to do. - Practicing my musical insturments on a more regular basis. (Drums I play a lot. I'm specifically talking guitar and piano here, and I have a trombone that was given to me so I'm trying to learn how to play it too) - Shifting other parts of my diet to a more Paleo diet. I think that will about do it. I'm not sure if I should do daily recaps or weekly updates... I guess I'll just kind of wing it. Here goes nothing! Dan
