  1. Thanks guys! I've heard the empty stomach cardio theory too. Some say that works wonders, others that's just a waste. I may try the HIIT one of this days and see how it works. Thanks again for the feedback!
  2. Hey everyone! It's been a while since I stopped by. A question popped out in my mind the other day while looking at a bunch of people from my building going out to run in the morning. I talked to one of them on the elevator and told me that it was great for fat loss, that she just grabbed a banana and out for a run! So I was wondering, fellow Nerds , has any of you tried this? If so, have you noticed any good progress on fat loss? I'm kinda dissapointed of my latest stats: current weight is 114 pounds (i'm small - 5,2), but my body fat is still on 21/23%. I do plenty of strenght workout (no pink dumbells for me, thanks!) and I'm sure there are some beautiful muscles under the fat, I just can's see them . Any thoughts? Experiences? Thank you!
  3. Hell yeah! Congrats Heidi! Keep at it!
  4. Thanks Avalonna and DirtMama! DM: Liquid milk makes me ill, I can't drink it all all, same with cream. Nonethless, natural greek yogurth seems pretty good and filling, specially since there are days when I'm not sure if I'll be able to go out for lunch at a decent hr. Gotta take a look at primal, looks interesting...Thanks! Avalonna: I'll add more fats to my diet. I wasn't sure about olive oil, so I got some coconut oil. Good thing they have it on the food spot I go for lunch. I may carry a mini bottle for my salad in case I can't find it one day. I'll add more nuts too on breakfast. I don't eat a lot of red meat, but there is this yummy variety called Wagyu, that's grass fed and the fat is not only good but also tasty. Thank you!
  5. A couple of weeks ago, I discovered Paleo thanks to the NF blog thanks to a funny thing: When I was making breakfast, I tossed my oatmeal on a bowl, only to discover a rodiculously big amount of refined sugar. It was all over my "super healthy" cereal. And then it hit me: This is what's holding you down, stuff thats supposed to be healthy but it has to contain something that makes people crave it! So, I've been trying to adopt it ever since, getting rid of some stuff in my fridge/pantry, and make it yummy and easy to follow, cos I don't wanna quit due to unhappiness . My current master menu is the following, and I'm looking for feedback on it. Breakfast: -One cup of unsweetened ground coffee -2 boiled eggs or a handful of unsalted steamed shrimps -a handful of strawberries -Low fat greek yogurth Lunch -A piece of chicken of fish -2 or 3 small portions of raw veggies Snack/pre-workout -A small orange -A small apple -A handful of nuts Dinner -Chicken or fish -2 or 3 small portions of steamed veggies -All this sprinkled with ground almonds. If I don't use almonds, I add a teaspoon of coconut oil or a slice of avocado. I know coffee and yogurth are not Paleo, so I was wondering if this may slow me down. I want to lose the last 6 pounds (vanity pounds, mostly), I workout 5 days a week, and of course I wanna become stronger. Is there anything I may add/change for achieve my goals? Thank you so much for your ideas
  6. I'm joining the question about sweeteners here: I'm going paleo, but with a slight twist (which I'll talk about in other post). I drink tea and ground coffee (Can't stand the powder one), and I was wondering if Stevia is a good sweetener. For what I know, it comes from a leaf, and the best versions are mostly chemical free. Has anyone tried it? Do you guys recommend it? Thank you!
  7. Let's go by Ne-Yo! It's not the music i usually listen to, but it's nice for my 5 minute run before workouts. And for the days when I feel lazy or weak: Granted, Murphy didn't run much, but damn this gets me out of the couch everytime.
  8. Thanks TheRedWriter and Cara for the warm welcome! I'm pretty sure we are in different countries, but this sounds EXACTLY like my office! I don't feel bad saying no to candy and pastries, pizza and fries, but every now and then I get a very sad "You used to be cool, girl". But at the end of the day they don't push it on me anymore. I have my weakness moments, but I try to minimize the damage: If I feel like binging on pasta, I go for whole wheat fusilli mixed with veggies and shrimps (not very Paleo, but I'm still building the habit). Absolutely! All the posts I've read so far, everyone is always willing to share experiences... other fitness forums/communities have a strange "I know better than you" vibe that draws me back. I'm having a blast here so far!
  9. Hello everyone! I'm a 31 y/o woman, who loves movies, sci-fi, arts and computers. I found the NF blog a couple of days ago, looking for Paleo info and motivation. And so far, I'm loving what I've read. A bit of me: A couple of years ago, I was offered a wonderful job in a security company where I work as a researcher. My dream job, which has given me lots of chances to grow (economically, emotionally, intellectually...), where I met amazing smart people and I've made friends. Valuable since I'm a bit of a loner. The only downside of it is the 200% commitment (workaholics welcome!) you have to put on it, which made my sedentarism and junk food consumption even bigger. A common thing that happenes in my workplace: -"uhhh, terrible day. We need to shake it off" -"beers and pizza in the corner bar? -"YAYYYYYY!!" Til one January 2012 morning, I couldn't be sadder about what I saw in the mirror. My 30 y/o body was a representation of a poor lifestyle: cigarrettes, alcohol, emotional eating (the one that makes you eat not only when stressed, but also when you're happy!), Plus, some other issues (my long time bf chose a better job in other country rather than a life with me, my father's death) that took the best out of me. So I joined a gym, got rid of a bunch of unhealthy stuff inside the pantry and increased my consumption of fruits and veggies, and water. My stats: -Height: 5,2 -Weight: 130 lbs (I'll get an medical evaluation this week so I'll know more of my current status) Now, I'm in 120 lbs, and I feel good. I look healthier, feel better in my clothes, but there are small changes to make. That's why I'm trying to start Paleo, I wanna be able to build more muscle and increase my strenght, and be proud of myself. I lift and do dead weights but still light compared to some awesome women I've seen. So here I am, enjoying this community, learning from everybody and, hopefully, help and support with my knowledge and experience (not much so far, but my intentions are good ). Nice to meet you
  10. I'll give that book a whirl. Sounds worth trying! The thing about ecigs, is that the "refills" are also available on nicotine free versions. Most of them can be found in fun flavors like chocolate (my favorite), which brings me to another point: sometimes you're not addicted to nicotine, but to the actions linked to smoking (for example, burning one after a long day at work, or when you're with friends having a drink). It's always useful to figure out why you smoke, some are addicted to nicotine, some need to hold something in their hands to calm themselves, others relate it to relax/fun times or even focus on difficult times...
  11. That's right. It happened to me last month: I had a trainer from the gym come to me one day and suggested me not to to run, but to do elliptical in 6,5 (no more), cos "most women just need that and don't wear them out". Sorry sir, but I have a injured kneed and effed up lungs due to several years of smoking and I will run my daily 2 miles you like it or not.
  12. So true. Some days I go to the gym with no energy at all, but feels so gret after finishing the workout... I also think "C'mon... youre spending 100 bucks on a monthly membership, you sure you wanna waste that money by not using it? You're not on conditions for that, so GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE DESK!" (Yes, I curse a lot to myself )
  13. Being 31, smoking since 18, I gotta say that the only thing that has worked for me is the ecig. I tried gum and patches before but the gum was getting expensive and the patch never worked at all. There are several brands at different prices. Since going "ecigged" , I've been able to run and workout without the awful feeling that I'll die in the treadmill.
