  2. Nice goals! I also have a fairly ambitious sleep goal for this challenge as well! Good luck!
  3. Good luck working up the courage to go to the gym! And good for you knowing what's realistic during the next six weeks!
  4. Heh heh yeah - I know! My son and I actually got a whole earful of Latin last night because we had our new parish priest over to do a household blessing and such. He hadn't brought any holy water with him, so he "whipped up" a fresh batch once he arrived using the ancient rite in Latin, which actually includes an exorcism of the water and the salt that's added to it. So then he was walking up and down my apartment sprinkling holy water and praying in Latin. Totally awesome And then the home blessing ends with this, which I find so beautiful: Oremus. Amen. (Let us pray. Hear us holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God; and graciously send Your Holy Angel from heaven to watch over, to cherish, to protect, to abide with, and to defend all who dwell in this house. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.) The same priest had recommended Lingua Latina as a great textbook for kids to learn Latin using an immersion method - there's no grammar to memorize like in old-school textbooks, but rather the language is introduced gradually thru repetition and with lots of pictures and context (in the link you can look at some preview pages and you'll see what I mean). I've done a couple pages so far with my son, and plan to schedule a more regular time to do it with him on some weekend afternoons. Plus we know French, which makes Latin that much easier!
  5. Thanks CP! I guess with the tech shutdown I'm trying to tell myself that they'll always be another blog to explore, TV show on Netflix to watch, or PlayStation video game to play, so I just have to put my sleep first, and stop entertaining myself into exhaustion! And I find reading Nerd Fitness threads at 5 am much more profitable and useful than Facebook stuff at 10 pm at night. The filing system almost seems like a distant dream still, but I had our new parish priest over last night so I tidied up a bit and was finding all these interesting misplaced books and my son spotted a Battleship board game that we were given by my mom but hadn't used yet because it got tucked away somewhere bizarre. I feel like I had all these neat books and games that I'm not using because they're not organized (just like my papers), and getting things back in their place will ultimately save me money, because we can just enjoying using what we already own instead of buying more things! What I like about Insanity is its scaleability. The trainer on the DVD's is constantly telling you to stop if you need to. The idea is that you do as much as you need to keep your heart rate in the right place (I'd gotten myself a good Heart Rate Monitor to strap across my chest for Insanity) and you go back to the same video workouts a few times during the program, and you end up being able to do more and more reps of the exercises, which is also a neat way to follow your progress!
  6. Yeah, it's a little surreal! I can relate to the jitteriness.. once I turn everything off, I'm like "what do I do? what do I do?" There's like a feel almost of isolation or loneliness because I'm temporarily "disconnected" from all that shared media on the internet. I've been reading comic books and praying so far, which are both nice and calm. The huge upside for me is the increase in quantity and quality of sleep. Before this change, I'd wait until I was absolutely exhausted before hitting the hay, since that would increase the chances of falling asleep quickly. But with the lack of bright lights now, I fall asleep faster and inevitably go to sleep earlier, sleep longer, and still wake up earlier that I used to, feeling rested! It's great!
  7. Way to go, Bagelyo! I created a Daily Battle Log thread for myself and put all my detailed updates there, then summarize it in my challenge thread: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/forum/13-daily-battle-logs/
  8. Gack, I'm sorry to hear about the accident but glad that you're ok. Looks like your making good progress on your goals!
  9. Maybe search for some how-to videos on YouTube for the proper form? You have to sort of keep your muscles taught I suppose. Welcome back to the mainland, OF!
  10. Great first week, Wingfoot! At least the workput will get easier as your body adapts to them! Ginger *ale* sure is a great alternative to liquor!

  12. Thanks Kiwi! I got that word from It Starts With Food, which describes the Whole30 program.. I used to have so many carbs at lunch and have this terrible afternoon slump of fatigue - I sure don't miss it one bit!
  13. You know that I want to lose weight Eating well will make me feel great Devices will be put aside And we'll all enjoy the ride A much healthier life shall be our fate!
  14. That sucks about the marathon, but it sure sounds like the right decision! And good job zeroing in on the definition of the reaching out to friends!
  15. I'd say my Foreman Grill really saved me - it makes cooking meat really easy and efficient. So that was my lunch and supper, mainly. I added lots of fruit and nuts. I had sugar-free bacon and eggs in the morning. Lots of black tea and black coffee. If I'd not managed to make a meal, I'd have take-out sashimi at work (like sushi, but just the raw fish and no rice). Before Whole30, I'd eat a lot of fast food and junk food and I'd stop eating when I get that "ugh - I've had enough feeling". I found Whole30 much different because you feel so much better, so I had to have a mentality of getting regular snacks and not being afraid to eat more meat to compensate for the lack of starches that used to made me feel so full (and a bit gross) before. The first week or two on Whole30 was pretty difficult though - the body was thrown off-kilter by the radical change in diet - but it adapts well enough after a while, and then I felt way better
  16. As part of this challenge, I'm turning off electronics for one hour before hitting the hay, and that's already helped me start limiting that time.. and I plan to check out the NF forums in the morning when I wake up instead of scrolling thru social media in my bed first thing in the morning!
  17. So how's everyone doing thus far? I've managed to turn my electronics off at 8 pm three nights in a row, and the effect that's had on my bedtime and sleep has been phenomenal!
  18. LOL, you're welcome! I actually got him 5 virtual console games: Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Castlevania 2 and Super C.. all for the NES.. he's really loving them!
  19. Thanks DWD! My Sunday church service is in Latin (except for the sermon of course!) so it's a language I've really become fascinated with. It's great to see so many at NF that have language learning as a Life Goal, I might include Latin in an upcoming challenge I had someone on Twitter help me translate it.. Google Translate is still a bit rickety for Latin
  20. Ah, yes! Achievable goals are so important! The rowing sounds very interesting, although I suppose my knowledge of it outside the Olympics is pretty limited! I grew up canoeing on lakes and such.
  21. Hey shortstuff - comgrats on taking a big step out of your comfort zone with the new fashion! All the best!
  22. Congrats on the bike, Neph! I was also going to suggest studying during your commute.. looking forward to see how the challenge plays out for you!
  23. Nice goals, Primeval! What approach do you use for your meditation?
