  1. Yay! I love the simple goals. Simplicity is doable. You're going to slay this challenge!
  2. The trend is generally: Artemis likes dangerous things (and musicals, and fluffy critters). Thanks! Might need the luck as far as the biking and internships are concerned.
  3. To be honest, I started watching Arrow back when season 2 was airing. I binge watched season 1 on Netflix in about 3 days and then watched Season 2. Loved the first 2 seasons since super hero origin stories are just about my favorite thing ever. Season 2 also had the best overall plotline what with Deathstroke and all. Season 3 was meh most of the time. I thought season 4 was an improvement since Dhark is a great villain so far, but they did a few things in the last couple of episodes that I'm not very pleased with. I do watch the Flash as well, and I'm really enjoying the second season of the flash. They've done a great job keeping steady villains that are present across an entire season and this helps build the storyline. It's also much more lighthearted than Arrow and the various villainous superpowers help to change things up a bit. The Flash is good fun. I enjoy both shows, though I'm a bit more attatched to Arrow since I've been watching that show longer. Also, I love Felicity. I've also tried Legends of Tomorrow and I've got mixed feelings on that one. The villain isn't the best and some of the characters make me angry. That said, Capain Cold is great, especially when he's working with White Canary. Food is hard. Today is the last day!! Now I just need to control myself/come up with a good long term system.
  4. Thanks! The Whole 30 turns out to have been a really great decision. New Challenge: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/79173-artemis-joins-team-arrow/
  5. Fairly similar fitness goals to last time, slightly different food and life goals. Fitness: Bodyweight/weapons Challenge Goal: Complete a Darebee Workout a minimum of 3x a week (any workout, as long as it looks fun). Fitness: Biking Challenge Goal: Stationary Bike Workout 2x a week (30 min minimum) Food: Resist the cupcakes, and related unhealthy food. I'm finishing up my Whole 30 on the 1st and will be weighing in on the 2nd. After that I plan to indulge a bit. My cravings are basically gone, though I still wouldn't mind a bit of ice cream and pizza every so often. The trick is going to be balancing the occassional cheat meal with my forward progress. I'm going to try placing a heavy emphasis on food tracking and nightly accountability. I also plan to Challenge Goal: . All the Things - Life Goal! Lots of mini goals. I still don't have a summer internship, so my top priority is to apply for plenty of jobs (prefereably ones that involve plenty of real work and not exclusively getting coffee for others ). Mini-Goals: Stay on top of Schoolwork (manage my weekends!) Read at least one book for fun Apply for at least 15 intnerships (top priority). Starting Weight Before Whole 30 (2/1/16): 186 pounds Current Weight: TBA Let's do this: -Finalizing tommorow or Tuesday
  6. Challenge Summary Fitness: Bodyweight/weapons B- I averaged around 2 workouts a week, 1 lower than my goal of three a week. Fitness: Biking F I went biking.... once. Bad Artemis Food: A+ I'm nearly done with my Whole 30 and it's awesome. This was the one goal that I really feel like I have truly done amazing at. Noticeable improvements include: ability to work long hours without caffeine (haven't had caffeine in over a month now), less sleep required, better sleep quality, fewer sugar cravings, less desire to snack All the Things - Life Goal! A- Overall this went fairly well. The apartment is looking decent and the bit that is still left should be done this weekend. I even picked up a few things at the bookstore this morning to improve the place. I've also managed to keep up with schoolwork, though my last exam did not go well at all. Definitely my fault. While I haven't had much free from schoolwork, I did finish 1.5 audiobooks (The Bands of Mourning and The Hero of Rome). The Hero of Rome was a bit disappointing as the hero is occasionally moronic. Bands of Mourning was much more fun. The one goal I haven't quite accomplished is the master calendar. I've primarily adopted a different system of scheduling out upcoming due dates 2 weeks in advance in lieu of the master calendar. It seems to be working, so I'll probably stick with that. Overall, the most successful part of this challenge has been my dietary changes and I am 99% sure that I have lost weight as a result. I can't say for sure until the weigh in after the Whole 30, however I'd say 5+ pounds is a fair guess considering my clothes are definitely a bit looser and my belt is one notch tighter. I basically failed at the fitness section of this challenge and will be focusing on that during the upcoming challenge. Now that I have my diet down (planning to stick 90%ish with the Whole 30), all I need to do is really build a fitness habit (biking...) and see what happens. I'm excited to be seeing some visible changes in my body since I sort of stalled out over the holiday season. It feels good to be back on track.
  7. Thanks! There is definitely more accountability in the forums, and I believe it would be helpful for me to start posting daily. I've been a little too lazy with my workouts this challenge. Posting consistently and having a regular exercise schedule will probably be the central focus to my next challenge now that I have control of my diet.
  8. Yeah, I still need to work on better time management or something since I'm still struggling to stay afloat some days. Riding is always a nice way to end the week. I've mostly ridden western in the past and we're learning English, so things are a bit different. I've finally just about figured out posting and am fairly close to being able to do it consistently. The Whole 30 is going remarkably well. I'm 2/3rds of the way through and feeling pretty great. I think the most notable improvement has been the consistent energy levels that I experience throughout the day. Previously, I had a midafternoon slump and now that's basically gone. The cravings are also diminishing. At this point, my dietary improvements are by far the biggest success that I've achieved this challenge. Biking is going terribly.
  9. If I was currently drinking hot chocolate... nope, not thinking about it. Thanks! It's getting easier, though there are definitely some foods that are still very tempting. I do enjoy cooking however I tend to be a bit short on time and don't have all the fancy toys my parents have accumulated over the years (I really want a food processor). It is fun though and it helps make the apartment smell like home. Yeah, I slipped up with the posting the last couple days. Partly exhaustion, partly because I had to skype a friend last night and help with some problems. Sometimes you just need someone to talk too. I'll try to update tonight after I catch up on some of my work
  10. Today was a good day. Lots of sleep, followed by a horseback riding lesson (learning to post is hard...), and then a trip to the mall to see Deadpool. Tomorrow, I've got a Dr. Who tv day scheduled with my fantasy and social value class and then I'm going to hole up indoors and avoid the sub-zero weather.
  11. So, I admittedly don't know much about capoeira. I do know a tiny bit about music from my days in marching band and some personal interest. How does the clapping/singing work? Are they rhythmically in sync? If yes, are you trying to learn the singing and then insert the clapping, or learn the clapping and then insert the singing. For some people, when they have to learn songs that involve singing/humming and hand gestures, it can be easier to learn the hand gestures first. This tends to work best for me, at any rate. I don't know, that might be a total waste of time for you, but if you're having trouble with the current method, it may be worth reversing the method rather than simply continuing to go at it the same way.
  12. Right! So much awesome. I'm considering a reread in the near future. There's so much content that it's still a super satisfying read the second (or third) time around. Wasn't that duel spectacular? It sounds like everything is going really well this challenge. You deserve major props for resisting cake. It's really hard not to eat sweets when they're in your living space. Resisting at the supermarket is one thing, resisting at home...
  13. She improves over time. Grows on you a little bit. The clones are the best though. I am definitely guilty of that also. Mostly because of school. Planning seems to be the key but restraint is terribly hard if I forget to pack a meal or end up staying late and don't have access to my fridge. Diet is difficult, even without the extra work of catching gnomes for dinner. Have you figured out a plan?
  14. This school week is pretty much over (and it was hell). I did actually get some sleep. Barely. As a result of the hectic week, I have fallen behind a bit on my workouts and biking, so I'm planning on making extra space for that this weekend. The workload this weekend is also very heavy, so I'm not going to be able to laze around much. I'm planning to waste most of my relaxation time on an outing to go see Deadpool at the mall. Other than that, I've got a veritable mountain of homework and my room really needs some remedial cleaning. I really need to be better about posting and I'm going to make that a goal for this weekend and next week. Setting a timer to remind my self to post daily mini-updates. I really do feel that the NF users who do this have a stronger pattern of successes. Possibly has something to do with keeping goals front and center. The Whole 30 is going fairly well overall. The headaches have pretty much passed and my energy levels are doing well. It's getting easier to survive my school/work days of about 8 hrs straight through, and I still generally get my homework done afterwards. I'm not sure if this is 100% due to the Whole 30, or if it's also a byproduct of adjusting to the more intense schedule. Not that I care either way. I'm feeling good and managing 18 hour days without caffeine. My new Epic bars arrived and while they're ok, they are definitely not something that I'm going to want to eat all the time. I tend to be more of a beef person, though I ended up going with pork for this box of bars since that was in stock. Definitely an emergency food for me, which is probably a good thing. Those Lara bars on the other hand... those are kind of like candy. I hide them out of sight for that very reason. My food cravings have not subsided and I think they're getting worse. I'm not dreaming about chocolate but I just about started drooling over the cupcakes at work the other day. Working in the dining hall = free food and I know from experience that those cupcakes are awesome terrible for you. Must resist the temptation
  15. Wow. that sounds amazing. I might have to acquire a few new kitchen toys just to try that. Traveling with family is the best. I believe in wearing comfy shoes all of the time.
  16. ooh. How do you make that? In my infinite wisdom, I managed to order the one Epic bar type that is not Whole 30 compliant, so I'm going to have to order a different variety. And remember to check the label this time. Guess I'm saving these for after the Whole 30 is over. I did discover that the student store sells compliant Lara bars and I purchased a few to stash away in case of 'emergencies'. Thanks! Korea is definitely on my list of places to visit. Thanks for the tips! It's always good to hear from someone who's been somewhere you'd like to visit.
  17. Hi! Yay for Star Wars! It looks like things are going amazingly well for you so far. If you're injured, don't push it too hard. In my opinion, it's better to take a couple of days off instead of a couple of weeks if you make the problem worse. Anyways, have you thought of biking? I don't know if you have access to any kind of bike but it might be an option for you.
  18. So, I've never heard of this show before. Do terrible things happen to all of the gnomes? what do they do that makes them an eligible food choice? Honestly curious here, I've never seen GIF's quite like this. I like the continuity across challenges that you have going on. Shovelglove, biking, etc. It's great to see all of the progress you're accomplishing.
  19. It's essentially a 30-day elimination diet. Not the kind that involves only drinking water/smoothies for weeks ('cause that does not sound like fun). The Whole 30 is designed to force you to eat healthy, minimally processed food for a month. Most of the things that aren't allowed are from food groups that are either unhealthy, or that a large percentage of the population is at least mildly allergic/addicted to. The rules are basically: no added sugar (honey, stevia, etc)No alcoholNo grainsNo legumesNo dairyNo MSG, sulfites, carrageenan (this eliminates most processed foods)No recreating 'treats' (ex. Pancakes using Whole 30 acceptable ingredients.)With enough willpower and proper planning, it is theoretically not difficult. That said, food cravings/withdrawals can definitely be evil. For me, this is an attempt to get my healthy habits back on track (I may have eaten an entire pint of ice cream in one sitting a few weeks ago and realized I had a problem). I'll definitely be adding some of these things back in after my Whole 30, but I needed to stop pretending that I was actually eating as healthy as I could be. Dietary choices are a huge part of fitness and I was really neglecting fixing up my eating habits. I also tend to do a bit better with a more rigid system of rules and the Whole 30 gives me a very definitive list of 'yes' and 'no' answers for pretty much every situation. Stitch! There's a little bit of food temptation: I'm resisting so far... Overall, I've been feeling fairly ok aside from a minor headache the other night. It's not as bad as I expected it would be. I escaped the Asian cuisine today since one of my riding buddies had a group meeting to get to. This gives me a bit more time to figure out what I can/can't eat. The problem is that we're planning to go out to a real chinese place and try real chinese food. I really don't want to be the downer in the group, but I may not have a choice. I may just tell my group mates what I'm doing and offer to take us out to a different restauraunt and then we could do the Chinese place sometime in February after I finish my Whole 30. I'm allowing myself to eat as needed and I definitely went through food faster than I thought I would. I know I'm not getting enough protein and upping that should help quite a bit. The other big thing is going to be developing a more portable 'emergency food'. Apples are great, but they don't do much when you're craving more meat. I'm probably going to source some jerky or something. Travel = fall in love with food. I freely admit that I am addicted to cheese and pasta, especially after a few months in Italy. The West coast has great food. If you like Mexican, California has some great options. I'd love to travel to Korea someday, I've heard amazing stories from a few people. Isn't it funny how many additional ingredients end up in some of our food?
  20. Kind of. Yes, in the sense that Disney owns the Star Wars franchise; no, because she hasn't been 'crowned' a Disney princess. For this challenge, I'm sticking to the animated stuff. Maybe Star Wars next time. All the Disney!!! Hi! We're doing about a book a week just for my Fantasy class and it's a time commitment. I've always been a book worm and when I don't make time for pleasure reading I get really stressed. It's a way for me to relax and I need to be better about making 'me time' a thing. Anthro is cool, I've got a friend who's studying that and it seems interesting. Are you studying something different now? Whole 30 - it's a tough plan, but it should be worth it. Welcome to the party! It's going to be fun! and we all know that Disney makes everything more awesome Day Four of my Whole 30 is complete and it went fairly well. I've gone through my food a bit faster than I thought I would, so I'm going to need to improvise a bit tomorrow. My riding group wants to go out for Chinese tomorrow after our lesson and I'm not really sure what I'm going to do. Of all the places we could go, a Chinese restaurant is probably among the hardest to manage with my Whole 30. I'll figure something out, maybe just a bowl of steamed veggies or something. The school week is over! Victory! I can finally get some real sleep in. I'm going to try to update my original post tomorrow and maybe even do some biking.
  21. So many new terms. I think I'm going to have to watch that video and educate myself on a few things. Language learning is always fun and challenging enough to be engaging. What resources are you using for Portugese?
  22. More shattered plains! This is a great theme and can definitely be reused. Over and over and over again. In fact, I might just steal the idea someday (with permission). Anyways, I don't know where everyone is at with this series, so I promise to keep my mouth shut. Does anyone else think that the Stormlight Archives would make a killer tv series someday? I did the same thing over the holidays. Don't beat yourself up too much, life happens. We can't all have Jasnah's iron control
  23. New challenge is up! I'm in the middle of refining/editing and wanted to get something up. Hopefully I'll have time to visit everyone else's challenges soon. http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/78156-artemis-is-a-kind-of-disney-princess/
  24. The Theme is Disney, which means princesses, though I admit that I imagine myself as a bit more of a Meg/Mulan then a Cinderella. Anyways, I figured a Disney theme would open up a whole world of Gifs for me to exploit. I may have gotten a bit carried away... Fitness: Bodyweight/weapons Challenge Goal: Complete a Darebee Workout a minimum of 3x a week (any workout, as long as it looks fun). Fitness: Biking As any kind of heavy weight lifting is out of bounds (lots of bodyweight things are kind of off limits too), I need to come up with some activities to burn more calories. My cardiologist says biking is okay as long as I stop if I'm really struggling. I enjoy biking, but need to really up my workouts to compensate for the lighter bodyweight work. This challenge is only going to involve stationary biking 2x a week since I'm still trying to work out my school schedule. Once that's locked in, I'll up the number of biking workouts. Challenge Goal: Stationary Bike Workout 2x a week (30 min minimum) Food: Less of this: More of this: Food tracking went fairly well last challenge and I plan to continue tracking throughout this challenge. I did notice a reoccuring issue with my food choices and have decided to do a Whole 30 to work on controlling the impulse to eat junk food. Start Date: Feb. 1st. Today is day 3 and everything is going well so far. Challenge Goal: Complete 26 days of a Whole 30. All the Things - Life Goal! Clean the things! Unfortunately, I can't do this with my apartment. I need to finish organizing and get everything all set for the rest of the semester. Clean and neat = less stress. Read! I have a ridiculous load of reading this month and need to stay on top of things. Solution: Calendar everything out and accomplish as much as possible over the weekend. Also, read at least one book for fun (audiobooks count). Mini-Goals: Clean and organize apartment. Make it my space by putting up posters, decorating, etc. Stay on top of Schoolwork (manage my weekends!)Read at least one book for funFinish my master calendar for the semester Starting Weight 2/1/16: 186 pounds
  25. Here's the update: Fitness - C -Goal: 3 workouts a week. Result - Averaged 2 workouts a week -Goal bike/walk for 30 min 2x weekly. Result: I did this about once a week. Food - A- -Goal: Track food intake -Result: 23/26. Fairly good Caffeine - A -Goal: eliminate by the end of week 3 -Result: Accomplished! I admit to having caffeine the other night but it was because I wanted it, not because I needed it. I have successfully defeated my reliance on caffeine. Other - B- -Goal: Progress on Mandalorian Armor -Result: project temporarily sidelined/dialed down due to real life. I overestimated my ability to speed build and the amount of freetime I had. I've dialed it down to lower my stress levels. New deadline: end of summer (August ish). This gives me more time to really pour into the project and make it truly great. -Goal: Internship applications (16) -Result: Yeah, I was definitely overly ambitious on this one. I did finish my resume overhaul and have started applying to a few. Since the resume is done, things are going much more quickly, however it's still slower than I would like. Upcoming. I'm going to try to get my next challenge thread launched tonight (theme TBA) and I just kicked off a Whole 30 this morning. -Done on an iphone, sorry for any legibility issues.
