Just got back from vacation - Paris Venice and Rome...My husband and I climbed the 704 steps of the Eiffel Tower - we weren't super fast (about 15 minutes but that includes stopping for pictures ) The view from inside was amazing!! Next year we have a goal to complete the "Fight for Air Climb" benefiting American Lung Association. It's held in downtown St. Louis MO - at the Metropolitan Square Building...Participants climb 40 Floors of the building...I think we are well on our way!!
  3. Ahh Yes...I wasn't making that conncection at all...duh! That's why it's important to "talk it out"...so I definitely believe I am not getting enough and will aim to increase my intake... Once again thanks for the info
  4. 115 grams is only 4 ounces...is that for the whole day or per meal? If that is the case I am already having at least 4 grams per day - maybe I am getting enough...it just feels like I hardly eat and I don't want my body to do the whole fat storing thing.
  5. I don't think I'm getting enough protein... I made some life changes starting Feb 17th...I'm doing Paleo about 90% and working out 3-5 times per week. I have lost 11 pounds I believe just from the change in diet...now I'm at a plateau. Since I started eating the Paleo way, I don't have nearly the appetite that I used to and I wonder if I am eating enough to keep my metabolism going strong. I do eat protein at every meal but sometimes it's just not a lot. I try to not to eat if I'm not hungry, but sometimes I'll realize I've skipped lunch or it's hours and hours between meals. And it seems when I do eat I get full very quick. I am 5' 0" and currently weigh about 115 - is there a certain amount of protein I should be having each day? I did buy some protein powder and drank that after working out, but not consistently - only when I knew that it would be a while before I could eat. Any info would be great - thanks!
  6. I incorporate "cheat" into my diet and set goals to get to the cheats...for example if I make it to the gym 5x and get in 10 miles at the park I can have XXXX It's not every week but when I feel less motivated by the bigs goals, mini goals help.
  7. Thanks so much for the input, I am still a little confused with some of the language...I want to make sure I understand. My husband's typical workout week consists of a whole body workout split into 2 different days with light cardio (upper body one day lower body the next day) then one day of all cardio. Since the beginning of the year he has increased his weights by about 40%. He does 3 sets of 10 reps on each exercise. Are you suggesting to increase weight more and decrease reps? Thanks again so much!
  8. I recently startted lfiting heavier (after reading this site - thank you!) I was spending (wasting) a lot of time lifting light weights for tons of reps and not really seeing any resuts. Now that I have been lifting heavier - for about 4 weeks now I already feel better and feel stronger too which I LOVE!! This is my goal and it's working. I convinced my husband to change his workout as well - he is a big/wide guy (about 6'1") let's just say he'll never be a "small". He has already had an increase in the size of his arms (I don't mind this at all ), but he doesn't seem to want to get any bigger... Suggestions on a better workout system for him? Thanks!

I always wear shorts that go almost to the knee when I go to the gym...the idea of sitting my bare legs on places where someone else sweated creeps me out Running though I wear Nike shorts that have the compression shorts attached! Tech shirts (usually from races) are my shirts of choice for all activities
  10. Every once in a while you just need a break - no worries until you are "breaking" more than working!
  11. I think most importantly...push yourself! I've been going to the gym for years - lifting lighter weigts. I'm a small person and stuck with what was "comfortable" for me. I've been wasting a lot of time! After finding this website and doing some reading I decided to try lifting heavier weights...I really surprised myself and found that I am a lot stronger than I thought I was - I just never really tried. Knowing that I am gaining strength is very motivating to me and it is also very measurable...I suggest having a heavy lifting goal in your plan somewhere.

You are making it through the hardest part right now - remember each day it can only get easier Do an online search - I used a website for support but I can't remember the name - anyway I filled out surveys and answered questions about my personal habits - entered my quit date and stats about cigarette pricing etc...every few days I would get an email telling me how long I had been smoke free, how many cigarettes I had NOT smoked, estimated "lifetime" saved as well as $$Money saved. It was really motivating - I want to say it was a quit wizard or something - well worth the time if you have it
  13. It has taken me a while to start losing some weight too - but keep going. I find that more than losing pounds my body is changing and the weight is redistributing - or maybe even turning into muscle even though I can't see it yet. I do know I feel better than when I exercise and eat right so that is a continued motivation! Don't give up - good things come to those who wait

My first motivation is that I feel so much better when I exercise than when I don't...so when I don't feel like going I try to remember that the next day I am going to feel tired and even more unmotivated... My second motivation is that I have lost 11 lbs since Feb 17th - and people are starting to notice And Last but not least - I attend an exercise class 2x a week - there is accountability to be there and I don't have to plan the workout...I just do as I'm told that way I don't get into a rut of only doing the things that are easy for me.   15. Good luck to you!! You CAN do it and I know this because I did it after 19 years!! I quit in 2004 and it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life but it was sooooo worth it...it does take a while to get through the side effects (for me...weight gain, anger, mood swings) but you will not regret this life change!! I am probably healthier now at 43 than I have ever been in my life. Congratulations for taking this step - It's a huge one! Use your support group and just remember that even though it sucks at first it does get better. Good luck to you!
