  1. Well... what are you looking for? [emoji14] Without any idea what you like, some things I've enjoyed have been: Sophie's World | The Solitaire Mystery by Jostein Garden The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel Sebastian | Belladonna | Bridge of Dreams by Anne Bishop Palace Walk | Sugar Street | Palace of Desires by Naguib Mahfouz Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marsha Pessl Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller In the Kitchen with a Good Appetite by Melissa Clark The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield I Shall Be Near to You by Erin Lindsay McCabe Dead Famous by Carol O'Connell Cartwheel by Jennifer Dubois City of the Falling Sky | The Trinity Awakening by Joseph Evans Out of the Easy by Ruta Septys The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zivan The Broken Lands by Kate Milford Taste What You're Missing by Barb Stuckey Tehran at Twilight by Salar Abdoh The Coffee Trade by David Liss The Magicians by Lev Grossman The Sparrow by May Doria Russell Delve Magic (1, 2 and 3) by Jeff Inlo Dodger by Terry Pratchett Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji
  2. Read I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, now reading Eleanor the Queen by Norah Lofts (a novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine). Damaramu, love that you'll admit it... if I don't post on this thread, it's probably because I've gone off on a bender of reading romance and don't want to admit it! [emoji14]
  3. I don't know which one is the Nano, but my friend clips her tiny Apple product to her shirt, with the cord running under her shirt. I'm glad to see virtualmonkey recommending the flipbelt, I keep meaning to buy one! I've also considered make a thigh holster for when I go out dancing, so that might work in the gym as well (with really long headphone cords). If you do the armband, I suggest trying out threading the cord down the back of your shirt, then out the appropriate armhole.
  4. I've done the 30 day shred, I think it's fine, but gentle reminder that weight loss also really comes from food intake! I never lost anything doing JM, but I wasn't eating right, either!
  5. I echo both the "small changes" and "crockpot" suggestions - both are great! Congrats on learning to cook chicken and broccoli, that's definitely a great place to start! No real advice, otherwise, sounds like you're already making some really good, sustainable changes... way to go, Payton!
  6. Lol on the silly guy... and fully hypocritical because I'm always comparing myself to others (although I never change my weights because of it - I'm on my progression!). One of my favorite things to do is to run over to someone else's deadlift when they walk away for water or whatever, and try to lift it. Four plates on each side is a definite nope
  7. So... I forgot that my friend's bridal shower is tomorrow. I can't come, even though you all are much more fun. It sounds like a group of 6-8, then... CaptTubular heyarnold13 Jessofalltrades Slates artemisia victoria Holy Keio? Taylot? Jen? I've sent Jen a message on Facebook (cc'ing heyarnold13 and Jessofalltrades) with the info, as well. Really wish I could make it!
  8. Always a good idea! Found you! Any specific plans on what to clean?
  9. Absolutely. New faces totally welcome at all times!
  10. And that is why i love the Warriors. So many wonderful things!
  11. Ah ha ha... yes, songz... I guess? I know that he did the Simba/Nala love song one - Can You Feel the Love Tonight? - don't know what else he's done with Lion King. See, told you I know nothing of him! I'll have to make a point of looking up Aida, I love musicals music! Yeah, sig was old... I just updated it after posting on your thread! I swear I'm missing a couple challenges from the distant past, but as far back as #29 was all a search of the archives found me. :/
  12. I would have something productive to say, but I just read all 10 pages of this and my head is swimming. Woah. Moar! My friend and I are always keen on those, and the barbell has been great for them... Beautiful table! (and pretty sure that's the first time I've ever given someone that compliment...)
  13. You left just in time - it's getting pretty white out here and people are flipping their shit. #whatisthiswhitestuff #snowemergency
  14. Ha ha, maybe... I don't really know anything about Elton John beyond the Lion King song (which kicks all kinds of ass), so I'd have to do some research before I could weigh in on that hypothesis... And yes, yes I am.
  15. Ha ha, I certainly won't ask you to! Keeps things much more entertaining. Also the pain killer info is definitely interesting, thanks for the education...
  16. I came for the food, and got Elton John instead But... love the progress! Way to be so totally awesome on your goals for week one! All the exercise in, within a hair's breadth of the calorie goal, and half of your tight dress list done? #winning!
  17. Brunch roll-call for 3/15 @ 1:30pm: 1. meeeeeee 2. artemisia victoria 3. CaptTubular 4. heyarnold13 JessofallTrades? (+1?) Slates? WizardTrip? bebopalula? Taylot? we'll miss you at brunch, jsimmons2... let your wife know she's welcome to come without you! Hiking: Since we have out-of-city folks that haven't yet made it to a brunch, can one of you throw out two dates that work for you, and a location? Just pick two dates that work for you, probably in April, and we'll see if we can get people to commit to one of them. Looking especially at Nubbins and alienjenn, although if another person does it first, that's fine!
  18. 1. The first part of that (updating the forums)? Ultimately isn't as important as the second part of that! You can always "let us down" by not posting, not updating, whatever, as long as you keep fighting through the challenge. You absolutely can do it! And if you get to the end of the six weeks and haven't completed one of your goals? Break down into a smaller, easier-to-achieve goal - even if it feels pathetically easy, which has been the hardest thing for me to do - and then win at that! Plus, a reward system can be totally awesome - never underestimate the power of a real star chart, complete with stickers! 2. YESSSSSSS welcome to the iron! <bias> It's the best part of the NF community, really. </bias> 3. #winning Way to go on that! Doesn't it feel good to get that bar on there?! Way to step past your fear and prove a point to yourself. Can't wait to see you post about your first plates on the bar! 4. Smart choice - with my last challenge, I didn't really see a weight change, but I definitely saw measurement changes, so that felt good. Hmmm.... so what are no cook options for paleo breakfasts? If you're in a no-cook mode, are you still willing to heat up something that's already been cooked? No-cook ideas: hard-boiled eggs, pre-cooked meat that's fine cold (lunch-style, rotesserie chicken, cooked steak strips, cooked bacon), veggies, smoked salmon, almond butter on a banana, fruit in general, canned tuna (can mix with avocado, salsa, whatever), salad, smoothies, raw or pre-cooked veggies, paleo granola Make ahead and warm-up ideas: leftovers , frozen advance-prepared individual-sized dishes such as paleo shepard's pie, egg muffins, any style veggies, breakfast sausage
  19. You are only planning for 7 hours of sleep a night, and have expressed a desire to try to cut it back to 6.5 (by getting up at 5)... can you give a little on either side of that equation? I know that if I want to get up at 5/5:15 (which I do for morning workouts, ugh), I really have to be in bed by 9. Especially as you add in weighlifting, your body may even need more than that. So maybe consider trying for 8 hours of sleep? That may help with waking on time. Also, what are you waking to? Pitch black at that hour? I have a light that I can turn on while in bed, and doing so immediately upon waking makes me 100x more likely to stay awake! Ha ha... funny how that works! Everyone says that exercise and nutrition make you feel good, but I'd still rather choose to believe that couch + cookies will make me feel just as good. Still so disappointed that this is not true!
  20. That's a lot of shoveling! I live in an apartment now, and one of my bittersweet realizations is that I don't have to shovel snow this winter... was half tempted to go buy a shovel and just start shoveling for others! And woot for Stronglifts - I am eternally doing Stronglifts 5x5 myself.
  21. Wait what? Hi! I'm here now! Ha ha, I've done this before... but then I just get sad that I'm talking to myself. REALLY glad the cat came home, good to see the workouts happening in general, lolz at Darwin's spoiler taco, and nope, coffee never worked like that for me either. Have a cuppa before bed? Why not!
  22. Four didn't happen this weekend, but I'm expecting a snow day for tomorrow in which it can totally happen, and I'm also planning to take Friday off work. Freemont - thanks for the idea! My cup actually runneth over with all sorts of opportunities however, so that's not the problem, and I've even set up resumes and a cover letter for positions... and then shied from sending them in! So, no, it really needs to be down to the submission. That, and my work environment is all kinds of awful, so really need to get out fast. I know exactly which two jobs I'm submitting for tomorrow, at least! I've been at this job for 6.5 years, since leaving college, so a large part of it is getting past the fear of the unknown. Need to figure out how to translate beast mode from the barbell to the job search! Speaking of the barbell, I almost fell over today with it. Oops.
  23. Here's to hoping for good news! (And if it's not, here's to hoping to hear all about how you listened to your body and gave yourself more time to heal )
  24. YEAH GOALS! I think your goals are great! Allows for flexibility while starting to enforce habits that you want to develop. I love that you have plans for exercise both in and out of the home - because surely at least push-ups can happen each day, if nothing else! Build the habit now, worry about a training plan later when you're already hype to exercise. Also, good call on recognizing your limits with what you will or will not do at this time for eating - good plan for moving forward at a maintainable pace! For positive self-talk - which is so very important - might make sure you have a couple ready-to-go-to phrases for when you need them... one of my favorite during lifting is when I step up to the barbell and start whining internally about how I can't do this, I yell really loud (again, internally ), "No,stop! You are a bad-ass, you've totally got this", make a fierce face in the mirror and proceed! Love the goals, and.... congrats on getting married! I hear it's nice. Oh, and that yoga pose? Is totally awesome. You're such a bad-ass, I love it.
  25. turboseize - LOVE the pictures! Especially the whiskey, but I'm craving that... The fourth one would look beautiful on my wall
