  1. One major advantage to deployment is that I have a go to group of like minded individuals who like adventure and fitness. This weekend's activities included a ghost hunt at Pensacola Lighthouse. I did not find any ghosts but I did find a killer leg workout by climbing the 170 step lighthouse twice. Today I learned to sail and dove into the ocean to practice my survival swim. Who needs a gym?
  2. Sticking to body weight exercises was the right call. I'm working odd hours and the base gym is closed when I'm done. If I focused on bench press this would be a bad day. Instead I find a pull-up bar and a place to run and I'm set. Vegetables are easy. The chow hall serves them with every meal. I should have sent my play out to producers before I left. I don't have a laptop and computers are sparse where my training is located.
  3. The veggies are just finishing up whatever bags are in the freezer. Nothing fancy. I always keep a stockpile of steam in bag veggies so that there shouldn't be any excuse not to eat some, but somehow there is always an excuse. I could always use another look at my play. Thanks! Working out has been lame this week; sneaking in sets of pull-ups to at least maintain. I've been really busy getting all the last minute stuff done before my flight on Sunday. Lots of farewell parties and taking time for the kid and wife. Bike rides, dog walks, lawn work, and even building a full sized coffin for our Halloween decorations because my son wants to have the scariest house on the block.
  4. I feel like I'm kinda nailing this so far. Yesterday's workout was: 3 sets of 3 vertical jumps 3 sets of 30 seconds of handstand holds (wall assisted) +5 pull-ups 2 sets of 30 seconds of lunges iso holds followed by 50 ft bear crawls Then 30 minutes of jogging For the pull-ups I knocked out 3 then had to switch to chin-ups on the firs set. The second set was broken up to 3 and 2. Then the third was one followed by 4 jumping pull-ups. My wife decided that I could not have anymore of the veggie loaded fried rice, but that's alright. My leftover pumpkin and vegetable curry was muy awesome. I have not submitted my play to any producers this week. Instead I opted for one last polish. At first I thought this was paralysis by analysis, but as I have found too many typos and clunky lines in the first act, taking it slow was the right call.
  5. Raptron, it is worth a road trip to get you some. Pumpkiny, vanilly goodness.
  6. Yesterday's workout was 5 sets of 1 minute on 1 minute off of: Pushup high position iso holds Pushups Squats Followed by my last meeting as the Bear Cub Scout den leader where we engaged in an epic ultimate Frisbee battle. On the veggie front, my wife scored a major assist with cooking up a gargantuan veggie loaded stir fry. Lots of peas, broccoli, and some red peppers and carrots from our garden. I then ruined some of the good work by hitting the bar with my buddies for a going way party where I drank an Old Rasputin and a Fermentation without Representation. I'm not going to lie. That was some tasty beer.
  7. I'm not going to lie. It was pretty awesome. I made a huge batch so it's going to last me through the weekend. Veggies managed.
  8. Today: I cooked semi-homemade pumpkin curry stew loaded with peas, green beans, and carrots. 6 sets of 2 pull-ups with 45 second breaks between sets Revised 11 pages of my play. The workout was light today because it was an active recovery day.
  9. Thanks everybody for the comments. My play is a comedy set in basic training. A group of recruits compete to earn a pass from the drill sergeants to attend a summer carnival, eat turkey legs, and maybe even listen to REO Speedwagon Live! Vegetables: Peas and carrots. Nothing sexy, but got the job done.
  10. I love the nature quests. I am a cub scout leader and it's a lot harder to get rough and tumble boys into the woods than you would think. Once they get out there they love it.
  11. Vegetable fail: I ate a bunch of avocados, thinking they were vegetables. Google set me straight. Workout today: 50 burpees (broken up into 5 sets of ten) followed by a 3 mile run, clocking in at 29:16. I am not going to lie I felt like weak sauce after the burpees.
  12. @TMedina The nice thing about being in as along as I have is that I get all brand new stuff.
  13. Hey nerds! I'm excited to spend the next 6 weeks getting awesome. I am undecided on class. Smart aleck ranger, maybe? MAIN QUEST: Meet the physical requirements for my upcoming deployment. QUESTS: Eat a vegetable everyday (aiming small there, but baby steps to awesome) Complete 5 days of Spartan Sprint training every week 5 pullups in a row LIFE QUEST: Submit a play I wrote to 6 different producers MOTIVATION: I am preparing to deploy with the military. My wife and son will feel better about me going if I am in shape and ready to handle anything that comes my way. Good luck to everyone!
  14. Ahh...things got derailed this week. I've had a vicious cold. So I've walked the dog and the kid and the wife instead of running. Light pushups to maintain my progress. The garden is almost on auto pilot. I need to take a picture of it whenever it stops raining. I'm about ten pages away from getting it done. I hope you are all getting close to your goals. It's the home stretch.
  15. Don't let last week get you down!
  16. So my wife poked my side and described it as jiggly. That's why I'm trying to get back into shape. I don't want to jiggle.
  17. It kind of depends. If you live near outdoorsy type areas you can find good used gear on Craigslist. If you stick to summer camping, which you should if you're new to the whole ordeal then a cheap sleeping bag from Walmart and a small waterproof tent will get you started. Beyond that you just need a cooler for food, a flashlight and bug spray and you can handle an overnight at a campground.
  18. How are the aikido classes coming along?
  19. Well, I was right. Full contact fatherhood is exhausting business. I just returned from taking my kid on a cub scout camping trip with a bunch of other unruly hellions almost as rambuctious. We smacked the hell out of that camping trip. A one mile night hike to find owls. A three mile day hike. Hunting for branches and logs to make a wilderness survival shelter. We even worked on the Kickball merit badge. I kid you not there is a kickball merit badge. Judging by how much my kid and I have slept much fitness was accomplished.
  20. I'm participating in this week's minichallenge. My 15 minutes a day will be spent performing full contact fatherhood. I will work out with my six year old son. Chasing that perpetual motion machine around the neighborhood might just break me.
  21. Alright. I'm going with an activity that I totally love. Full Contact Fatherhood. I'm going to work out with my six year old boy at least 15 minutes a day. Keeping up with that perpetual motion machine will get me a workout.
  22. Thank you. I'm hoping that late frost we had last night didn't kill what I've planted. We'll see. In other news. Still cranking out the pushups. My neighbors are beginning to know me as that weird guy who runs around the block at night.
  23. There are now some pumpkin seeds in a portion of that box. I've got red peppers growing in the small container behind the large box. My dog keeps peeing on it so that should give the pumpkins a more robust flavor. Running is up to 2 minutes on one minute off.
