  1. Hi Nerds! I first found this site and created an account around 2013. It's been a while! After coming back from a year long overseas trip in 2011-13, I was in shape for the first time in my life. I was down to about 180 lbs, did CrossFit regularly, and generally enjoyed life. I saw NF as a way to keep myself motivated. Fast forward to 2017 and things aren't going that great. I've put on a lot of weight - more than I have ever been. Now at 260ish; my previous high weight was 213 back in 2010. Suffice to say I have a LOT of work in front of me. I was pretty skinny as a function of being overseas (new beginnings) where I walked everywhere, was only around fresh food (best veggies I've ever had), and cooked often. Coming back stateside I was doing well (CrossFit) - kept up with everything healthy. Then some personal stuff happened (depression, etc.). I lost my way and gained my weight. About 5 months ago I started getting back to the gym with a personal trainer. I'm now at 30 mins, 3 days a week - at least when I don't flake out and skip it or get there super late. Typically we do a mix of weights and cardio. The biggest problem is my diet. I've done it before, but this time it's just way harder. I was Paleo-ish for a while, Keto-ish, MyFitnessPal counting calories, etc. My mom is recommending 17 Day Diet because it worked for a family friend a few years younger than me. My family is supportive and encouraging. I like to cook and generally bring healthy food with me to work; I just have a complete lack of self discipline. My office has tons of candy, desserts, and other sweets. I stop at Starbucks, Dunkin, local bakeries, get desserts on my own, pig out on whatever is in our house, etc. I'm turning 30 in May, and I want to fix this. I need to fix this. Knowing that still hasn't gotten me out of my bad habits. Last year I went to New York Comic Con and it motivated me to want to be in shape enough to this year. Today I re-found this post and it convinced me to come back and post. No one wants to see a fat Han Solo. So that's my goal, to cosplay as some great character. My backup is to go as Barf or a Sontaran.
  2. Thanks for the advice Nathan. I'll try to figure mine out this weekend. My girlfriend, a fellow NerdFitness Rebel and Crossfitter, will help me figure it out. On a related note, today we did our first 5k ever!! It was the Run Or Dye race, which I highly recommend if anyone is looking for a Couch 2 5k goal. I hadn't actually read everyone's posts in detail earlier... loving the philosophical musings on Yoda! Here's another one for everyone: “If you end your training now — if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did — you will become an agent of evil.â€
  3. Hey fellow Padawans! If Lady Churl is the 8th wheel, I guess I'm just the spare tire? Here's my current challenge: workout 3+ times per week, burpees, one meal paleo per day. It's really cool to see that we have such a diverse group here! Random question: does anyone get how to choose attributes if you really feel you're too out of shape to pick? Or is it what you want to be?
  4. Lady Churl, fellow Yoda Padawan! The burpees aren't too bad so far - 5 was definitely the right number to start with. My biggest challenge with that goal is ensuring that I keep the correct form. Once I get beyond this week I think it'll start getting a lot harder a lot faster! I've been keeping track of my goals in this google doc. Not sure that's the proper NF way of doing things, but I figure it's very nerdy so that's OK. (It even auto-calculates my grades for the week).
  5. Hey redtomato! Thanks for the suggestions! I've updated my post above using some of your advice.
  6. I started crossfit a few weeks ago (I finally found a workout I enjoy/suffer through), and I'm attempting to eat healthier, but that's really hard. I looked down at the scale today and wasn't happy. It's time to get into higher gear with all of this. Goal #1: Do something active 3+ times per week High intensity workouts: crossfit, running, etc. Anything that gets up a great sweat. Low intensity workouts: long walks, etc. Anything that gets me moving and out of the house. A: 3 high intensity workouts in a week B: 2 high intensity workouts + 1 low intensity workout in a week C: 1 high intensity workout + 1 low intensity workout in a week D: 1 high intensity workout F: Zero high intensity workouts Goal #2: Be able to do 20 perfect burpees in a row without stopping Still need to figure out how to make this happen, beyond just start small and work up! Any ideas? What should be my weekly goals? Week 1: 5 burpees in perfect form, all in a row A: 5 burpees, every day B: 5 burpees, 6 days C: 5 burpees, 4-5 days D: 5 burpees, 2-3 days F: no burpees - 1 day Week 2: 8 burpees Week 3: 12 burpees Week 4: 15 burpees Week 5: 18 burpees Week 6: 20 burpees Goal #3: Eat more veggies than carbs in a day Not sure how to make this a measurable goal. I really want to make it lose 30 lbs. But I know that's not reasonable. Some help here is appreciated! Goal #3: Eat Paleo one meal per day A: Eat a paleo meal, 6-7 days B: Eat a paleo meal, 4-5 days C: Eat a paleo meal, 2-3 days D: Eat a paleo meal, 1 day F: No paleo this week. Sorta Goal #4: figure out how the heck to assign attributes to these goals.
  7. cavejen and bigm141414, I can't thank you enough for your encouraging replies. I think that I found a Crossfit gym with some good trainers and from what I've heard: a nice community. My first non-onboarding classes will be next week! I was thinking about using Fitocracy to keep track of my stuff - do you think I should use a notebook as well? Eventually I'll get myself to do the couch to 5k thing again. Just gotta get started with one thing!
  8. I would be totally up for a hike! I'm gone this weekend, but sometime soon for sure!
  9. Hi everyone, I'm new to the rebellion. I've been reading the NerdFitness blog for over a year and decided it was about time I got off my fat lazy -- and did something. So, with some loving prodding from my girlfriend, I signed up for Crossfit! I'm doing the intro classes this week, learning about the different movements - like how to do a squat with a bar without killing yourself. I have class #2 tonight and I'd like to know: What I should do to make the most of Crossfit? A bit of background: I've always been out of shape and never enjoyed exercise, working out, sports or generally being active. I need to figure out a way to keep enjoying working out, or at the very least keep myself going back. I know that eating right is a part of it - and I'll get there. I just want to make one major change in my life at a time. What tips do you guys have? Thanks!! Alex
