  1. I've looked through the forums and couldn't find any comparisons between the fitness guide and strength guide. I'm on the fence between the strength guide and the fitness guide. On one hand I want to become as strong as I can (strength guide). On the other hand, I have little real knowledge of fitness in general. I've never taken any time to dig deep into nutrition etc. I know the strength guide has dietary information like the fitness guide, but was wondering how in depth it goes. I want to build strength and shed the excess body fat. I don't have the money for both guides and was wondering if anyone who has both could offer any advice about which to get. Even if you only have one or the other any insight to the content would be great i.e. quality or quantity of dietary info in strength guide and strength training info in fitness guide. If I get one first and the other after I get the funds together, which would benefit the beginner the most? Any input would be awesome.
  2. I couldn't agree more. I was a bubble head for 6 years. The absolute hardest part was consolidating what I thought I was getting myself into and what I was actually living. Going to sea on a submarine was the single most rewarding and difficult thing I have ever done. In my experience, those who served in their country's uniformed services have almost always said that it made them better people and wouldn't change a thing. I am one of those who signed up for six years directly out of high school and got out. I enjoyed aspects of my time in, but knew I was not a lifer. I wouldn't change a single day of my career (except maybe being run over by that oil tanker). Good luck in your new career choice and good luck to all those who are already in.
  3. I can't help you with food for the field. I spend ~70% of the year on hotels with a similar setup. I found a contraption at a wal-mart that makes omelettes in the microwave. I also purchased a microwave bacon cooking plate (I'm still not convinced its better than using a normal plate) and a microwave vegetable steamer. Grand total was about $15. Now I go to the grocery store and make omelettes, bacon, scrambled and poached eggs in the microwave. When I lived in the barracks (Navy, open bay) I used to use my iron to make grilled cheese sandwiches (cotton setting, no steam). I haven't had to do that for a long time, but I bet you could come up with some pretty good ways to put your iron to use. One word of caution: clean the iron before using it on dress whites.
  4. Thanks for the comments. I've been away from NF for a few days (118 hour work week). I have however been keeping up with the dietary changes and squeezing in the 20min hotel room workout every other day. I've figured out that the hotel microwave can be used to do more than reheat domino's. I found a microwave omelette maker and can't believe how awesome the result is. I've saved money ~$1.00 for eggs and veggies everyday instead of $15 everyday for pizza. Sure they bring me the pizza and I don't have to even talk to a person to get it, but making my own hotel food tastes better, keeps me feeling full longer and is a lot cheaper. I've even been asked by my wife where to find info on paleo. I directed her to NF and she's taking steps to modify everyone's diet. We're lucky to have 2 healthy boys, we're going to do everything we can to keep it that way.
  5. For a temporary reduction to pass rope and choke we used plastic wrap and preparation H on the guys who were borderline. This obviously doesn't increase fitness level, but may allow you to sneak in on rope and choke. I was LPO and had 3 guys who were WAY too big to make weight, but this helped. I hope this isn't your 3rd and final chance. Food for freedom sounds tempting at times, but it isn't worth the health risks.
  6. I'm a 27 year old who travels a LOT for work. I average about 70% of the year on the road. Over the last 2 years I gained close to 50 pounds. Mostly due to poor diet. I stumbled across NF by way of google search of "how to eat healthy while traveling". I've been reading NF for a few weeks and signed up a couple of days ago. I've been impressed with the community's sense of support and extensive knowledge. I'm transitioning to full paleo over the next few months. I will be there by November. I need to get back into the kind of shape I was in while in the Navy. I have two young boys, who I would like to see grow up to be successful and healthy. So I must lead by example, I can't expect them to be healthy while I'm eating junk and sitting around all day. I have been tracking my intake for the last two weeks and am definitely going to have to make some substantial changes. The good news is: I am armed for success (thanks to NF). I'm taking it a few small changes every week and will be eating healthy and leveling up my fitness in no time. I'm excited to become a part of the rebellion. -Warren
