  1. I understand that, the reason for the expense though is that we'd be buying something specially for me and something specially for them, when it would be cheaper just to buy more of one item. I actually cook the majority of the meals in my house, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get them to eat mostly paleo stuffs, but they'd expect rice with curry, mashed potatoes with pork chops etc. It wouldn't break the bank, but we may have to up the food budget a bit, and I'm not the main bread winner in the household so I can't make that part happen, I just have to put in a polite request. I've talked a bit about it with my dad, though I don't think my brother knew. He was surprised enough that I went on a five minute bike ride the other day. What I want to do is go shopping with my dad and hopefully his partner as well (since she's moving in, we'll have a bit more money for food anyway, so I should be able to bring the budget up a little. Also, she knows her way around a shopping trolley more than my dad does lol). Preferably this Saturday, and just take a good look at the kind of stuffs I can get, the kind of things we can compromise on, and the prices of certain things. The annoying thing is at the moment there's not really anything paleo in the house, and I can't starve myself, but I really want to get started with this.
  2. So, last night I come home from work and my brother's cooking burger, franks, and chips (fries to you Americans, don't want you thinking I have crisps for dinner lol). Can't really say no after he put in the effort. It's annoying. Though, to be entirely fair, since I decided this, we haven't gone shopping so there isn't a whole lot of paleo type stuffs in the house. But I'm wondering about the future. If I do go in with all this, how often will I come home and find someone cooked something that isn't right for the diet? It's going to be awkward to have to have two separate meals most days. And it could end up being expensive. There is a possibility I could get my brother to try some of the food, but my dad won't have it.
  3. Okay, so I'm quite a chocoholic, but I don't tend to eat loads because the chocolate I like is the high quality stuff and therefore more expensive. I got given a box today at work as a prize for selling almost two hundred pound insurance, but I haven't touched them. I'm surprised at this. Before, I would have a box by my bed while watching a movie or reading a book, and I'd keep taking them, telling myself, 'Just one more.' but I could never resist. So I'm quite proud of this. However, I understand the cheaper chocs aren't paleo because they've got shed loads of sugar in them, but what about the higher quality ones that concentrate on cocoa content? I know they've still got a bit of sugar in them, but what about the cocoa, is that paleo? Hotel Chocolat used to sell, or maybe still do, a bar of 100% cocoa chocolate which didn't really taste very nice, but was good in cooking.
  4. I said I wasn't too fussed about the diet, but I'm still gonna try. Had my first intentionally paleo meal today. Grilled pork steak covered in chinese spices (don't like bland food, and I specifically picked out the jar that didn't have any flour in to bulk it out), peas, and mashed carrot and cauliflower seasoned with salt, pepper, mustard and garlic. Wanted some gravy with it, but left it out 'cause of the flour in it, so I had some mustard instead. However, I'm not sure if everything there was paleo, particularly the mustard and spices.
  5. Thought I'd put this here as it is a milestone for me. Instead of talking about getting fit, I actually did something. So WOOT! However, I didn't feel too good afterwards. Did a bit a of warm up, about a quarter of that suggested in the warm up article, followed by about a quarter of the hotel workout, then did a five minute bike ride. I came back and felt like I was going to be sick. Felt light headed and out of breath, so I took a puff of my inhaler, and suddenly had to lie down for fear of passing out while on my feet. I had this last time I tried and was told it was just because my body's not used to it and that I shouldn't push it so hard. But the thing is, I don't know what my body can take at the moment, so I'm just going through trial and error. Tomorrow, I'll probably walk the long way round to get to the train station, then on Wednesday, do a little more cycling. I'll go at this for the next couple weeks, before I step up and see if I can push a little harder. As far as diet goes, I didn't eat before the workout, then afterwards I had a banana for breakfast. Not sure about lunch as we don't have a great deal of paleo type stuffs in the house, but when we go shopping next, I'll make sure to stock up on some. I'm not too fussed about diet right this minute, I just want to get more active and get my body used to it. Eventually, I'd like to go almost full paleo, with a treat here and there, but few and far between. My goal at the moment is to be able to fit into my trousers properly. I don't want to buy bigger as it could just be a waist of money ( ). So here's hoping I can keep this up, but not kill myself in the process.
  6. Hi. My name's John, I'm late twenties, live in England, and am an independent author. I haven't always been the most active person out there, but I've decided I want to give it a go. I tried a couple of years ago, and gave up because of laziness (I'm not afraid to admit it), but I've managed to make more productive changes in my life, not least finally completing my book and publishing it after twelve years of writing. I now manage to write a significant amount every day, so I'm thinking I could put this kind of effort into getting fit. When I originally did this, one of my primary goals was to get some lady action, but now I'm just tired of being unfit. I'm out of breath after just walking to the shops, I struggle to put my shoes on, I eat loads of crap. My biggest weaknesses would have to be motivation, embarrassment, and food. As I said before, I've pretty much taken care of the motivational issue in other aspects of my life, I just need to transfer that energy to physical things. I like food. I used to be a chef and have a passion for making and eating nice things. I'm not averse to eating healthily, I like fruit and veg, and could as happy with a bowl of salad as I am with a KFC. However, my biggest hurdle, I believe, is people noticing my change in lifestyle. I've always been a little self conscious about these things, and I've kept saying that whenever I move out of my dad's house I'll do it because then no one will notice my change in diet and activity (indeed, when I tried last time, I had moved out and was on my own, but due to financial reasons, I had to move back). So, here's hoping I can break some bad habits.
