  1. Now that week 1 is officially int he books and week 2 is underway I thought it would be a good time to send out a status update. I worked out 6 days during week 1 in some capacity, so I felt good about the effort and hopefully it will pay off in 6 weeks. Workouts: My goal is 4 times per week to weight train to accomplish 4 pullups. I stumbled upon the Navy SEAL workout and began using it. This does not call for me to do 4 bodyweight workouts per week initally (only 3 times per week) but does ramp up to 4 workouts per week in week 5 and includes pullups. Last week I did the 3 prescribed workouts...so I am on track. Cardio: The SEAL workout calls for running three times per week for the first few weeks, and again ramps up in week 4 with a 4 mile run in week 4. I did the run, though my time was a little slow. I also went swimming in week 1 and focused on form and drills for the freestyle, however to get some good cardio in, I did a lot of side stroke work that involved laps. The 250 yard swim is going to be the hardest of my goals, it will involve muscle and lung endurance, as well as good form and breathing. Diet: I captured my diet for all meals last week and counted the calories. I have not weighed in to see if I have lost any weight yet, as I want to do that every two weeks. Life: Vacation is still scheduled...and the plan is to enjoy it and not work. I am fully engaged in week two, and Have a swim under my belt, a run and pushup workout done with more scheduled for today.
  2. Today is the day it kicks off. Weigh in will take place sometime today and then the plan is to run this afternoon and swim tomorrow morning. Good luck to all the rangers out there.
  3. I like how you incorporated your age into the amount of time you are committing to doing an activity....nice!
  4. I usually have my smart phone with me as well, so technically I can still "work" without the laptop. Those low end basic phones do one thing, and they do it well. They enable voice communication...otherwise known as phone calls. A total novel concept that a phone would be able to do what a phone is designed to do. Even though the technology isn't top of the line, the batteries usually last longer since they aren't receiveing facebook updates, and they are lighter than the smartphone (key for extended backpacking trips where ounces matter).
  5. Thanks Fengor for the post. I have a feeling that leaving the laptop at home for the vacation may be harder than doing 4 pullups or swimming 250 yards.
  6. Leave my laptop at home! *gasp* and be unplugged? Off the grid? .....you know what.....perhaps I will leave it at home. Thanks Chickie Monkey.
  7. Awesome movie.... Now I have to find the book and read it in the bookstore.
  8. I am a total newbie to Nerd Fitness, but this looks like a great place to find motivation to work out and get healthy. Goals: Weights Conduct weight training 4 times per week with the goal of managing to do 4 pullups in 6 weeks. Pullups are my nemesis...and for whatever reason I cannot do one without a jump, band, weight assistance, or bounce incorporated into it. Pullup >1 = F 1=D 2=C 3=B 4=A Cadrio Swim and run over the next 6 weeks to improve my cardio with the goal of swimming 250 yards without stopping and run 4 miles without stopping. Time is of no concern...and touching the wall of a lap pool doesn't count as stopping. Stopping at the end of the lap pool and gasping for air does. Run without stopping >1 mile=F 1=D 2=C 3=B 4=A Swim without stopping >100 yards = F 100 = D 150=C 200=B 250=A Diet Count my calories (as much as I hate it) with the goal of losing 12 pounds in the next 6 weeks. Weight loss 0-3lbs=F 4-6lbs=D 7-9lbs=C 10-11lbs=B 12+=A Life I have a vacation scheduled during this 6 week challenge and my goal is to enjoy the vacation. I know that sounds like an easy goal, but my typical vacation usually involves me on my phone or laptop checking emails and working for the majority of the vacation. I am worried that something "important" may happen that needs my attention or response. Then, when I return to work, I feel as if I need to take a vaction because all I really did was telecommute. Maybe the real lesson is to look at a verizon coverage map, pick out a spot that doesn't have any coverage, and take a vacation there.
  9. I am a total Newbie to the Nerd Fitness site, but have lifted weights for a while. Your 5x5 plan is a solid strength routine to follow. I like the simplicity of your goals...they make sense while still giving you a certain amount of freedom (the move it section). Good luck.
