  1. Thanks for subbing, i'm following you as well. Good luck to you too! I hear we are going to need it.
  2. Hey, welcome to the challenge. Im glad you decided to join even though its a day late. I intended to start last time but missed a week and just didn't even try. Lame, I know. How many pull ups are you at right now? I can only do 5 but would love to get 15-20 one day.
  3. Since I started school I have become more curious about what is going on with things like sugar and if it is as bad as some people say. You can find tons of Yahoo articles and Ehow crap about how bad it is but come on....give me the science! Show me the experiments! I found this one on Google Scholar this afternoon. Its pretty damning for the "white poison" C.H. Wideman et al Nutritional Neuroscience 2005 The effect of intermittent glucose administration on the circadian rhythm of body temperature was studied in rats to provide evidence of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse. Metabolic and behavioral phenomena were also observed. Biotelemetry transmitters recorded body temperature for the duration of the 4-week experiment. Rats were divided into an experimental and a control group, which were maintained on the same habituation conditions for the duration of the experiment, with the exception of weeks 2 and 4, when the experimental group was presented with a 25% glucose solution. Experimental animals displayed a precipitous drop in body temperature and behavioral changes associated with withdrawal during week 3, when sugar was removed. There was an increase in kilocalories (kcal) consumed during weeks 2 and 4 by experimental animals and, by the end of the experiment, these animals showed a greater percent increase in body weight. Elevated blood glucose levels were found in experimental animals. The study demonstrates that the effects of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse are similar to those of drugs of abuse. Implications of the rewarding and addicting effects of sugar are related to weight gain, obesity and Type II diabetes. Furthermore, pitfalls related to dieting are elucidated. So it looks like you were right, you can become addicted to sugar and you can go into physiologic withdrawal when you don't have it. That is kinda scary along with all the type 2 diabetes, weight gain and that type of stuff. Our brains do need it, but our body is capable to breaking down complex carbs via glycogenolysis or fructose or other sugars that we eat and providing glucose that way. I am not a no sugar nazi, I like it as much as the next person, but too much can be very bad. And like you said, its hard to keep from having too much!
  4. Yesterday I performed one of Ross's "Warrior Challenges" which are scheduled every Monday Work Capacity 101 (workloads reduced so I don't die) 3 pull ups 5 medicine ball slams 7 burpees 10 jumping jacks Completed 7 rounds in 20 minutes Today Ran 2 miles in 16:43 Core workout 5 ab rollout from knees 10 V ups 10 russian twists 15 supermans 10 chinnies X3 sets Man am I tired. I think Im going to take a rest day tomorrow and pick it back up on Thursday. The meditation is going well, I haven't done any handstand work this week, but I will pick that up for a brief session tomorrow morning. I can really see how posting workouts and progress for all to see can help you stick to your goals! Good luck to everyone.
  5. Thanks everyone! I wish all of you luck as well. I love Roanoke, its a beautiful town. If i didn't love the beach so much I might consider living out that way. Right now I am just getting comfortable kicking up into the handstand position. It feels unnatural right now for sure. I kick up to a wall and try to push myself off just far enough to balance. I can only get a couple seconds before I loose balance or my forearms get tired. Im working on it 3-4 times a week, we will see how it goes! Have you tried any handstands in the past? I am brand new to this so my progress might be slow.
  6. This fits right in with one of my challenge goals. Im in! Years ago I bought the Idiots Guide to Zen Living. It was a great read and had lots of information about meditation. Im going to have to pull it back out.
  7. I am in the same boat with the kids waking up and wreaking havoc on my carefully crafted plans. My early morning meditation ( my fingers always type medication first, is that a subconscious hint?) will hopefully help with that. Good luck!
  8. I like the idea of playing more on the playground. It was so much fun back when we were kids. Why would it not be fun now?! Cleaning is something I can always work on, especially with all these kids running around the house. My wife and I are in the middle of a massive junk purge. We will have our first yard sale since getting married almost 5 years ago.
  9. Hey everyone, long time lurker first time poster. I am excited about participating in my first 6 week challenge! I have followed Nerd Fitness for awhile but never made the commitment to sign up for a challenge. My wife and I are both on the road to improve our fitness levels. I figured this is a great way to get some external motivation and find some accountability. My name is a funny story. My last name is Lee and my grandfather's last name was Brock. My mother always loved the name and wanted to name her son after him, but when she married my dad she realized that she could never name her son Brock Lee. I think that it would have been impossible to make it through Elementary school I have always loved the name and figured that my fellow nerds would appreciate it. So for my first challenge I want to keep things simple and straight forward. 1. Stick with one dang workout program for 6 weeks. When I have exercised in the past I become way to advanced and smart to follow a program after about 2 weeks. I start changing things and then I workout less and less then two months later I start the whole thing over again. I have chosen Infinite Intensity by Ross Enamait as it incorporates many BW techniques and some weight training. The workouts include Oly lifting, sandbag training, pistols and 1 arm pushups. I can't do any of the last two but I will be working towards it. It seems like a great program and I am ready to get started. 2. Handstand. I would like to do a 30 second handstand without support. I am currently working on progressions that I found on Beastskills.com 3. No alcohol. I am not working right now but will start my new job on July 1st. Since I finished school I have been drinking way too much. Cutting out booze will go a long way to making me feel more healthy. 4. 10 minutes meditation every morning. I have a wife and 4 children here at home with me. The days start out crazy and pretty much stay that way. I feel that 10 minutes of quiet meditation before the world goes nuts will help me to be a more patient person. Good luck to all my fellow Assassins! I can't wait to see the progress we all make over the next 6 weeks.
