  1. Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I don't really know how one "learns to swim better"...I mean, I know *how* to swim, I'm just terribly uncoordinated at it. I can't do regular pushups because that bends my toes back...I can't do *anything* that bends my toes back at all, it re-injures the ligament. The other stuff I should be able to do so I will try the other routines, so long as I can get my foot to stay flat. So sucky though because I'm used to doing everything in Vibrams (I don't even have traditional athletic shoes anymore) and I have to get some stiff soled shoes to keep my foot from t
  2. I know ALOOOOOOT of hoopers. It's a HUGE thing, particularly in the circus/fire performance arts and burner (as in Burning Man) communities, and great exercise for sure. It's considered a skill toy/object manipulation movement art, like juggling or poi (ever see vids of performers usually at resorts in Hawaii or some such spinning around balls of fire on chains? Those are poi). There are many other skill toys like this, and you can get almost every skill toy in either fire (with kevlar wicks to dip in fuel and burn) or glow (with any color of LED light imaginable), or neither (like a normal ho
  3. Long time no see, NF rebels. How goes it? Unfortunately, not too well on my end. Amongst an avalanche of other crap that's happened in my life over the past few months, I injured my left foot. I've had chronic ankle problems there (it sprains if I look at it the wrong way), and now I've got another injury in the same foot. I was in VFFs and tripped and landed HARD on the ball of my left foot with my weight sort of overly forward...so it BADLY bruised the ball (to the point where I was concerned it could be a stress fracture) and I think badly strained the plantar fascia (the ligaments that r
  4. I know I'm a little late to the party here, but I PROMISE you don't need anyone to teach you poi, staff, rope dart, meteor, fire hooping, juggling, or other fire/object manipulation arts. I'm heavily involved with the burner (as in Burning Man)/circus arts community here in Atlanta, so almost all my friends spin fire or do object manipulation of some form, and all of them learned the majority of what they know via videos, youtube, etc. I don't know anyone that's taken formal lessons, or anywhere that even offers them regularly. Most spinners these days learn from vids online, and then pick up
  5. Sooo after the hash I ran the other night, I noticed an awful pain in my heel. I did some research on ye olde fount of medical knowledge for the uninsured (webmd and wikipedia) and I seem to have symptoms of plantar fasciitis. I was hoping I was being a hypochondriac, but it's days later and it still hurts just the same. I tried jogging today to no avail, it hurt. Now I don't know what to do. Other than stretching my feet and achilles tendon and icing my heels, I don't know if there's anything I CAN do. WTF I thought this only happened to like, real runners? I'm guessing it's a combination
  6. Yay hoopers and spinners and dancers and drummers! Alethea and Crowbeak, are either of y'all near Atlanta by chance? We have a huge circus arts community here within the huge burner (as in Burning Man and regional burns) community. It's alot of fun! I never thought of drumming as a nice low grade activity, but that's great! I play bodhran (Irish drum) but would love to take up djembe or doumbek. We have a huge drum circle and fire artists gathering twice a month here, so it's perfect!
  7. I know it's not magically going to do anything...I could just use more protein in my diet in general, and would prefer it from a natural, vegan source. I try to stay away from soy as it's pretty much all genetically engineered. ObsessionKilled- try the natural foods sections or natural health food stores, rather than the GNC type things. There are definitely simple, natural, vegan protein supplements, usually based in soy and hemp and such. They just tend to be like 100-200 calories, which I can't afford to throw around.
  8. I have green smoothies for breakfast almost every morning...some fresh fruit, spinach and water. I've done different seeds and stuff in them...chia, hemp, etc...but I would love to find a protein powder of some sort to add some more solid protein to my diet, but all of them are so high calorie! Any suggestions? Major bonus points if it's a vegan source...(i.e. not from dairy/whey, eggs, etc...)
  9. They make a good veggie burger. http://www.theveggietable.com/recipes/v ... rgers.html There's a million lentil veggie burger recipes out there, that was just the first one google pulled up.
  10. I've heard about this and keep meaning to try it! I just bought a bunch of bananas...I'll have to set a couple aside to overripen, then try this. Another way to make delicious healthy vegan ice cream: young (AKA Thai) coconuts! http://www.thenaughtyvegan.com/youngcoconut.htm <--also explains how to open them! Basically, you'll drain the coconut water into a cup and set aside. Then once you have the coconut completely cracked open, scrape all the meat out with a spoon into a blender (the higher powered the blender the better). The meat of a young coconut is thin and very very soft (almost li
  11. +1. I hated running and anything like it. It inspired me and made me want to run like crazy. I loved the spirit of it too, the young couple running to Beat poetry, the values of Caballo Blanco, and the more proof to the fact that the human body is perfectly evolved and living naturally is the healthiest way to be, and corporations are basically effing us up and creating problems for us so they can create more things to "fix" them that cause more issues so they can make more money. (I'm pretty anti-corporate)
  12. People who don't know the difference between your/you're and they're/their/there. Although I've mistyped them myself before, but it's a careless mistake...I know the difference! Pointless, endless arguments about whether iPhones/Android phones and Macs/PCs are better. I love Mac computers for a list of reasons, but dislike iPhones and stick w/Androids for a list of reasons. But listening to people fight about it constantly is like beating a dead horse with another dead horse.

  14. Hey you mentioned Great Big Sea! They're my favorite band!!!! :D:D When working out I listen to alot of GBS, Gaelic Storm, Flogging Molly, and Dropkick Murphys. The Irish punk especially keeps me going.
