  1. Hey, what a fabulous question. I eat kosher, because I'm a religious Jew; I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only one here, but you never know. I can't tell you about any changes to my health, because I've been eating this way my whole life. What I can tell you, though, is that the kosher laws, aside from being spiritually healthy, are also considered physically healthy. Kosher is more than just staying away from pig and seafood - it also requires the complete separation of meat and dairy, of fish and meat, bug-less veggies and other things (like not consuming blood.) For various reasons, I also follow a plant-based diet, so I don't eat any animal products. This is a very paleo-centered place, but from the research I've done, it seems staying away from animal products in general is definitely a healthy way to eat. Maimonides also talks about meat and what's better and what's worse. Also fish and dairy. Interesting to note is that before the Great Flood, G-d did not allow people to consume animals. That's the way He originally created the world. If you, or anyone else, is interested in more detailed (and long-winded) information about kosher, Maimonides or whatnot, feel free to contact me.
  2. Great thread. I'm also thin and not what the fitness industry would call "toned." But I'm working it. Thanks for the helpful answers.
  3. Welcome to this Very. Amazing. Site! (But you knew that's what it is already.) A question: do you fear the plague? Or do you just like that picture? I'm vegan too, which can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable around here, but there are more of us lurking around and the truth of the matter is, the food focus here is more on good, wholesome, real food than on legumes/grains vs. chicken/fish/eggs. A plant-based diet has far more in common with a paleo diet than a SAD diet. Good luck with your goals!
  4. Hi fellow Canadian! Cutting out soda is always a good start and you're 100% right - a free way to work out is fabulous. Lucky that your job has built-in exercise. (All my job exercises is my fingers!)
  5. It took me eons to cut out sugar completely (meaning even honey, maple syrup, brown rice syrup, molasses etc. as I've been off white sugar for years), but then finally I just did it. It was from one day to the next and I'm still shocked. It actually happened after a dentist appointment. Don't ask. Regardless, when the right frame of mind hits, seize the moment! High five for all your efforts from someone who completely understands the "I'm going to go lay down for about a week because my joints are visibly swollen and if I keep standing I will start crying profusely" feeling.
  6. Hmm... Thanks for the thoughts. If I do get them, I'll let you know how it goes.
  7. Does anyone have experience wearing Vibram FiveFingers with inflammation in their feet? I read about FiveFingers in one of Steve's posts and was intrigued. Turns out my absolutely favourite slippers (which are sandals in real life) are Vibrams and they feel excellent. Working out completely barefoot can be hard on my feet sometimes, so I'm hoping FiveFingers might have just enough support and cushioning while still giving me the feeling of being barefoot. Any thoughts?
  8. Fine, fine. I can just about handle the blow to my feminine pride. So funny - I also had my ballet phase as a child and then went on to hate it. I'm very interested again, though. An autoimmune disease or inflammatory disease forum would be great!
  9. Wolf no like sugar either - it's a scourge. Good luck with getting back on your feet. (Literally.)
  10. Welcome! There's always room for another Canadian. The question is, do you say "abowt" or "abote"?
  11. Sounds like an amazing set of goals! Good luck with them. (Try ginger tea - yum;)
  12. A fellow wolf! Hi. (So I'm a bit late - dreadfully sorry.) Ooh, you're in Israel. Nice. What was it like serving in the Tzahal;) as a fitness instructor? Do you know Krav Maga? I consider myself a very part-time druid, as part of a greater assassin-y identity with some monk thrown in. Kind of like a wolf, I guess. Join the pack! Last question: what naturopathy school are you attending and is it in English?
  13. Whoa - can't a wolf be a girl? I got arthritis at 17; I've been healthy - it's nice. There are also tiger claws, and kendo sticks, and ballet shoes.
