  1. I hope the Brits among you made it through the storm. We had some pretty severe weather, most of the public transit got knocked out by trees today.
  2. Ok, that's the project. Some work remains and hopefully everybody can log on on monday. Phew. Friday starts my second rotation and after that there's going to be a weekend that is spent entirely in bed
  3. Hi Arillian Princess, the not smoking before work goal is not so good. Last week I did all workouts but one and got a new set of weights. I'll have have to put more effort into the not smoking goal. Hmm, yes. Weekend is again busy. Just now we're doing the second part of bringing the system into production. Hope all goes well.
  4. Ha, I went to the local Linux User Group and held a workshop on POSIX Shell Scripting. That was an interesting experience. I knew nobody beforehand and a LUG meeting is something of an event where you can have a beer. There were approx. 12 people in attendance and at times these were rather raucous, especially during the phases where people would work on their computers. But it felt good. I had to leave out some things and overran the time by 15 minutes but it was nice. Also on monday our project at work went into pilot phase and is now partially productive. All workouts for last week done. Hmm, I'm thinking about the smoking goal. I would really like to achieve the goal of not smoking before work. That would be really good. I feel a tired with all this stuff. You could probably lead a slower life.
  5. Hi Sulinar, not very good. I've a background weight goal, which I'll probably miss tomorrow. Last week was terrible, I did not all workouts and no running. This week went better I did all my workouts and got to run 2.5 km, which is not much. But I learned that I actually like the "go running, then do a workout" format a lot. It just feels great to go running for 15 minutes and then do some bodyweight exercises. Also last week was pretty much shitty for the smoking goal, I didn't smoke in the flat but I wanted to defer smoking to the point I arrive at work and have a double espresso in my hand. That didn't work out. Partly because last week was only two days to actually try. We had a national holiday (reunification) and I took some days off. Also a friend has a diabetic foot (he's 64) and the last weeks did not see as much improvement as we would have liked. They amputated two toes and part of the foot. Now it's talk about amputating the whole foot. My grandfather is in the hospital and my cousin had an early birth of her third son and is in the hospital. My dads birthday was last week, but luckily there's no pressure to actually appear in person. Also this years most important project at work is going live next weekend.... Phew. There. Missing my target weight goal is probably minor. I readjusted my diet during the free time and that's it. No big deal. You get used to it. As long as you get back on track everything will be fine. The occasinal setback is to be expected.
  6. Hi guys, the short form is, that I had to adjust goals. I didn't stop completely. For now I'm not smoking in my flat. I've been doing that since monday and it works. I'll slowly reduce this. First and foremost, the immediate stench from the cigarettes is gone and I'm slowly cleaning up. There's also a psychological advantage: usually when trying to stop I look instinctively at the places where the tobacco used to be placed, I'm not doing that any longer, it's placed in my jacket. The downside: I've to go outside in the most horrible weather you could imagine and smoke outside. The plan is to reduce this slowly: Skip morning cigarettes and go straight to work, then skip evening cigarettes. Next reduce cigarettes at work. I'm not sure what I'll do on weekends or evenings out. Basically I just try to improvise as I go along. The plus side is, that I've already more time. In the evening I don't sit in front of the computer and smoke cigarette after cigarette. So there's the time for cleaning up is really nothing I've to carve out of a busy schedule. Let's see what works out. If by monday I stuck to not smoking in my flat I declare a significant first victory, although I may not reach my final goal. Bear with me. On a happyier note: the other goals are working out. I'll catch up with you on sunday
  7. KingLeeroy: you might enjoy or The first is from "Die Sterne" (The Stars), from way back when I was young, they sing about how fascinating Berlin is. The latter is from Kraftklub, and they basically sing: "I don't want to go to Berlin". Kraftklubs song being a major hit this summer Sorry if the links are crappy videos, youtube is basically broken in Germany. LadyWitch: Yes you can! http://scummvm.org/ is an interpreter for the game files that runs on anything modern. The only thing you need is the original media. Ouch. Had a cramp in my stomach area, trying crunches. This was really something, you get cramps in areas you didn't think were possible.
  8. Doing 100 pushups is just awesome. I tried the program earlier this year and I was just dumbfounded after 3 weeks when I changed the form and could hardly do a single one. In hindsight that's actually an advantage of bodyweight exercises. You can do them as hard or as easy as you need them to be. 100 pushups is a significant accomplishment, you'll get there!
  9. Hmm, books. I used to read a lot while I was in secondary school. But somehow I lost all the longing for books. Last month I picked up some nicely read (english, not my native tongue) sci-fi short stories in audio form. It was really nice to sit in front of the house or just anywhere, listening to them. From what I hear from coworkers, doing physio exercises really gets you in a better shape pretty quickly. I hope you get well soon
  10. Thanks guys for the nice words! From the past attempts I would say that it's hardest if you get frustrated or angry, also after a meal is a time when I desperately want a cigarette. Today I reviewed around 250 pages for the life goal and basically I took breaks to smoke. Now I don't want to get highly efficient in reviewing documentation. I want to keep my efficiency and stop smoking. So basically I'll have to get into a different break pattern. Last year I was toying around with the pomodoro technique: basically you set a timer to 25 minutes, then work a full 25 minutes on a single task. Then take a short break for 3 to 5 minutes. This is a pomdoro. After four pomodori take 15 to 30 minutes off. That sounds like easy going, but isn't. When you stop your task every ten minutes to check your mail inbox you're breaking the pomodoro. These 5 minutes in between are exactly for things like brewing a tea, checking your inbox, chatting with friends, etc. Basically I smoke everywhere and this could be a way to get myself out of the cigarette mood for the larger part of the day. This works for the periods where I do stuff at home like preparing my workshop and for most of the work day. I need to try this. Today was two cigarettes in the morning (way below what I smoke usually) and then 3 cigarettes after lunch with an uncounted number in the evening. I'd usually be at 20 a day. So the goal for tomorrow is, to get to work asap, and allow for a cheat cigarette after lunch. Squashing pomodori the entire morning.
  11. Country: Germany (Hamburg) Best thing you've done in the past 24 hours: kicking my own ass by trying 80 pushups Where is one place you want to go: the Ruhrgebiet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_der_Industriekultur visiting the route of industrial culture Color of shoes you are currently wearing: black socks Favorite video game (any console): no console, but Day of the Tentacle Favorite author: Gogol Favorite sport: running probably, but I do watch football occasionally
  12. Hi Sulinar, C25K rocks. It's really well balanced, when you get to the later stuff, it's sometimes just a matter of convincing yourself that you can do it. Really the hardest part is in the beginning. The short intervals do a good job of preparing you for the longer intervals. You can do it!
  13. Wow, I just changed my workout and I think the joy will carry over to tomorrow, or... not :/ The idea seems to be to workout your muscles until they're exhausted. The goal was to do 20-20-20-20 push-ups (among other things). Certainly I can do these on my knees. After 10 this was boring. After 20 I felt my muscles reeling. After 50 I was squealing and couldn't keep form. I continued to 80 but this probably looked like some bug trying to get free. It just blows my mind sometimes. I really thought doing these on your knees would qualify as light exercise and got a free lecture on what grind means. But that's pretty good
  14. Hi Sulinar, terosx, thanks for the nice words! I don't have a plan other than "don't buy tabacco ever again". I roll myself, which is taxed less and many find it tastes better *blech*. All people that stopped smoking that I know of basically stopped cold turkey, I only know of a colleage that kept a "cheat" pack in his drawer at work and would smoke one after dinner until they ran out. I know of some people that simply can't seem to get addicted, but I'm not one of them. So cold turkey it is
