  1. Java, C#, and ASP.NET/PHP are highly recommended since it appears you're heading down the web applications development path. I've found that larger business use mostly Windows IIS webservers which utilize ASP.NET and smaller businesses use LAMP servers (Linux Apache mySQL PHP) which best utilize PHP. If you're a student (ugrad or grad) you should check out http://www.dreamspark.com. You can get almost any Windows based server or application development software package for free. I think you need a valid student ID number at that's all.
  2. I'd like to focus on diet, mainly what foods should I be eating versus what I am already eating, and new meal ideas/recipes. Cooking is something the wife and I enjoy and we're always looking for new ideas. I understand the exercise (cardio, interval, weight, etc) and the need for a well-rounded regime. It's just a battle to find the time with work from 7:00am-5:00pm and grad school from 5:45pm-9:50pm twice a week. So far (for 2 weeks) I've been able to get 3 to 4 of your Beginner Body Weight Circuit workouts in each week in addition to one or two cardio sessions. I'm already down from 220lbs to 218lbs, so something must be working You're welcome! If you're asking if I own the databases I maintain, I sure feel like I do. My office refuses to move to newer products so we are stuck with Access 2007. The databases were originally constructed in 2000. The university recently switched student information software systems. Another co-worker and I had to (essentially) rebuild these Access databases to match the new data coming in. It's been a nightmare. When I hear the word "Implementation" my skin crawls.
  3. That would be me. I caught the damned Swine Flu (or so the doctor said). I had to call the airline, inform them than I was a Typhoid Mary carrying Hamthrax, had to call the hotel, etc. The flu sucked. But....PAX was awesome. Tri-Wizard Drinking Tourney FTW. RAVENCLAW, CAW-CAAAAAW!
  4. Following what Sethbacca said...watch those additives. Black coffee is perfectly awesome. Start adding sugar, creamer, etc, and it goes downhill quickly. Simple sugars are most easily converted to fat (ie, that spoonful you throw in your coffee each morning is lead conductor on teh fat train). Complete sidenote: Has anybody ever noticed that impossible to remove, waxy yet greasy, film that powdered creamer leaves on your coffee mug? When I saw that I thought, "Christ, if it does that to a ceramic mug, what does it look like in my intestine?!"
  5. It's a good theory, I try to follow it when I can. You just need to be mindful -- if you're used to engorging to that full feeling, your "hunger sense" will be off. That "not hungry anymore" mark is a sliding scale and it's affected by your eating patterns/habits, in this case it can be set artificially high. You will notice that you may feel hungry sooner after a meal, too (at least I do). It's all about changing what's "old-and-unhealthy normal" to "new-and-healthy normal" and, after a few days, your sliding hunger scale will adjust in the better direction. I think your metaphor is spot on, btw
  6. Us Texans are rebels at heart so my friend (jacoblee) didn't have to push to hard to get me signed up. My name is Brian Borski, I'm 25 (going on 26), and have lived in Galveston, TX for the last 7 years. It's a little island town stuck on the very muddy waters of the Gulf of Mexico. I work at Texas A&M University at Galveston as a Programmer/Analyst. I essentially perform a lot of "11th hour, oh-my-science the world is ending, my brain's on fire" ad-hoc database work and reporting for the Admissions and Records department. This has led me to discover that I am a stress eater. I went from 6'0" 190lbs out-of-shape programmer to a 6'0" 220lbs REALLY out-of-shape programmer. I've recently added grad school to the mix which has forced what little diet I had to dissipate completely. Like many people, I'm not super athletic but I do go for walks on the beach with the dog(s) (see epic mount in my avatar), boogie board a little, swim at the university when I can. I've picked up the basic body weight circuit workout posted here in order to get some workouts in in-between work and class. My biggest challenge is, and has been, making the life-change and sticking with it. I've tried several times. During college, I got down to around 175lbs and had some muscle built. I then joined the sedentary working zombie-force that is the "real world" and gained back all the weight and then some. My daily diet usually consists of a light breakfast of a granola bar and 2 cups of coffee. Lunch is usually some sort club sandwich (wheat bread, turkey, ham, American cheese, bacon, mustard) on a good day. On a bad day, it's a single patty burger with jalapenos. Dinner is either a home cooked meal (spaghetti with wheat pasta, sausage, steak and taters, etc), a frozen pizza, 4 frozen taquitos, or another sandwich. The diet is carb heavy, sodium heavy, and lacking protein. I try to watch the Nutritional Values on everything I eat and generally try to avoid foods where more than 30%-40% of the total calories are from fat. Sorry for the wall of text ya'll. I look forward to sharing, helping and celebrating the successes with every other rebel out there.
