  1. I know we've all been lead to think that emotional eating is a woman thing, but I've always been a very emotional eater. The more stressed I am, the more I eat. As for what works for me, I have a yo-yo (no joke) that I do when I am stressed. I've also been known to have a cigar once a month or every other month (not that healthy, but better than eating a bucket of ice cream 5 to 10 times per month... besides - cigar smoke isn't for lung inhaling anyways). I'm trying to phase it all out by just getting more active. Going hiking and walking helps a great deal. Also gorging on water in place of food. Lightly flavored water could work.
  2. Coming back from Iraq last year, I was in the best shape I had been in years. Nerd Fitness helped a lot with that. I challenged myself on a daily basis, but there all I did was work and then workout. Then I got home. In the process of settling in at home, I let things get in the way. Finances, school (I returned to finish my bachelors degree), and family occupied my time. I tried a few times to recapture that motivation, but it's been fleeting. These days, I stress about finishing my bachelors degree (graduate in May!) with the limited income I have and the reserve funds I set aside for me and the family. Over the summer, I realized that I am a fan of hiking. This is funny, because in the Army I HATED our version of hiking. I've decided to level up my life by using my love of hiking and my competitive nature to lay out a long list of goals in a similar manner to Steve here at Nerd Fitness. I'm very achievement-oriented. Most of my goals will not be body-related. The improved body is just a byproduct of improved health. The target is to continually improve how I feel and challenge myself. I've got quite a few ideas swimming around that I'll be putting into a formal document soon, but I am open to suggestions. So far, definite additions to my list include events like "Run for Your Lives" and the Pike's Peak Ascent. I'd also like to add playing basketball competitively, and have even toyed around with an amateur MMA fight or learning brazilian jiu jitsu. I've got plenty of hiking trail goals to lay out, as well. Time is a factor, but I'd say money is going to be the biggest factor. Thanks for letting me ramble in my own little space here on Nerd Fitness!
  3. This is my official policy, too. LOL Unofficially, I need to clear out the insulation!
  4. Cool stuff! Anything nerdy that makes me exercise is a-okay in my book. LOL
  5. I wish you nothing but the best! The hardest thing I have ever had to do on a single income (Mine) with a wife and two kids was to leave my job and continue down the path to completing my education. It has been almost a year since I returned from Iraq for those very reasons and we're hanging in there! It can be done!
  6. My wife's best friend actually has a similar problem with anemia. I feel for you. I really hope that it is curable or that you are able to manage!
  7. Thank you. You made my day, because this is exactly what I am for... to give my son as many opportunities as I can. I think we all listen to doctors too much. My wife told me via Skype yesterday that the doctor said "If you're worried, bring him in" in reply to her asking about a specific symptom. I told her that it was a cop out on the part of the doctor, because obviously the doctor saw nothing worth worrying about... but had no qualms taking our money.
  8. I can sympathize because my five year old son has type 1 diabetes and a blood disorder called ITP. I also was injured in Iraq and have to do all exercises around a severe back injury and knee injury. I figure if I can stay in shape and lead a healthy lifestyle, my son will benefit from it, learning how to be healthy himself!
  9. I'm Trevor Murdoch's favorite ring announcer. ) I've worked with Mike Sydal (Evan Bourne's brother), Roddy Piper, and a few guys in WWE developmental in the past. Harley Race runs the promotion right down the road from me and the guy that runs Metro Pro Wrestling in Kansas City (where I ring announced before this trip to Iraq) is a former WWE writer. You should check out their stuff on Youtube. I've worked MsChif in the past, too. I enjoy some of CHIKARA and ROH. I like DGUSA and am a big Jigsaw and YAMATO fan!
  10. Thanks man! Because of Iraq, my last show was in Kansas City in November, but I'm hoping I'm back at it again in short order!
  11. Thanks! Here in Iraq, the Paleo diet is a little more difficult, as most of the food is processed here that is served at the chow hall... but I'm toying around with it and have definitely been looking at the blog for ways to challenge myself. Viva Le Resistance. )
  12. Thanks for this link. I've got it in the chute for reading this afternoon... although I'll admit I went to #24 to check it out first, lol
  13. Well folks, I wanted to jump in here and get involved right away. I found this site through The Art of Manliness and loved it from the get-go. I am a former soldier and Korean linguist, a military intelligence professional, a rapper, a professional wrestling ring announcer, a nerd, a blogger, and above all of that, a husband and a father. I am in Iraq at the present, but I have about 45 days before I close this long chapter of my life and focus more on my blog project Real Men, Real Dads (www.realmenrealdads.com). I’ve promised my wife I will never deploy without my family for months to a year at a time again, which means my blog has to be successful and/or I’ve got to change professions! My family made it very clear to me that they are ready for me to be home. I owe it to them to give them what they want. I'm hoping this place will help me be more fit and help me challenge myself!
