Will! Awesome to see you posting again!

Looks like you are still doing a lot of stuff! :)

How are you doing (besides working out a lot)? :)

    Swampling!! Hey there :D

    How have you been?

And I've been doing alright! I'm still taking classes at the local college—made it into Precalculus I, so I'm excited for that! I've been keeping up with the Philosophy stuff too. Other than that, though, not much to report: just been trudging along as per usual, through all the ups and downs :pride:

  5. I've been a bit busy over the past month, and I haven't recorded every workout I've done in that span of time, so I'll just post the most recent one here. Also gonna' convert pounds into kilograms for now, because learning how the Metric System works sounds like fun, and this seems like a good starting point.

Notes: I've been struggling, but pushing forward. Just been wading through a bit of an existential crisis lately. Well, more like, I'm dealing with it more face-to-face now. This has been a pervasive feeling for quite a few years, just more pushed down, hidden from view. And also trying to make sense of what I think might be a fear of intamacy has been... uncomfortable, to say the least. I kinda' feel all over the place, ungrounded, and stuck in my own head.

So that all has gotten me interested in Psychology and Philosophy (that, and coming to realize just how deeply Xenogears and Xenoblade Chronicles weave those two elements into their narratives). I've been doing a bit of research on my own, just for the heck of it.

I still don't know much at all, but so far, I've read a bit about Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Sigmund Freud's stuff is interesting, but I feel he had an over emphasis on the Human Sex Drive to describe how and why we work the way we do, and quite a negative view of the unconscious. From what I've read, it seems like Carl Jung's theories fit more closely to reality, with things like the Cognitive Functions to describe the Conscious and Unconscious mind. And honestly, I like that view better, from what I've read so far. Cognitive Functions are an interesting framework through which to view the world. But overall, it still feels like conjecture, and I'd like to research and read through more theories that are grounded in the hard sciences, looking why we work the ways we do, on a physical and chemical scale.

On another note, the Oil Painting class fell through, because we missed a payment, and thus my spot got dropped. So I opted to instead go with a Math class. Since it'd been years since I'd been in a Math class, and I wasn't sure which class I'd be qualified to take, I just chose the lowest available class they had: Basic Algebra. I needed a refresher anyways, so I'm fine with it.

Being in that class though has gotten me quite interested in Mathematics again. Memories of how things work in Trigonometry and Calculus came flooding back after the first few days, so that was fun. I also found Set Theory to be quite interesting, particularly stuff dealing with Large cardinals, such as (Aleph-null), and beyond. The ways you can mess around with infinite values, to find even bigger ones, and just Carnality in the first place, and it's effects, are mind-bogglingly fun!

And other than that, I've been practicing the beginnings of Mixed Martial Arts frequently. Since I don't like to lift on the same day I practice, for fear of overworking myself, my lifting days have been cut from three days a week, to one; but I'm fine with that. I'll still be getting stronger, and honestly, I'd rather being going bit slower than I possibly could, instead of pushing it too far, and getting injured again.

I've recently been practicing with open handed strikes, and man do they feel good. And I can use them to combo into other moves a lot easier than with closed fists! It's awesome! And that's not to say a closed fist strike doesn't have it's place, it can still be useful (if just a bit more risky, because I run the risk of breaking my fingers / knuckles if I hit something too off-form), but I do prefer open handed strikes after practicing with them for a bit.

Plus, my knuckles were getting a bit tender from all the punching on the bag, so this gives me a new way to train; that way, I won't over do it with my knuckles, and just make them get injured from over inflammation.

Also kicks. Knees and kicks are fun.

I feel that I need to keep working on my slip, and hook. They could definitely use some improvement, along with my footwork. And man, my arms were tired by the end of it, but it was quite fun regardless  :rapture:

  8. OH HI!

Such timing we have. I just logged on to start all over again with this madness once more. Glad to see you're back at it as well!

Baby steps are very good indeed - don't forget about the rules of the rebellion: where you're going is the important part ;)

    WOOHOO!!! Cinalyc! You're back  :triumphant:

Glad to see you again, man  :pride:

How've you been? What've you been up to?  :rapture:

And yeah, baby steps! I'll get to where I'm going eventually – one step at a time. I've come this far, so I might as well keep striving forward  :pride:

I thought I started it when I started running, but when I pulled it out to see how long I'd been gone, it was still on the "Start Timer" screen. Oops. Also, this includes me stopping to walk occasionally, because it's really hilly where I'm at, and I'm not used to it, because it's been a little while since I've ran around.

Notes: I wanted to give my arms and legs a bit of a break, and focus more on my core. The last workout I did left me feeling really sore for a few days, so I figured I'd go light on the Push-ups, and the run. Though, I was probably feeling so sore because I'd forgotten to stretch as much as I should have afterwards. Heh heh, oops. But I stretched this time though! So hooray for that :D

  11. Sorry to hear about the rough times - and interesting to hear how the college course system in the US works. Sounds strange to me, but I went to college a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... ;)

Glad that you rediscovered martial arts for yourself. Almost a black belt, eh? :encouragement:

Baby steps are good, as long as you end up moving in the direction you want to go, everything's good. :)

Please keep us posted how you're doing, mmmkay? :cheerful:

Yeah, the college system here is... "interesting." Ahh well. As long as I get the chance to learn some new things, and push myself forward, then I'm fine  :rapture:

(and I see that Star Wars reference. Did you see Episode VII yet? I've been trying to get myself caught up with the whole saga by re-watching the prequels [since I haven't seen them since I was a child], and the original trilogy [since I don't think I've seen it at all], before I go see Episode VII. So far I've watched The Phantom Menace [which was awesome, at least to me. It brought back a whole lot of memories of when I watched it as a kid, a bittersweet combination of happiness, and nostalgia. I know that a lot of people absolutely despise this movie, but since I went into the flick knowing, and expecting it to be, more of a political drama than an action movie, that probably greatly helped with my enjoyment of it overall. And I didn't find Jar Jar Binks all that annoying â€“ I didn't find him particularly "funny," but I felt he wasn't obtrusive enough to ruin my enjoyment of the movie], and then promptly got distracted by all the crap that went down around Christmas time. Heh heh, oops. I'll continue watching them again soon)

I know, right!? I was so damn CLOSE! *sigh* Oh well... I can't change the past. I'm just proud that far in the first place. And I was happy to hear from Mom that Sensei wasn't disappointed in me, or anything; he understood. I was also told by her than Sensei had said that (at least at time; I've no idea about now) I was one of the most athletically gifted students he'd ever taught (or something like that â€“ I can't remember the quote verbatim). Apparently, it all kind of came naturally to me back then. I may not have been the absolute "best" at it (I'm not sure, but I doubt I was), but I learned fast. That made me feel quite good (especially because I was told this as I was starting up my Boxing lessons), because, you know me: I've struggled with feeling like I'm good at anything for a long time now. It's time to start gaining some more competency and confidence in my skills again :D

Yeah! That's what I want to keep in mind. Things aren't going to get better overnight, but with each step I take, I'm slowly, but surely carving out my own path. Little by little, I evolve, advancing a bit further with each turn – just like a drill  :encouragement:

    I'll do my best :D

  12. WILL!

So good to see you, man! :cheerful: :cheerful:   :cheerful:

    How's life been treating you?

Thanks Swampling! Good to see you too  :rapture:

Life's been okay recently. Went through some rough stuff during the holidays, but I'm moving froward regardless, so I'm glad about that.

Started back up with Martial Arts again, after having not done any for quite a long time. I did Taekwondo as a child (almost made it to black belt, just one belt below; but I struggled with ADHA a lot back then, and would become hyper-focused on a task, thus making it difficult for me to switch from one thing to another. Mom got tired of my temper tantrums back then, and I just didn't like sparring, so I ended up stopping back then. Oh well. But I'm glad I at least made it as far as I did  :pride:), Karate while I was in Middle School, and Boxing now.

It feels nice to be learning a new skill. Since I've started with NF, I've just been gaining raw strength, but now I get to put that strength to use with something requiring me to hone my form. It's a fun change of pace  :rapture:

I've also signed up to take an Oil Painting class at the local college. Since I didn't fare too well in High School, I'm planning on easing myself back into this whole School thing. Baby steps.

(plus, I took some college classes back in High School [about five or six years ago by now] that I did horribly in, and unbeknownst to me, that shit's still on record. I thought I was starting with a clean slate, but nope: if I fail one more class, I won't be allowed to take anymore classes for the next two years. So, it's time to slowly, and carefully bring that GPA back up)

So yeah, still moving forward, one step at a time :D

  13. I second everything stealthstitcher said. This has everything to do with your 4 Week Challenge; so please, always feel free to share it here, if you feel you've no one else to go to (and even if you do, we're always happy to lend an ear).

I know you're hurting bad right now, so I don't know how much this'll mean, but for what it's worth, you're very strong for pushing forward in spite of all that's happened to you. Depression's not easy to deal with – I would know, because I've been fighting it just as you have â€“ but the fact that you've kept trying to stand back up after every time you fallen down, that right there shows your true Courage, your true Determination.

You might feel worthless, but you're not: you have worth to us here, your friends, your son, and worth just being alive. You have worth. You might feel unlovable, but you're not: people can do stupid things, and break our hearts. It doesn't make you a bad person, all it means was that you just happened to be in a bad situation. You might feel like you have no direction, lost in the shadows, but you'll forge your own way with every step forward you take. You're not alone, we'll all be here by your side.

It'll take a while, you won't just start feeling better overnight, but little by little, you'll find your own happiness. That's the hope I'm holding onto for myself, and the hope I hold onto for you, and all my friends. It'll take action, but it can be done. The future can be changed into one you wish to live.

And here's a song I like to listen to when either I'm feeling down, or just want to relax:

You can do it, msblt! Your Afterglow is coming back to light, with every step you take. It's okay to hurt, always allow yourself to feel your feelings, just keep pushing forward. And give yourself the time to rest that you'll need sometimes.

    --

Oh, and on a related note, I highly encourage you to keep those plans with your friends, if you're okay with it. I know the urge to hide away is strong, but the social interaction should help you from feeling even more isolated than you already feel. That's what always trips me up even more when I'm feeling down: I hide away. And the longer I hide away, the harder it is to come back, and thus the longer I end up hiding away. So please, I urge you, don't make the same mistake I've made a lot in the past. It's okay to have time to yourself if you need it, but try to still keep in regular contact with those you care about.

  14. Hey Swampling! You're doing awesome :D

Just wanted to finally drop on by and say hi  :rapture:

Make sure to let that wrist get the time it needs to heal. I second Shepherd Fox on the healing thoughts: sending as many your way as I can. Can you feel your wrist healing even more yet?

Anyways, I hope your day's been going well. Keep kicking ass, Swampling! Even if that means resting right now, in preparation for the next battle  ;)

  15. Thank you for the warm welcome shaarawy :)

It seems like I should start with the challenges for sure. I'm not really sure what to expect from the 4 week challenges yet, but it sounds like there are quests that we're given. When you suggested that I choose manageable goals for myself, did you mean to modify the quests that the 4 week challenge gives us since I'm just starting out? Just to clarify ^ ^

I haven't been good with forums so far, but hopefully I can be fairly active in this one and form good support networks as you've done :)

When it comes to the 4 Week Challenges, you get to set your own goals. Whatever you wish to improve upon, you get to work on. Fitness, diet, financial, social, learning a skill (or skills), school related stuff, self improvement, etc., you're allowed to set as a goal  :pride:

What I'm assuming shaarawy meant was just to make sure that the goals you're setting for yourself are realistic, and manageable. Like, for example, if you're struggling to reach 5 Pull-ups in one set, and you set your goal to make it to 25 Pull-ups in one set by the end of four weeks, you may be able to do that, but you'll probably burn yourself out by the end. You can do that if you so desired (it's not like it's frowned upon, or anything – this community's really open and caring, so not much is frowned upon other than someone being mean; and in the few years I've been here, I've run across very few mean people [and usually, I'd just not even engage, and instead make my way onto another part of the forum ]), it'll just be putting the "difficulty setting" on your challenge a bit high, which is a perfectly fine thing to do. But as a (I'm assuming) beginner, it might run the risk of burnout.

That's what's happened to me for quite a while, until I started to change my goals from "Get to here by such and such date," to "Just get better at such and such thing." Any progress was forward progress, no matter how big or small. That's what helped for me. But that's not the de facto "Right way," just "My way." That approach may or may not work for you, or another person, because it is a bit nebulous. The main thing is just to find a nice sweet spot where you're still pushing yourself, but not over exerting yourself constantly (which may take some time to find, so don't fret if it takes a bit, or if it changes, or something; you'll get the hang of it  :pride: ). You want to keep up your momentum, even if that means slowing down for a bit at times to take a breather. As long as you're still moving forward in one way or another, then that's all that matters  :rapture:

This NF article would probably say what I'm trying to convey better: The Mario Kart Guide to Momentum

Now, this isn't to say not to have ambitious long term goals; no, please, have as many awesome goals and dreams as you want – just make sure the short term steps along the way are within reach. If 25 Pull-ups is too much right now, focus on getting to 10. You will make it to 25 eventually, I know you will, it'll just take time.

But if you're still feeling lost, and haven't checked this page yet, this might help you brainstorm some ideas as to what to do starting out: LEVEL 1 SUGGESTED CHALLENGE QUESTS

(Oh, and with all the links I've posted, don't think any of this is, like, "Required Reading" or something â€“ if you feel you've got something, then you've probably got it. And I wouldn't want to try and overwhelm you by shoving a million different articles your way at once; I just want to leave any helpful resources here for future access, and whatnot)

Wow, I can't say enough how greatly helpful this was! Thank you - Will - for taking your time to make such a detailed beginners guide for me to follow along :)

The follow this topic button was super helpful too, since now I'll be able to see if people actually reply instead of having fortunately seen the likes you'd given to the other replies, which is what brought me back to my own post here haha.

This will probably be my reference for awhile until I get the hang of the place :)

I really appreciate the help everyone's given me so far and hope to contribute as well in the future ^ ^

No problem! I'm glad I was of some help :D

Though, after I finished that post, I stumbled across this one: How to Private Message (PM), Follow, Spoiler, and Progress Bar

It goes over the same stuff I did, plus a few extra bits, so it may be a more helpful guide.

And I'm sure you'll contribute here well! Strive towards your dreams and goals, Ninetails! Whatever you wish your future to be, you can change it to be so! It may not be easy, but it'll definitely be worth it! So stand tall, and seize your destiny! You can do it! I know you can :D

  16. Yo, this challenge is awesome! Just wanted to drop on by, and give some support  :rapture:

It's always fun to run into a fellow Zelda fan here. You're goal of becoming a legend is just like the one I started out with here (and still striving for, in one form or another): to become a Hero. I've no doubts that you'll become a legend one day â€“ you can do it!

Your grit and determination is inspiring! Keep on pushing forward, Dark Lady Link  :pride:

Notes: I don't currently have access to weights, because I'm at a friend's place, so I had to improvise. Since it's been a few weeks since I've done a workout outside of Boxing practice, and a little while since the last session, this workout was a bit difficult to complete, but hey, I got it in, so that's all that matters. In between sets, I would Shadow Box while I waited for the one minute rest period to pass, until it got to the point that throwing punches was taking too much out of me; so after that I would just rest, and take a sec. to catch my breath.

Oh, and if any of you from THE DAI-GURREN BRIGADE happen to stumble across this, I just want to say: thank you. Thank you for the friendship, and kindness you all showed to me long ago. I apologize for leaving without warning â€“ I'd gotten overwhelmed, and felt the need to hide away â€“ but I never stopped thinking of you all as friends.

I just... wanted that to be known. Thank you, and I hope you all are doing well.

Anyways, it's getting late, and it's time for me to head to bed. Night!

  18. Hey there Ninetails! Welcome to The Rebellion, glad to have you here :D

Knowing that you're new, I'll give you a beginner's run-down as best I can  :rapture:

Fist off, you might want to click on this little button here: gallery_22030_2178_5254.png

This will let you get notifications as to when people respond to this topic. The little thing of gray heads to the right of that marks how many people are also following this topic. There will be a button like this for (as far as I know) every topic someone makes (if there's some exception to the rule, I haven't run across it yet). You can follow others topics as well, to keep up to date with them.

As for notifications, you'll get them here:

    gallery_22030_2178_252.png

(It'll have your profile to the right, of course)

When following a topic, if someone replies to it, it'll alert you here, showing you the total number of updates to topics you follow that have been made. Clicking on it will bring down a list, and if there are more updates than it can list in that small box, just click on "View all notifications" to see everything that's gone on (along with any previous ones you've already viewed).

The box to the right of notifications is the Messenger:

    gallery_22030_2178_10669.png

Here, it'll notify you of any Private Messages (usually just referred to as PM's). You can send others private messages by clicking on their name or icon, going to their page, and clicking on this button to the right of the page:

    gallery_22030_2178_146.png

(You can also add them as a friend, by clicking on the button to the left)

    Now, onto the fun stuff!

By hovering over the "4 WEEK CHALLENGE" button at the top, a little drop down menu will appear:

    gallery_22030_2178_31091.png

The top three links here will help you figure out where to begin. Clicking on "Challenge Forums" will bring you to the current Four Week Challenge, where you can make a topic for yourself in one of the many Guilds. But right now as a new Rebel, you might want to start out in the "Rebel" Guild, until you get your sea legs.

And by clicking on the "4 WEEK CHALLENGE" button itself, you can get to all previous challenges done here, a "Rules/F.A.Q." page, plus "PVP Challenges".

And for some extra help, here are some links to past NF articles (you've probably already read them, but it never hurts to link  :pride:):

And because I really like this one:

I hope I've been able to be of some help  :rapture:
