  1. Update! Joined a yoga studio on monday and got in my first class. Felt great to be back on the mat! Doing the intermediate level classes monday and thursday. Then I'm thinking some of the doyouyoga.com 30 day challenge sets on the weekend. Save a bit of money. As for food I've been doing great. Working on a 5 meal kind of roster. going for 20g of protien at breakfast lunch and two snacks, with 30g+ at dinner. The very basic, minimum food requirements is: Breakfast: 3 eggs / 100g nutrigrain with milk Lunch: 80g tuna / 100g of steak Snack: Protien shake with milk / 100g of almonds Dinner: 150g beef / chicken / fiah So i'm aiming to follow this kind of diet and then start to come up with some interesting recipes and stuff as the challenge goes on! No late nights or drinking either. But the winter season hasn't quite started and there's a boys road trip coming up. So I'm charging up my willpower!
  2. Yeah it's an awesome sport! I was born in Western Australia, no mountain or snow, so I only started in 2011, but now I'm teaching snowboarding which is lots of fun and gives me lots of time to ride! It's an easy career to get into if you're interested! Depends on the mountain really, where i worked in NZ did staff meals, which were always reasonable food. Vegies, meat and rice usually, so it wasn't too bad! I usually try to take my own food up anyway, cheaper and healthier! Where do you usually ride?
  3. Hi Deborah, Congratulations on Day one, keep it up! And enjoy skyrim, I love that game but I'm back into Oblivion atm haha! You have an awesome profile picture too btw!
  4. Great start to the challenge, keep it up! What kind of races are you doing in 2015?
  5. Sounds like a pretty good start! The first week will always be the toughest, push through! And great job on saying no to the soda. It might be free, but it makes you pay in other ways!
  6. Hi Madambones! That's a bummer about your collar bone, are you interested in getting back on the bike? I hurt my back a couple of years ago downhilling and spent ages away from the sport, but it felt so great to beat my fear and get back into it! Your quest and goals sound great and I'm looking forward to watching your progress! Luke.
  7. Hi Amalie, You seem really determined! All the best with your challenge. Sleep is something that I struggle with as well, for some reason I find crime novels help me fall asleep. Sci Fi and Fantasy is too interesting and keeps me up reading too late, but I can totally fall asleep to a crime novel! Looking forward to seeing your progress!
  8. Hi Elisabelle, you have an awesome name! Good luck with your challenge, I'm trying to get into yoga as well! As for the rewards I'm not too sure. I guess if you complete your challenge as well as you would like you get to treat yourself! Weekend away doing yoga on the beach or a nice meal at a vegetarian restaurant, healthy meal of course!
  9. Good luck Alice! This is my second go at the first challenge as well. I'll be cheering for you.
  10. Ryke solemnly vowed to himself that this would be a turning point in his life, that he would cast aside his previous lifestyle, as he slowly ascended the marble steps into the Jedi Academy. The time is now, he was ready. As he entered the temple he was approached by a little green alien who spoke in a strange voice. “The Jedi, wish to join do you?†To which Ryke replied “Uhh yeah, this IS the Jedi Academy right?†“Hmmph, no respect this one has.†The green man muttered as he passed Ryke a handful of papers. “At the dotted line, sign you must. Then take it to the Induction room.†Ryke looked down at the forms: Standard galactic waiver form, The Jedi Temple can not be held accountable for any harm that befalls on the applicant during the training process. Blah blah blah, guardians of peace… Serve others…. Knowledge and training, ‘Doesn’t sound so bad’ thought Ryke as he scribbled down his signature. Walking into the Induction room Ryke was met with the sight of many other would be Jedi, receiving their introduction into the life of a Jedi. Let’s get it done. MAIN QUEST After some serious injuries I have finally come to the realisation that this body has to last me another 70+ (hopefully) years. So now I’m going to look after it. My main quest is a simple one: Forge a healthier lifestyle for myself. Take more of an active role in looking after my body, rather than being a spectator and ‘going with the flow’. QUEST 1: Jedi Food I’m quite a good eater as it is, getting my fruit and vegies every day. But as it comes into Snowboard Season, I want to start ensuring that I get the protein my body need to recover from all the physical trauma I am going to drag it through this winter. I’m aiming for 110grams/day, from a quick google this seems like a good amount for a 66kg active man. A: Reach my required intake %95 of the time – (miss 2 days out of 42) B: 90% of the time – (miss 4 days) C: 85% of the time – (miss 6 days) QUEST 2: Preparing my body for Jedi Training. I have dabbled in Yoga in the past and I always feel better for it. But I always flake out of it for one reason or another. So this time I’m doing it for real! I will join a club and purchasing a membership of some kind and commit to it. I aim to do Yoga 3 times a week after work and stretching at home 3 times a week in the mornings. A: 3 Times a week. No excuses! B: 3 Times a week. With 1 exception. C: 3 Times a week. With 2 exceptions. QUEST 3: Abstinence (Let’s not get crazy though) Just as the Jedi lead a life of abstinence, I will abstain from excessive Alcohol and partying. Working in the snowboarding industry leads to a lot of temptation in this department. I won’t be removing myself from the scene, instead limiting my exposure. Have 2 Beers max, leave by 1am at the latest. A: I exhibit Jedi-like willpower! No exceptions. B: 2 slip ups on either of the criteria. (Out past 1am, less than 2 beers is 1 slip up, past 1 am, more than 2 beers is 2.) C: 4 slip ups. LIFE QUEST: Get it all written down. Leave my Diary on my pillow and write in it every night. What I write is not so important as forging the habit to write. I will also ensure that I take body measurements and photos at the beginning of the challenge to keep record of how my body changes over the 6 weeks and so I have something to look back on as my Jedi training progresses. Pass or Fail.
  11. Thanks for the well wishes guys. And Chelkie, Alaska is the worlds Mecca for backcountry snowboarding, so just being able to say that you have ridden Alaska is a huge achievement and something that is definitely on my epic quest! Any Snowboarding is better than none!
  12. So, first challenge! The main goal for this challenge, is to begin building habits (incase the title wasn't obvious enough), making a foundation to really change my lifestyle in the long term! What the devil is in: (details) 1 - Start working out 3 times per week, and recording those workouts. I will be starting with the beginner body weight circuit possibly moving to the advanced body weight, depending on how I go with the beginner. (I have very little experience with this kind of stuff so i'm not sure how i will go) The main aim is to start building the habits and preparing myself for strength training, so whilst increasing my strength will be a happy by-product it is not the main goal at the moment. 2 - Begin a flexibility and stretching routine. So because I am snowboarding 6 times a week, it is important to keep my muscles flexible to prevent injuries when I SLAM. So the aim is to get in the habit of stretching as often as possible! I will incorporate a short pre-riding dynamic stretch sesh into my day before snowboarding and before working out to warm up and get my body ready. Then I will also do an afternoon stretch 4 times a week, probably in front of the TV, to try and loosen up some of my tighter muscle groups, (hip and thigh muscles). 3 - Start keeping a shopping list, to plan meals. Start to switch the "Snack" part of my diet towards Paleo. Diet is probably going to be the hardest part for me to change. So the aim of this goal, is to get in the Habit of planning out what I will be eating this week and doing one big weekly shop, setting myself up to succeed! If there's food in the house that is easy to make it will stop me from heading for take out. I am also going to start to try and switch to Paleo snacks, nuts, fruit, etc. So cutting out as much chocolate, biscuits and cakes as possible. And my life goal is to put at least 5 hours a week into learning Spanish. I have an Epic South America trip coming up, preparing to cross off some things from my Epic Life Quest, and I think speaking Spanish will make it that much more enjoyable. Plus speaking another language is on the list. I have already been learning spanish for a while, I just need to keep committing to that, especially with the snow season starting up again! So that is my current challenge. I will be posting weekly to let the world know how I'm doing which will keep me accountable! Some goals may be adjusted about mid challenge, as I will be moving to Canada and to completely different living conditions. But hopefully I should be able to carry them through without having to change much.
  13. Hello Nerd Fitness Forums! Introducing myself on an internet forum is a pretty big step for me, i've stalked NF for a while now and while its a bit outside my comfort zone, I want to jump into the community and get ready for the upcoming challenge. So why the hell not! My name is Luke, and I'm a 22 yr old Aussie who is an avid gamer, a retired Mechanical Engineer who now teaches snowboarding for a very meager living, with the upside of a great lifestyle. At 6ft and 65kg, snowboarding every day I am quite fit but if anything I am a little bit underweight, The main reason I have joined is to help correct many bad physical and lifestyle habits that I have made for myself over my university and office work years. The big two being my bad posture and constant pains associated with that and my terrible eating habits! So my long term goals are: Have correct relaxed posture, removing/minimizing the pain i get in my neck, shoulders and lower back. Slowly transition myself onto the Paleo diet, resulting in better energy levels, feeling better in the mornings and avoiding sickness. I'm looking forward to breaking them down into smaller achievable goals in the up coming challenge! And reading all about your own challenge. Yeah, yours. Thanks!
