  1. I mentioned that the original goal for my weightloss was to lose enough weight to be under the limit for tandem skydiving for my anniversary. I weighed 230 pounds in the beginning of June, and the skydiving reservation was a month away. I had to make it under 225 to be able to jump. As you can see, I made it. The method I used was calorie-counting, plain and simple. I followed the advice of my wife (a medical doctor), and she told me that calories in < calories out is the only way to lose weight. It made sense, and it worked phenomenally. Since then, I've gotten down to 210 pounds, and I'm halfway to my goal of 190! It's so easy, and my favorite workout is the NerdFitness beginner's circuits. I've been building on them, and I'm close to doing the advanced circuits. This site is a lot of fun, and I look forward to buying the Rebel Fitness Guide! I should post more often, but I'm a lurker by nature. Perhaps I can contribute more soon...
  2. Heya Dantes, I understand what you're talking about with the excel madness. I just graduated a couple of years ago with my ChemE degree, and it doesn't let up in industry. The formulas get pretty wild! I have a question, though. Aren't carbs and protein more like 4 calories per gram instead of 1? I can't see your spreadsheets since photobucket images are blocked at work, so I might be missing something. Also, which of the 30-30-40 split is the '40'?
  3. If anyone's still looking for a good calorie in - calorie out app for the Android, I would recommend Calorie Counter. I've used it for a week now, and it's free. It syncs with a free acount on the FatSecret website. Some of the features include: -Directory of the nutritional information of a multitude of foods, including restaurant foods -You can use your camera as a barcode scanner for the foods you will eat that day -You can enter the exercise you did for the day -The app (and website) show how much of a calorie deficit or surplus you have for the day -It will also track your weight and show you how close you are to sticking with your plan I've always had a tough time motivating myself to add up the calories, but this makes it really easy. Also, I have an Android app called RunKeeper, which is also free. I haven't used it too much yet, but it also syncs up to the parent website, and you can see where you ran on a map. You can even see how fast you were running on a certain part of the trail. You can set it for a variety of different activities like running or biking or even cross-country skiing, so it can give an estimate of how many calories you burned. I like free apps like this.
  4. Thanks for the welcome! I'm pretty pumped about skydiving, but since I've never done anything like that before, I'm not sure how I'll do. I'll try to post some pictures if/when I get some. If you hear about an awful skydiving accident at the end of June near Cedar Rapids, IA, and I stop posting - that was probably us.
  5. Greetings. I found this site because of my Android phone. For those who don't know, there's an app called Calorie Counter, and it is associated with a website called FatSecret. When I was browsing through their message boards, this site was mentioned in a post somewhere, and I thought I'd take a peek. I think that this proves that - on the internet - if you look hard enough, you'll find exactly what you need. I am a Nerd (or Geek or whatever), and I really got into gaming and nerd culture while in college. Unfortunately, that tends to lead to sedentary behavior, and I got my freshman 15... every year. I was 50 pounds heavier after leaving college than I was when I started. I've maintained this weight ever since then, and now I'm 30. I want to take my wife skydiving for our anniversary, and it looks like I need to lose about 5 pounds in one month for me to stay under the maximum weight limit. Since I'm going to go that far, I might as well go all the way to losing 50 pounds. This looks like a friendly community, and the website is fantastic. So many good articles, written with enthusiasm. I could very well find a home here. Let's see how this goes!
