  1. Thanks for the support Max. I've just started Herman Wouk's Don't Stop the Carnival, and I am looking to crack Mike Huckabee's Do the Right Thing. Two totally different parts of my brain required for reading those two books, but I think that's a good thing.
  2. Johnny, I know how you feel relative to your bike ride. I've got a single speed beach cruiser and it is tough to pump that thing around. I went for a 4.5 mile ride this past weekend, and my legs were like jello afterward. Hadn't been on the bike in about 10 months, probably should have started off a little slower. Keep getting back at it though. Every minute you're moving as opposed to sitting on your butt is a good minute!
  3. You can do this Johnny! 1 day at a time. I started my weight loss battle in April and I too have a over a 100 pounds I would like to lose. I've been fighting the fat game for ever and have gone up and down a few times, usually within 30 lbs. or so. Today I'm down 42 lbs. since my start in April and I finally have some confidence that I can do this. For me, encouragement from others has been a huge factor in my success to date. I think you have some great goals for this challenge that will help you move towards a healthier you!! Good luck, keep us updated as you move forward.
  4. I'm in! Been fighting the battle of the bulge forever. My main goal for this challenge is losing another 20 lbs. I've been a disciple of the Ideal Protein protocol for the last seven weeks and I've seen great results so far. I have quite a ways to go and I am looking to Nerd Fitness to continue the momentum and help me focus on lifestyle changes that will stay with me far after I reached my goal weight. Thanks for starting up this group Johnny!! Let's make this six weeks to be proud of!!
  5. Not sure I should admit this, but I first stumbled across the Rebellion 2 years ago. I liked what I was reading and I read a lot to try to improve my base of knowledge in all things nerd and fitness. Unfortunately, when it came time to convert the knowledge to action, I baulked and did nothing. I fell away from the Rebellion and hid in a world of laziness, junk food, and depression. I think my underlying issues at the time were a fear of failure and a lack of confidence in myself. Back in April something snapped, and I decided it was time to get serious. I knew, for me, the initial focus needed to be diet, to be followed later by exercise. I've been almost insane about my diet since then, and seven weeks later I'm down 42 lbs. I have now begun to develop the confidence I need to continue to level up my life. I think this six week challenge is just what I need to continue to grow. Being my first real challenge, I'm making sure my goals are attainable. The worst thing I could do is create some impractical goals, simply to be upset that they were not reached. All that being said, here is where I'm at: Fitness Goals: 1) Put at least 30 miles on my bike (single speed cruiser). 2) Do deep breathing meditation 3 days/week. 3) Lose an additional 20 lbs. Level Up Goal: 4) Read 2 books. I have some additional things I hope the accomplish, but these are my set goals, and the rest will be gravy....errr...maybe not gravy Best of luck to my fellow Adventurers looking to find their path!!
  6. Does posting on other people's challenge threads count as "hanging out with new friends"? haha...good luck with your goals!!
  7. Ebm, thank you for your support. I'm using My Fitness Pal for tracking calories. It recommends 1650 calories as my daily intake. I'm hoping to be closer to 1400, maybe a little higher, depending on my workouts. Foolish, I'm going to shoot for three days of strength training (Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Press, Overhead Press, Inverted Rows, etc.) Hopefully, I can also get in at least 1 day a week of walking or biking. Thank you for the recommendation on the book.
  8. This is my first six week challenge so bare with me if my goals are not perfectly SMART. Fitness Goals: 1) Lose 15 lbs. Shouldn't be too hard, I'm starting at a pretty high number 2) Exercise 3 times a week, no excuses! 3) Start eating more Paleo and counting calories, including preparing/eating a Paleo Thanksgiving dinner. Life Goals: (Yes I'm selecting two goals...it's my challenge and I'll do what I want to.) 1) Select and read a book on leadership. (Any suggestions?) 2) Pray every day.
  9. It's official, I'm in for the 11:00 wave plus camping after. Can't wait!! Now...time to start training...
  10. That's bad ass Spezzy! Have a great time and good luck!
  11. Thank you for posting this! I've been needing to find something to kick me in the butt and get me moving again. This event is that thing. 8 months to get myself in zombie shape...sweet. This combined with the release of the Rebel Running Guide, is just the recipe that I've needed. I'll be signing up for both asap.
  12. I was a steady treadmill guy, because "that's what you do to lose weight." Then I stumbled across nerd fitness, which has opened my eyes to strength training. I'm now starting a steady diet of body weight circuit training, and intend to progress to free weights in the next month or so. I also do some outdoor activities, bike (more of a pleasure pace than exercise), and kayak. As for diet. I'm using the my fitness pal app on my smart phone to track calories. Before looking into paleo, I figured as long as a stayed at or below my max calories for the day, I was good, regardless of what I put in my mouth. Now I'm starting to look for ways to make those calories count, by looking to be more paleo in my choices.
  13. I've been in a rut for the last several years and I've finally made the decision to start becoming a better version of me. I stumbled across Nerd Fitness while checking out the art of manliness blog, and I'm happy to be here with other like minded folks. Can't wait to start meeting everyone. As for me...33 year old from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Definitely overweight, but down 35 lbs from where I was 5 months ago. I have had some success with counting calories and hitting the treadmill, but it's getting boring. I've been interested by what I've read on here and related sites relative to the Paleo/Primal diet and strength training. My major goal is to drop an additional 90 lbs. I shoot for 10 lbs. per month, which is achievable right now, but I recognize, it will likely become more difficult as I get smaller. I'm looking forward to getting the motivation/tips I'll need from everyone here to keep moving forward.
