  1. I'm captainstarfis. It was going to be captain starfish but not enough letters were allowed.
  2. Checking in for last week. 2/2 at the climbing gym. Picked out two new projects another 5.10a and a 5.8 that's overhung to work on some technique there. 9 miles of walking, no weekend hike due to a busier than usual weekend. We'll make it up this weekend though, currently we have 8ish miles of hiking planned. We're going to cross two items off of our "before we leave Minnesota" list: Hike to the highest point in the state, Eagle mountain (hill), 2300 feet of elevation. it's a 7 mile round trip, pretty secluded hike. and finish the first hike we ever went on (the 2 mile out and back to Devil's Kettle Falls). We need to find a can of RC cola to bring along for the story, do they still sell RC cola? 1/2 on yoga 4/5 on work food and snacks
  3. Wow, most wanted. awesome. I shall endeavor to climb all the things. Thanks guys
  4. Gah, now it's Friday and I've completely forgotten to check in. Life, you know. So last week, I totally met my goal and scent my 5.10a. All in all it was a really good gym session, lots of happy brain chemicals. Now I need to find a new gym project. Also did 11 miles of hiking/walking. We shaved 10 minutes of our 6 mile loop. We're not going to match that time when we go tomorrow since the dog's arthritis seems to be bothering her and we'll need to take it easy on the old girl 4/5 for work food/snacks (seems to be my magic number) no yoga So far this week's been good, still looking for my next gym project, I'll find something 1/2 on yoga
  5. Scent a 5.10a at the gym last night! I'll do a real check in on Monday, but I had to share
  6. Saturday's hike was awesome. We did 6 miles in 2 hours (I'm pretty sure the dog thinks we're trying to kill her, she's taken to laying down immediately when we stop for hydration breaks). Climbing on Sunday was okay, not my best session, but okay. Top-rope gym climbing. SO last week I got in 9 miles of walking/hiking. went 1/2 on climbing and 0/2 on Yoga 3.5/5 for snacks and lunches at work.
  7. So this week has been less than awesome. I managed to catch one of those terrible summer head/chest colds, so I missed Yoga on Monday, Climbing on Tuesday and Hiking on Thursday I did manage 3 miles of walking on Wednesday. I've got six miles of hiking planned for tomorrow and intend to go climbing on Sunday. I was trying to explain that awesome addicting feeling to someone who doesn't climb and the best I could come up with is "every time you do something it's something you didn't think you could do. Every time I tie myself in I know I'm going to try something that I don't know if I can do, and that feeling when I've done that thing that I didn't know I could do before I did it, that's why I climb"
  8. okay so week one, a half a week late. No internet access this weekend, best thing about summer 1/2 for Yoga last week 1/2 at the climbing gym, got two handhold higher on the 5.10a I'm working on, also had a victory on a 5.8 I had given up on. The happy brain chemical cocktail from completing that served to remind me why I climb. walking 1.5 + 2 + 5 +2.5 = 11 4/5 for lunch and snacks to work.
  9. I tend to ask myself "What's the worst thing that can happen?" There's a big difference between "I'll fall, and that's what the rope is for" and "I'll fall, and my protection will fail, and I'll hit the ground"
  10. For what it's worth there is a version of "Hallelujah" on the soundtrack for one of the Shrek movies. It comes up on my Pandora from time to time.
  11. First day of the challenge, whoo. Yoga class this morning so that's one of two for this week. 1.77 miles of waling at lunch per runtastic, I'm not sure how accurate it is so I'm going to round down to 1.5 miles. Brought my lunch, snacks, and coffee to work today.
  12. So I'm leaving for a week long vacation in Rocky Mountain National Park on 9/12/14. This conveniently coincides with the end of this challenge. Also the wife and I are, apparently, actually the sort of crazy people that need a training plan for vacation. Scend a 5.10aI'm a pretty solid 5.8/5.9 climber right now (in the gym, I've only had the chance to climb real rocks a couple of times)Go to the climbing gym x2 per weekAverage 10 miles per week of walking/hikingI can fit a 3 mile flat walk in on my lunch break At least one 5-6 mile training hike on hills per weekYoga x2 per weekThis really relates to the climbing goal but also I like yogaGet my shit together life goalBring food to work, snacks and lunch, everyday. Lunch meetings are a part of my job but I can do a better job of managing my food and not eating junk. Also it's fresh veggie season so I should take advantage of that
  13. I really like yoga for flexibility training. You can find a class in your area or check out youtube, there is no shortage of videos on youtube. If you can find the progression the assassins used two challenges back for pistol squats the balance and flexibility exercises there are actually pretty helpful for climbing. Remember to work on your balance too
  14. Bird shelter last night, lots of squatting and a fair amount of dodging. Skipped this morning, my left knee is bothering me. It's bothered me periodically since puberty, one of those things I wish I had a good story about (i.e., I hurt my knee climbing a tree to rescue my best friends cat when I was 14) or at least a story about, but it's more like, I have a janky knee, it just is that way, if I leave it alone it'll feel better in a day or so.
  15. Playground workout this morning. Hit my head doing negative pull ups, not hard, just hit my head. It was a bit chilly, but still nicer outside than inside. I really like working out outdoors, it's nice, and quiet in the early morning. I can almost do an unassisted pistol on my right leg, my left leg doesn't seem to be progressing nearly as fast. I've noticed the side dominance in other things to, I can grip things with my right hand that I can't with my left hand and the DOMS is usually worse on the right side after I try something new (for example the first time I tried bouldering, I had DOMs in my right shoulder but not in my left) I'm not sure if this is something I should actively worry about, or just something I need to be aware of so that I can focus on working the left side to bring it up to speed.
  16. I feel like they should put commas in the resource value so that it's easier for my brain to turn it into a real number
  17. Cardio this morning. Also a "This American Life" podcast about how a certain percentage of people around you are high all of the time. I'm going to look at my co-workers a whole new way now.
  18. Busy weekend. 4miles of hiking Saturday morning. Would have been 6 but a thunderstorm was threatening when we approached our final bailout point. Climbing Sunday morning, the gym was basically deserted which was nice. Then a stroll with the dog to decide what else to do with the day. Then gardening, there are flowers in all of my planters now, instead of just dirt :-) We did Nerstrand on snowshoes last winter, then again hiking a few weeks ago. I'm excited to go back again and again, it's easier without the snowshoes.
  19. Had fun last night, there was a ~3 mile hike, and free climbing, even if there was only one route and it wasn't very difficult it was still fun. Also learns about the magic that is liquid chalk, that shit is amazeballs. Didn't do cardio or the playground this morning. Was up to late last night and didn't have time before work. I'm going to fit a walk in at lunchtime. I probably won't check in here tomorrow, I've got a full day planned in a limited data area. 4-6 miles of reasonably intense hiking at Whitewater State Park, then Mother's day dinner.
  20. I also enjoy warring. Is there anyone who doesn't want to war? If we all want to war but there is enough interest to have two clans perhaps we could split in some sort of random way (we're all nerds here, I can't be the only person who has used a random number generator to make a decision)
  21. I think you just won this section of the internet.
  22. So yesterday was Wednesday. Wednesday nights I volunteer with parrots. It's exhausting, and rewarding, and the best analogy I have for what I do is that it's like managing a room of 30 toddlers, most of whom are in desperate need of a nap, all of whom are on a serious sugar high. Oh, and they have a multi tool on their face. Into work early again this morning so that I can get out early and head down to Ladies' night at a local outfitters. I should probably do cardio tomorrow morning, but I'm probably going to go to the playground instead.
  23. Restaurant meals can be particularly challenging. Good for you to recognize your weak point.
  24. It didn't Rain! Playground workout this morning. Several odd looks from people walking their dogs, oh well, it's not like I"m stopping children from using the playground equipment at 7 in the morning. Afton is beautiful. Thank you for the tip about the orienteering course, I'll look into that. We did a 5 mile loop out there last night. It's lovely on a weeknight when no one else is out there, the bluebirds are back and I think the turkeys are feeling amorous, or at least vocal.
