  1. You can use cocoa powder if you don't want to use a food processor, and instead add a bit more honey or a banana to even out the consistency. When you don't blend the zucchini it's still tasty but more chewy/stringy and you can definitely tell there's veg in there. I suggest using beet as a base if you want a richer, more wholesome flavor to the brownies. Beets also have a natural sweetness and juiciness, so you can use less honey and almond butter.
  2. Is that a bird? Is that a plane? NO! It's Firstmatenora!! Back from the evil realm known only as the Dissertation of Doom, she comes having fought her way valiantly through three months of horror. She was stuck in a wasteland of writing and no exercise for months, having nearly given up hope of finishing, and lost track of almost all of her health goals. Yet, when the deadline came, she was prepared and turned in her dissertation, and boy did she kick its butt! Though she did not come away unscathed, she stands ready to get back to the basics and build again. Her body and m
  3. Uhhhh these are so good: Paleo Girl Scout Thin Mints Also good ideas for desserts: Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp Danish Summer Pie And my go-to brownie recipe
  4. Quick update this week. BWW: A Running: A Diet: A Dissertation: D Having a lot of problems writing/reading, but I should be getting back on the horse anytime now. I have a work shadow on Friday, which should prove interesting if nothing else, and an interview on the 7th. I'll be out of town the 3rd through 5th, but I hope to bring my running shoes with me, so I keep up with my workouts. Also, I bought edible bugs off of the internet. Sometimes when I get stressed out I don't make the smartest purchases.
  5. Just popping in to say that, despite slow going, I've done more reading today and finished a couple more job applications. I'm getting up wicked early tomorrow to start the process all over again. I also went for my run. That was less successful. I felt exhausted and couldn't run the full time. I think I need to be getting more sleep, and I've been eating too many damn nuts. I need to stop keeping them stashed all around the house like a frickin' squirrel. Oh and I made things: First, my homemade mango/peach/ginger jam. Then the sunbutter muffins I made stuffed with aforementioned jam. I
  6. I ran my first 5K yesterday and finished in 30 minutes!! I would have been faster but I didnt hydrate enough and got side cramps for a bit. I'm looking forward to getting to a 10k by the end of the summer!
  7. I'm alive! Alliiiiiivvvveeee! So, this is an update for the last two weeks I guess. Whoops. I've been pretty good about sticking to my eating and exercises. I've even started the 5k to 10k bridge. I think I let things spiral because of stress regarding my dissertation and a lack of a cohesive daily schedule. My first deadline is Monday and I have yet to write a word, but I'm confident I'll have something for my advisor. I spent the past week applying for jobs, and I've passed a few of the initial exams for some training programs, but I'll have to wait and see how that progresses. As with
  8. So, I went a little underground, and neglected to update anything, but I have been continuing to work on my goals, despite a massive mishap with a mandolin slicer yesterday. ): I'll give a real update tonight!
  9. A quick, paleo and healthy (!!!) dessert is a banana chopped up, frozen, then blended with some almond/cow/coconut milk (just a splash) and then whatever flavorings you'd like. I usually do some vanilla extract and mix in some chocolate chips. I have to say, I'm an avid paleo baker, and yes they do have more calories. However, they also have a lot more protein in general. I suggest these brownies if you need a good dose of chocolate. As with everything, moderation is key. I don't eat huge portions of the desserts I make, but rather freeze them and eat them slowly over time. It's a nice treat
  10. I got a clearsky app that's just called 10k Runner, but I might look at the Zombies Run one. This one seems pretty routine. It's meant to pick up where 5k training leaves off.
  11. I listen to audio books as I run, and try to pick ones with a lot action or a fast moving plot. That way your mind focuses in on the story, rather than the run. I just finished listening to "The Initiate Brother" and started "Red Rising," but I strongly recommend the Newsflesh Trilogy for a zombie run and zombie book duo experience. Plus they have really good narrators for the series. On a personal victory, I just ran 6km, the second run in a row that I've beat out 6km. The one the day before yesterday was 6.18km. I'll be done with the normal c25k app tomorrow and then I'm going to start th
  12. DAY THREE: The Flight, the Run, the Lack of Sleep Not going to lie. Today was pretty crummy on two out of three goals. BUT!!! I did super duper awesome on one of them! I'm going to take the day as not a total loss then. Plus, in my defense I haven't slept since Monday night. The Food: Flights were hellish. At one point I thought I was going to fall asleep in the Cairo airport waiting for the plane to board. The only thing that kept me awake was one simple thought: I CANNOT get stuck in Egypt. I needed to get back home to my cats, damnit. They depend on me! On the plane I groggily
  13. 1. Thanks! 2. It scares the bejesus out of me. 3. You do not question JLaw quotes. You just love them, and her, as the universe intended.
  14. I went and got fitted for running shoes today on my way back from the airport, since I was actually in a real city for once. Apparently the shoes I've been using have no ankle support which is why I sometimes get sore knees and arch pain!! I'm hoping this will also help my run time speed up. Don't underestimate the power of a good shoe!
