    Whole 30

Teros! It sounds like you are the Whole 30 Master? Where can I find delicious recipes for a Whole 30 journey? Or any info! I'm still in the research phase of this.

    Whole 30

Hello all! I am considering embarking on the Whole 30 train. I would like to plan things out as much as possible so I have no excuses if when I get busy. What are your favorite recipes/snacks/advice for this new journey? Thank you!
  4. Quest #1 Week 1: 983 ft http://app.strava.com/activities/284985417
  5. Greetings Rangers! At the end of May/beginning of June I will be attempting a ski summit of Mt. Rainier! Quest #1: Vertically Challenged A summit of Mt. Rainier demands over 9,000 vertical feet of ascent! Um, excuse me? Oh, I can do it in 2 days? Ok that could be doable. 4,600 feet from Paradise to Muir (overnight camp) and then 4,400 from Muir to the summit. This presents 2 challenges to me. Much more vert than I've done in a day all winter.Back to back big vert days.A general guideline for build up that fitness is below. This can either be on skis or hiking dirt (as it is spring here, both are an option) Week 1 - April 13 A - 2,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row B - 1,000 ft + 2 days in a row C - 1,000 ft or 2 days in a row Week 2 - April 20 A - 4,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row B - 2,000 ft + 2 days in a row C - 2,000 ft or 2 days in a row Week 3 - April 27 A - 4,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row with pack weight B - 2,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight C - 2,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight Week 4 - May 4 A - 6,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row with pack weight B - 4,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight C - 4,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight Week 5 - May 11 A - 8,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row with pack weight B - 6,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight C - 4,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight Week 6 - May 18 A - 10,000 ft + at least 2 days in a row with pack weight B - 8,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight C - 5,000 ft + 2 days in a row with pack weight Excellent! A plan to make it to the summit! Quest #2: The Sherpa But there's a catch. Not only do I have to drag my ass up the mountain, I get to drag all of my gear on my back as well! This means 40-50 lbs of extra pack weight to carry. I have integrated part of this above, but carrying a heavy pack for extended periods requires core and leg strength. To realize this goal I will be lifting with a focus on squats, deadlifts, cleans and other ab/core exercises. A - lift 3x per week B - lift 3x per week C - lift 1x per week Quest #3: Fuel Shortage Fuel is always a struggle for me. Preparing meals and planning always seems to fall by the wayside first. For this challenge, I'm starting small. A - All lunches from home but 1 per week. B - Only 2 cafeteria lunches per week. C - 3 cafeteria lunches per week. Bonus point: Healthy choice from cafeteria. Possibly a salad over a burger and tots.
  6. Oh, the many reasons excuses I have for falling off the solar sailer. But alas, those no longer matter. Time to get back on it! It is ski season here and I need to get my legs going. Here is my plan for this week! Dawn patrol at least once this week (This means get up at an ungodly hour and hike up a mountain to ski down before going into work). My excuse is my backcountry buddy is currently unemployed and don't want to bother her to wake up so early...BUT seriously, she's stoked to go ski as I would be so this is happening!30+ minutes on bike trainer to keep cardio up for touring and leg endurance going for endless pow turns all winter. [i did this last night ]1 day at climbing gym to keep strength through the winter. (BONUS: Good stability work as well)Out of 7 days in a week, I REALLY should be able to easily do all of these things each week. One week at a time...
  7. Well...I started off well making Most Wanted! Woo thank you SO MUCH for the nomination! Unfortunately, I started slacking after that...I seem to bounce around alot in what I want to do and am not doing a very good job at staying commited to my quests I also don't think it helped that my main quest was a week into the challenge...I'll do a better job at picking something to actually work towards rather than a week in. Main Quest: I ended up going just over 3 hours in my triathlon. (still blaming the wind!) Run 1x per week. Boo on running! And the tri team changed its running work out to a different location so I can't make it before work FBike 1x per week. Did this a few times. But definitely not once per week. C-Hike 1x per week. Only did this once I think. Always room for improvement, right? D- (probably closer to F+) Life Quest: Got a little better at waking up with my alarm. However, it's going to take some work to get my sleepy brain to not rationalize getting back into comfy bed. Might have to move my alarm to the bathroom...I'll give myself a C here. http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/49593-freddyfly-wants-to-be-athlete-extraordinaire/ Overall? D. Ready to do better!
  8. Oh man, I've been slacking on the updates...My apologies June 16 Week: I did bike and hike once but no running. The Tri team moved their running practices to a farther venue so I can't make it to work at a decent time if I go. And I don't have much motivation to run by myself. I did also go rock climbing this week as well! June 23 Week: Vacation! Went to Glacier National Park so I got lots of hiking in but no biking or running. June 30 Week: Mountain biked this week! But that's it... July 7 Week: Not over yet, but am trying to get everything back together after the holiday weekend and Glacier trip. Takes me awhile to get back into a groove, I guess. And it's HOT here. I miss winter! Life Quest: I moved my alarm away from my bed but my sleepy brain rationalizes getting back into bed until the alarm goes off again. I've gotten a little better but there is still a long way to go.
  9. AAHHHH!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! You are all too kind!
  10. Thank you! I'm going to try to keep the training going (although the track workout was cancelled this morning). I should be doing lots of hiking next week since I'll be on vacation in Glacier also!
  11. Monday Update! I successfully completed my Olympic Triathlon this weekend! However I did not go under 3 hours (groooaaannnn ) but my time was 3:07:18.4. So close. The bike was ridiculously windy and what was supposed to be downhill ended up being more work than the uphill so I shall blame the wind. Surprisingly, the run was not as bad as I thought as that is usually where I struggle the most. Here are my splits in case you are interested: Swim 23:32.8 (pace) 14:43 T1 1:42.5 Bike 1:35:46.2 (rate) 15.7mph T2 1:20.4 Run 1:04:56.3 (pace) 10:28/mi 3:07:18.4 I'm pretty damn proud of that. Oh, AND I took 3rd in my age group! W00T! As for my other goals for last week, I did mountain bike on Friday but no hiking/running (unless I can count the race). I did move my alarm far away from my bed but I seem to rationalize getting back into bed for various reasons...I'll try to make the run workout tomorrow morning!
  12. Thanks! I'll have to use that! Hmm yes I should try that. I did do this before but I don't think it was far enough away since my monkey arms could still reach it by just sitting up. (and promptly laying back down and falling asleep) Update for today: I have a water polo game tonight (not part of my goals), so will not be making any progress. However, I shall be moving my alarm clock away from my bed tonight!
  13. Hello all! This is my first challenge as an ASSASSIN! Wooooo! Just wanted to say hello and see if anyone has any general tips or any specific to my chosen challenge! (Still figuring out the site etc.)
  14. Sigh...Off to a bad start. Hit snooze until after I was supposed to be at the track workout. How can I break this terrible habit? I used to get up as soon as the alarm rang! Now I can turn it off in my sleep and not even notice.
  15. Ok that may be an overstatement...but really it would be awesome. Anyway, my main quest is actually for this weekend (can I do that?). Here it is: Main Quest: Under 3 hours in olympic distance triathlon on June 14. (if that is too soon, I'm planning on signing up for another in July or August as well). How? Run 1x per week. There is a team workout on Tuesday mornings at 6am that I'd like to get to every week. However, that has not happened yet this summer. Also refer to life quest.Bike 1x per week. Biking to work is separate and does not count as bike workout. Bike workout may be road or mountain as I have just discovered my love of mountain biking.Hike 1x per week. Refer to previous challenge "Freddyfly's Grand Quest". But why is there no swim goal? Well, swimming is my strongest leg and I REALLY need to work on the other 2 so swimming improvement does not count towards being athlete extraordinaire. Life Quest: Wake up with alarm. As in less snoozing and coming into work later than I'd like. This should help me get to that running workout on Tuesday mornings. Hopefully. I used to be SO GOOD at waking up with my alarm and I'm not sure how this happened. Any tips?
  16. Challenge summary: I ended up biking to work fairly often but more like once a week than twice. So I give myself a B on that one. As for the climbing goal I give myself a C since I went, just not 3 times a week. That goal was a bit lofty to begin with I think. And I get an F on the handstand challenge. I kinda got bored and don't really know why I tried to do it. BUT, I get an A on the life goal! Currently have $200 saved for 30tirement! I believe my next challenge will be triathlon based since I'm signed up for on on June 14th (even though I just realized that is during the first week of the challenge). I have signed up for one more in October but would like to have one more in July or August. Possibly at the end of the next 6 week challenge? I'm not really sure what guild that fits into, but Assasin sounds more like me. (Wants a bit of everything ) Thanks everyone for your support!
  17. Sometimes the places you don't really want to go/pick other places over turn out to be awesome!
  18. I only work 4 days a week (but 10 hours each day) so I tend to make use of my 3 day weekends quite frequently. Although usually for skiing during the winter. My only advice is try to find somewhere relatively close to home so to maximize the fun time! You don't want to spend all your time driving somewhere. I'm sure you already figured that out, but it really can make a difference! Sorry I have no advice for Jersey...I'm way out in Utah!
  19. Wow, I thought I updated this recently! Guess not! Sorry friends... I've been biking to work at least once a week but have made other commitments after work that doesn't leave much time to bike back and make. I did do a longer ride one week but a ski area is still open so I've still be skiing on the weekends Climbing has been harder to get to as well. I think 3 times a week may have been a bit lofty. I have a few friends that climb but it's hard to coordinate with them and I'm too afraid to just go up to people and ask them to belay me maybe that could be a goal for next time? Been going once a week here as well but missed last week. The handstand challenge...well, that I lost motivation to do. I could have paid for the e-book about it but thought about why I wanted to learn how to do them. I couldn't really think of a reason besides "it would be cool". I'm not sure if it would help me towards my goal of the Grand Teton either. (It would be awesome to handstand up there but I need to be able to get there first). Life Quest: Saved another $100 towards 30tirement! Also of note (possibly replace a long bike ride), I completed the swim leg in the St. George Half Ironman as a part of a relay on May 3rd! So not great but ok I guess...
  20. Week 2 update: Didn't bike to work this week as the weather had decided that winter is back. I did attempt to do a metric century on Saturday. Made it 50 miles but then bailed since I couldn't feel my hands or feet at all anymore. (It was raining the whole ride and then got windy. Brrrrrr). Getting my bike tuned (should have done this weeks ago.) this week so I probably wont be able to bike in 2 days. Here's my ride! http://app.strava.com/activities/134454598 Got my membership to the climbing gym, got my top rope belay cert, and climbed some 5.7 top rope routes and v0/v1 bouldering routes. Only made it twice instead of 3 times however. Made it a few days with the handstand challenge but then totally spaced it for the next few...back on it today!
  21. Week 1 update: Well not off to a good start...had some prior engagements that prevented me from biking to work, so failed that one. Didn't make it to the climbing gym either but am heading there after work today to get the membership! Starting handstand challenge today! But I did accomplish my life goal at least! (I can't figure out where to upload a screenshot of it. but I for sure did it! $100 closer to 30tirement!)
  22. Thanks guys! How do we post progress? Just reply to this thread? I didn't know about those threads (still learning the ropes (hah!)). Thanks for pointing me that way. Excited to start planning my 30tirement also
  23. GOOOOO RIIPPPPLLLEEEYYYY!!!!
  24. Hello fellow nerd fitness-ers! I'm excited to join my first challenge! As a retired competitive swimmer, I have had trouble finding motivation to work out since my retirement. I have recently discovered backcountry skiing and hope to broaden my skills to include ski mountaineering in the near future. A couple weeks ago I attended an Intro to Ski Mountaineering course on Mount Rainier in Washington and It. Was. HARD. I BARELY made it up to the camp we stayed in and I realized that I have lost pretty much all fitness since my days of swimming. Even though it was rough, I had a blast! Definitely want to do it more and improve my skills. Now comes my quest! Main Quest: Climb the Grand Teton (No, this will not happen in 6 weeks BUT plans are in the works for summer) Don't know which route I'll do but most likely one of these (source: SummitPost.com) To help me complete my main quest I will: Complete the 28 day handstand challengeSign up for a climbing gym membership and go at least 3 times a week.Bike to work at least twice a week + 1 longer ride per weekLife Quest: Save at least $100 per month towards 30tirement 30tirement: (noun) A mini retirement taken when a person's age is 30-39. A friend of mine recently quit her job to move back to Alaska. But first she went on a 30tirement and travelled for a few months. I have a few years to save up for this but would like to go on an epic 30tirement journey! Wish me luck!
