  1. I love pokemon! I can't afford a 3ds right now so X and Y will have to wait, but I recently found my old copy of Black 2 while unpacking from months ago when I moved across the country, and I'm falling in love with that particular version all over again. I love water-type pokemon; if I lived in the pokemon world I like to think I'd be a water-type gym leader My favorites are gyarados, starmie, vaporeon, and oshawott. I have a little plush oshawott that I carry around with me for good luck. Which is totally normal for a grown adult to do. Really. *whistles innocently*
  2. I realize this is a kind of old thread but I really enjoyed the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. It takes place in an Ancient Roman-type civilization and has a cool magic system, political intrigue, and believable, likable characters. What more could you want? Actually, I am reading Wheel of Time right now (only on book 3, so I'm gonna be awhile), and I initially started reading it because someone thought I might like it if I liked Codex Alera, so the inverse is probably true
  3. At first I pictured an actual wolf, which would be even more awesome.
  4. It has to do with pure calorie content rather than how "clean" or paleo the ingredients are, but getdrunknotfat.com is a good resource for people who want to enjoy the occasional drink without blowing their calorie budget. I like to stick with hard liquors like vodka and whiskey because of their comparatively low calorie content, but if I want to blow 300 calories on an Imperial stout once in awhile, then I just try and plan around it and try not to beat myself up too much.
  5. Hi everyone! I used to be fairly active on these forums a couple years ago and sort of stopped posting for awhile, but I was missing the conversation here and decided to come back. As I said in a past intro post, I'm a nerd, and I like fitness, so this seems like a good place for me. I've been away from the forums, but not away from fitness, and I really enjoy lifting and bouldering. I'm very active on Fitocracy under the same username as I have here. Looking forward to getting to know everyone again!
  6. I'm going as Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. I'll post pics when it's all together; I'm still in the process of crocheting my Gryffindor scarf
  7. That is amazing!! Congrats!! Best feeling ever, isn't it?
  8. I gained weight in college but I was pretty scrawny in high school so it wasn't really a big deal. It was AFTER college when I stopped walking to class everyday and lost my gym membership that I started packing on the undesirable pounds. I lost weight in grad school, however. So I guess the short answer is, it depends
  9. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I think the best thing to do is to tell kids to try to stand up for themselves if they are being bullied. Preferably by telling them off, using swear words if necessary, while avoiding physical violence if possible -- though, sometimes a good punch in the face is exactly what a bully needs to leave the poor nerd alone [[Disclaimer: I'm not advocating punching bullies in the face. Very hard.]]. I grew up having the "ignore them and they'll go away" mantra drilled into my head, and ignoring them did not make them go away, it made me an easy target, and I think that fuarked me up a lot more than the bullying itself did. However I also think it's important not to stoop to their level. Telling someone to fuck off is a lot different, and more positive, than committing the same sort of psychological terrorism that they commit against you. Just my $0.02.
  10. I feel the exact same way. Y u no live in Colorado so we could lift together? I've been having fun with dumbbells but I'd really like to graduate to actual barbell squats, but every time I venture to the area of the weight room where the squat racks are, I see all these huge muscular guys and I think "Oh ghawd, I don't belong here, I'm gonna make an ass of myself, run awaaaay!" I can do barbell deadlifts though because deads are nice and non-scary. They don't require a raaaaack *cowers* My gym does have the occasional girl-lifter but I've hardly ever seen one lifting more than 15lbs at the high end. My gym also has a girls-only weight room that has dumbbells up to 40 lbs, though most girls only use the 10-15-lb ones, and no barbells at all, which I think exacerbates the problem (the regular weight room has dumbbells up to 150 lbs and lots of barbells).
  11. I'm married, but I'm in a very male-centric career and have very male-centric hobbies so it would be silly not to be allowed to have male friends ... but that means that any guy I'm friends with is "friend-zoned" by default because I have no interest in being unfaithful to my husband. Some of my male friends are pretty hot, too, so if I were single or polygamous ... but I'm not, so the point is moot . The problem with "nice guys" is a lot of guys who claim to be nice guys, really aren't. I learned my lesson the hard way with a guy who was moping about with the "I'm a nice guy, nobody wants me" line, and so of course, I being young and naiive, went all "I will want you! <3 <3" and only then did he show his true colors as a douche.
  12. What do you mean marshmallows aren't Paleo, they're meat, aren't they? Celestial Seasonings True Blueberry tea makes me happy. So yummy...
  13. Agree with sloth-like on the importance of exercise (ironic username! lol). They say that diet is 80%-90% of it, but in my experience it's more like 50%-60% ... I think people tend to say it's a higher amount because too many people do tend to overestimate their physical activity and underestimate their calories, so it's really important to stress that diet IS important so that people don't just run on the elliptical for a half hour and think it entitles them to three donuts (I was guilty of this in the past /shameface). But exercise is a really huge part of it especially if you're after being fit and not just thin. Weight lifting is hugely beneficial if you have access to it, but bodyweight exercises and such are good too. I'm not sure what exercises are in the Rebel Fitness guide, but I've been following a slightly modified version of the Rebel Strength Guide and LOVE it, so I imagine the Fitness guide is good too. If you've been doing it for two weeks it's probably normal not to have seen dramatic results just yet, 'cause these things take time, but keep at it and keep your diet on track (which is the point of this thread, lol), and you'll get there. I'm going to second what Ryan said though and definitely recommend writing down every single thing you put in your mouth. There are a lot of good online applications to help with this; myfitnesspal is a really good one especially if you have a smart phone. Using MFP along with weight lifting has helped me a TON. Even when you think you're being healthy it can be surprising how many calories you eat in a day and don't even realize! A lot of people here will advocate paleo, too -- it's not for me, but I know a lot of people who've done really well on it, so it's worth looking into.
  14. My friends were just talking about this the other day ... the general consensus was, "Sticking a vodka-soaked tampon up your bum? Geebus that would hurt, plus you miss out on the best part of drinking, the deliciousness >>"
