  1. Last week all my workouts were AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible within a set amount of time) and so intense that the last thing I cared about was my numbers. I might have set a benchmark and bested it, but I have no certainties. There's stuff I need to change and I don't think it'll be ready for next challenge but it WILL be re-launched when it's done
  2. I just stood up from my seat and started clapping in front of my screen
  3. Don't get me wrong, I'm not abandoning Crossfit or the Rangers (the ambassador defecting? NEVER!). I love CF and will continue pursuing it, but for good or bad we're still stuck. Most of the students are still building up the physical condition for harder stuff, so no oly lifts or handstand walk training yet. It doesn't help that they still haven't been able to do the ranking challenge and seperate us into skill levels, so we end up doing the beginner training. So for starters, I want to do something more advanced, which I will work on my own since it'll take some time to do it in the box. Two, when we move up to harder stuff, I prefer flexibility/gymnastics to lifts. It's one of the reasons I got into CF, because it's not just lifting like traditional gyms. With all that said, I'll stick with CF and might pick up tricking as an extra (I've also started some home dance training, but that's another story) because Rangers do ALL THE THINGS! Funny thing about tricking too, it's a multiclass Assassin/Monk thing, so I'm still maintaining my Rangerly jack-of-all-trades style. I'll go there next Sunday, which is before the start of next challenge, to try it out and see if I stick with it. Maybe I'll put up my thread in the Rangers and have that as a side-activity. Might put it in the Assassins' thread, or even the Monks'. No matter where my thread ends up being next challenge, I'm still and always will be a at heart In other news, yesterday I spent plenty of noon time in committees, so more than enough tiny pastries were consumed (boo) but I skipped lunch to make up for it. Also had an interview for my Vampire live character, who's getting enthusiastic feedback from lots of people (including a charming red-haired interviewer). Hit the box last night, doing several double-unders as warmup, then a lot of running drills, pullups, finally doing a gamified WOD (NF everywhere!) where we had several exercises and a minute to do as many reps, then a minute of rest, then on to the next exercise. So much fun! Today I had episode 2 of hard-case in the city court and I managed to heroically push through. Right now I'm packing my bags for a weekend out of town to see the amazing master of everything that's smooth and cool, mr. Brant Bjork, on stage
  4. In it's death throes, it has spawned a multitude of future games however...
  5. Something tells me a bunch of games will be launched next challenge. Which, don't get me wrong, is awesome
  6. Willing to test his assumption, Bacon moves closer to the fire shooting out from one of the statues and stretches out a tiny arm to see if he feels the warmth and if he is protected from the flames. If that works, he won't wait for the others to return the vial, but instead take a deep breath and dash across the room to grab the glowing object, hoping this move will somehow deactivate the statues.

In a mix of excitement and panic, Bacon whips out the vial he filled with water from the fountain when they first entered the room and passes it around, hoping it'll be enough to do the trick.
  8. What Bronan said, basically. I think the only way to speed up conversations is to actually think a lot before posting and avoid asking useless questions. When playing around the table, you can ask whatever and get immediate answers so you don't mind much, but due to the nature of the medium here, limiting one's questions to the absolutely necessary can be detrimental to speeding up the game
  9. Same issue here. Also sought Balance but having the same experiences and questions. Learning doesn't stop at our first L1 challenge, it's an ongoing process and we've still learned about ourselves from this challenge. I'm also struggling to find a way for diet to not take up such a large part of my thinking and effort, looks like the answer probably lies in preparation. For next challenge, I think I just have to stick with less ambitious goals with more room for error, just something that can exist as I go about my life, instead of becoming the main focus of my existence for 6 weeks. Oh, and also need to keep it simple without overloading myself with threads to follow, accountability groups and PvPs. Because even when we start simple, down the road we see a lot of exciting things that we want to be part of. Just a few thoughts.
  10. I think the Heroes vs Villains PvP is a good example of that mechanic at work, people adding their effort into a team pool, then each week a team wins. I also like your idea of combining team accountability groups, then having those teams battling it out PvP style, as long as you have enough people to run all that, of course. There's plenty of themes, definitely, the question is how you translate challenges and workouts into "points" for a system that rewards effort, incorporates some randomness (like the items you mentioned), has a clear winner and a decent storyline to motivate people. From my side and the lessons learned from WarNerdhammer, few people knew the world and its history, but the idea of recruiting troops through various workouts and fighting other players' armies over pieces of territory drew in a crowd. Now that its first run is almost complete, we have basically identified a need to tweak some things, mainly balance the recruitment cost with unit abilities and their actual effectiveness, as well as simplify and quicken the combat mechanic and resolution. I'm counting it as a success. The theme (Warhammer) wasn't that important in the long run as the idea (a fitness-based strategy game) and the big issue was the game system/mechanic. My next project, to share some info, would probably be described as a quest-based one, set in a Cyberpunk world. Players are lieutenants of the resistance, they all want to help their rebellion but also compete against each other about who will be the most effective, earning their leaders' favour. The basic resource of the game is Influence, gained by lifting weight or doing bodyweight exercises, effectively allowing anyone to join. Points are calculated as reps*weight, so a few powerlifts can be as effective as several lighter ones (also considering to measure weight in kg instead of lbs to prevent the numbers from going crazy). As the game progresses, missions will be made available, not sure yet if that will be done every X amount of time or randomly whenever. Missions will have their story part and something they require the player to do, whether it's a certain workout, practicing music, painting, cleaning etc. The idea is to make workout, diet and life quests available, allowing each player to pick what fits their taste and goals. By completing those, they earn victory points, which ultimately decide the winner. That's the basic idea, although I'm complicating it a bit. Some of you probably wondered what Influence is gained for. Well, there's a growing list of 30+ rebels and mercenaries, each with their own unique attributes. To perform every mission, players need to put together a team that will protect them, do the hacking etc. To enforce that, missions have specific team requirements. Therefore, players spend Influence to inspire team members to join them for that mission. This makes sure that even if someone keeps picking non-fitness goals, they'll still have to do some workouts at least to gain back the Influence they spent. It also introduces a certain strategic element to the game, especially since rebels/mercenaries are exclusive, can be active on one mission at a time and are only available for hire once that mission is finished. Do players work out just enough to put their crew together or do they pile up points to spend in case they need them in the future? Do they want to spend extra points to hire a powerful rebel/mercenary just so they'll be made unavailable for other players? If they need just a little extra to meet the mission's team requirements but all cheap recruits are busy, do they spend more for a more advanced recruit or wait and hope? That's the basic idea, open to judgement, questions and comments. Also, if anyone has similar ideas, feel free to post them
  11. There's a great site called roll20.net that I advise you to check out, especially if you want to play and can't find others in your area. It's a free online platform for playing RPGs, that is also compatible with Skype and Google Hangouts. What's best about it, you can meet other players from around the world, either to play in something you've created or join in one of their games, and it supports virtually every RPG in existence.
  12. Of course. I forgot to mention it, but regardless of my trip, since it's the end of the challenge, the deadline is moved to Sunday night. Also, I've started a thread to bring together people interested in future ideas such as this PvP. Feel free to check it out and spread the word.
  13. After running into too many wonderful fitness gamifications, such as the Mario Kart Bodyweight League, the Pushup Quidditch and several others, I took a shot and created the ambitious Warhammer PvP. Running for almost a challenge, it spawned a discussion in order to improve the imperfections noticed, which evolved into a brainstorm of game ideas and many people working on their own mini-games. It has become obvious that there is a need for a place where we can toss ideas around, help each other, perhaps launch trial versions and recruit people for testing, hence this thread. Do you have a game in mind and need help? Some feedback on your first draft? Perhaps somebody's help to work on it together? Want some inspiration on what to make? Something you'd like to ask someone to try and make? Join us!
  14. Not really, because they're wargame calculators. I've done several modifications and they won't work with my version of the game. Thanks though. I'll be out of town Friday-Sunday, but Tuesday is WW2 holiday, so I should be able to process the final round of battles Monday and Tuesday
  15. It's ok if you disappear, as long as it's for good reason. Good luck in the upcoming exam!
  16. It's gonna need some tweaks to adapt to everyone's options of things to do, but I'm game. Where do we sign up?
  17. I'm assuming Flo checked the door for traps while previously in the room, so unless the door is unlocked, we wait for Bronan to kick it down. Get on with it!
  18. Quick update before I go to bed Despite grabbing a sandwich for breakfast, I managed to resist the urge to grab a second one after leaving work. Came back home to make a great salad with spinach, carrot, tuna and grilled zucchini. Was expecting to go for our D&d v5 session in the afternoon, but then I called another player for confirmation and found out our DM is still out of town. Should have gone to the gym, but instead went for a cup of coffee with him. Oh well. At least on the way I managed to resist my craving for a chocolate croissant (seriously) thinking I'd be having dinner soon and remembering how it made me feel the last few times. I told myself if I was that hungry for something sweet, I could get some home made cake at the cafe, otherwise if I was still craving it on the way back, I'd grab it. Which I was, but still managed to resist, thinking that I was actually headed home for dinner. Listened to the record of the day and made some great dinner (this plus some steamed codfish). Also, in continuation of my previous outburst, perhaps after reading Steve's "No excuses" blog post too, I decided that not having enough/proper space to train at home is, as of now, unacceptable.
  19. Also in RPGs, healers often have spells that let them take some, or all, of the damage that someone else would normally receive, as their own. Real life also has both versions, you may heal someone physically, mentally or spiritually either with a cost for yourself or without any. And I know a lot of people, myself included, that have received plenty of healing by reading your thoughts and actions, don't think that cost you that much to do. You are a beacon of hope and inspiration, dear. I speak for myself, but I know the rest of the "adventuring party" will agree, when those hardships and doubts come to test you, we'll be around to protect our healer
  20. Also, I may be joining the Assassins next challenge because of this (they seem more fitting than monks) I gotta go out there and do what makes me happy. Crossfit is good for building a good physical condition, but it's not as "ninja-d out"as I'd like. I've never been into skating and stuff, but I've had this burning desire to try out parkour since I found out about it. Also I enjoy crazy dives from cliffs overlooking the sea. So anyway, there's this guy I know... ...and they have a little crew going on for a few years... and I contacted him today. They do free classes every Sunday 17:00-20:00 and meet Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays to train (no teaching involved). Since I'll be out of town for the weekend, he invited me to go with him on Dec. 2nd to try it out. Now, I've been holding myself back for a while. Tricking, skating, parkour, that stuff's for kids, right? Besides, I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone, word gets around, so if I'm supposed to be/roleplay a respected lawyer who's also involved in the city council affairs, I can't be tumbling around Sorry mate, but you're about to get owned. Crossfit has proven you're not too old, you have a working body that responds to much worse training than twists and flips and it can only get better. As for people noticing, take a look at those videos. That little park they're training in is in a part of town where thousands pass by each day and since they're no trees or buildings to block line of sight, anyone passing by can notice if someone's on the grass. It's a little bright green patch, it automatically draws the eye. So how come you've never seen anyone doing flips there? Besides, put your money where your mouth is. You keep saying no one really cares. So go do some flips, no one will care. Why would you care? Did anyone notice or care when you went to the beach for a Crossfit event? You keep saying things need to be done when the time is right, because afterwards they're harder and the cost is greater. Do you want to spend more time feeling bad about not having tried this out? Or would you prefer to do it years from now, with more work, an older body and probably more obligations on your shoulders? You're the one saying to go after happiness and yet when you realize something might make you happy, you pass? Enough excuses already
  21. Sign me up for when you're putting that out. Will it be launched next challenge?
