  1. Getting some snacks/goodies made, and eggs down my gullet.

  2. I used to be here, and then I wasn't, and now I'm back. A LOT has changed since I was here last (not just in my house, but on the forum!) and I've lost all my cred. When I was here the first time, I didn't have a kid, a dog in training, or multiple sclerosis. Now I do. SO, in the event of being curious (and needing to change), I have already cut out gluten and sugar, based on community "research" on an MS forum. I am trying so hard to make a change by myself, so I can (potentially) get off thrice-weekly injections - I've got a serious case of injection fatigue that prevents me from doing my own shots, so I have to get a family member to do it for me. I also have a cruise coming up in October of this year, thanks to some more awesome friends of ours that have offered to pay our way, and I want to look awesome. I do NOT want to look like I have a disability (other than having a service dog) while I'm hanging out on a cruise ship in the Bahamas! I'm glad to be back! Hi to all you people!
  3. First challenge, woohoo! Not starting off on the best note (haven't been feeling well for 3-4 days), but I'm not about to let that stop me. In fact, it may actually help! Fitness Goals: 1. NF beginner bodyweight circuit 3 times a week. 2. "Starter" HIIT routine 2-3 times a week. 3. Gentle yoga 3-4 times a week, preferably right after getting out of bed. Life Goals: 1. Stop biting my nails. (Any tips for this would be great. And yes, I've tried all the no-bite polishes, the tape, the bandaids - everything but hypnotism.) 2. Go at least 80/20 paleo every day. 3. Realize a dream (already in progress)! Looks like a bit, but I know I can do it.
  4. Wow. May I say, that's kind of jerk behavior on her part. Usually a "no, thank you" is sufficient, but when it's not, I'd go with, "No, I'm cutting out sugar for my health." If that doesn't get people to back off, you can always start elaborating. If they're not interested in the details, they'll usually stop.
  5. Sprouting or soaking is the best way I've heard of to minimize and/or reduce the effects of phytic acid in grains/legumes. http://www.westonaprice.org/food-features/living-with-phytic-acid - Fig. 3 specifically addresses quinoa.
  6. Checked out the site. I have to say, that is a thoroughly innovative use of falconry! Definitely one I've never seen utilized this side of the Mississippi - or anywhere, really. I can see its potential for effectiveness, though. Keep up the hard work on cleaning out your diet and it will pay off. if nothing else, you can always go 80/20 for a couple of weeks, then 90/10, then... well, you get the idea.
  7. I haven't decided. I have several stories that have been on hiatus for almost a year, including an original that really wants to be made into a novel but my worldbuilding skills mostly suck. I guess that could be my second life goal in this upcoming challenge. I haven't participated in a Nano since high school!
  8. Push-ups are my bane. But, alack, I'll have to get over it. My question is this: to work up to a proper push-up, would you recommend incline push-ups or 'modified' (i.e. from the knee) push-ups as the means to the end?
  9. Welcome to the community! The lack of close-to-home support is rough. My in-laws can't fathom the possibility of no rolls, no cereal, no cookies, no cake. My husband looks at me funny but otherwise lets me to myself. My recommendation is to be honest with your partner about your reasons for doing what you're doing and hope they'll come around, maybe even join you on your journey. If not, the best you can do is smile and nod along the way. The benefits of your hard work will be evident and complaints about a "tangent" will eventually go by the wayside.
  10. The Tough Mudder site has a training 'manual' if that helps: The Tough Mudder Workout I was just looking at TM myself, but the next race is in February; sadly, I don't think I can reasonably expect to be fit enough in that amount of time. Good luck!
  11. It seems every time I have a question, NF has the answer. I was thinking about starting an at-home routine to supplement a starting bodyweight routine, for recovery and flexibility, when I came upon this thread. Awesome! I'd like to mention for those who have said they "can't do yoga" the benefits it has provided some of my family members. My mother has a host of health problems, the least of which include digestive issues, and degenerative vertebrae. She does yoga every morning, sometimes for 15 minutes and sometimes for an hour. She has felt better and looked better in the past two years that she has continued her practice than ever before, and no longer has to maintain a regimen of pain medications or anti-inflammatories. My grandfather, who will be 95 on the 24th, goes to a seniors' yoga class at the local Y three days a week. He no longer finds it as hard to get up and down from his recliner, sit for long periods, climb stairs, or any of the other activities he had stopped because of limited mobility. His doctors say he is in better health than some of their patients in their 30s and 40s. Yoga can do amazing things! I have back and hip injuries from when I was working outdoors with livestock (like you, Oogie) that have been exacerbated by the last five years of desk work. I think if I had kept moving at the pace I was keeping, I wouldn't be so stove up in the mornings, but no such luck. As it is, I am looking forward to regaining a sense of pleasant awareness from being in my body.
  12. I joined a group of state bloggers and spent the weekend discussing local food.
  13. Been waiting for this challenge ever since I joined up. Count me in!
  14. Rock on, Ozmo. It didn't come on overnight and it won't leave that way, either. The LEO life can be hard on all its occupants; glad you found the first step and realized you want to make a change. We're all here when you need us!
