  1. Yeah, it really helps basically get your entire system reset, including helping with inflammation throughout the gut and body and helping get your insulin sensitivity back. Normally, our bodies need a good omega 6 to omega 3 ratio, but in most of the processed and grain-based foods today, the omega 6's are much higher meaning that you have stores of omega 6 still present in your body and in your diet on a day to day basis. So if you start off with a heavier dose of omega 3's, you can start to reset all of that negative ratio, and then after a while you can tone it down just to make sure you are getting enough in your meals everyday. A good starting point is 0.5g of EPA/DHA per 10 pounds of body weight. I myself take 9grams a day, which might seem like a lot, but if you consider that you could get the same amount of omega 3s from 2 healthy fish meals a day, then it doesn't seem so ridiculous. If you are just starting and are really in need of some insulin sensitivity, you could prop that up to .75g or even 1g per 10 lbs, but I think .5 is a good place to start. Once you start feeling better, drop it down to .25 and see how things run there. Definitely try it out!
  2. I've been strict paleo-dieting for about 4 months, and the results have been amazing! I feel great and my performance is better than ever. If your are looking for resources on Paleo, I have two that I highly recommend. One is a blog done by a mother of two who manages to feed her family paleo everyday. If she can do it, we can too. everydaypaleo.com The recipes on here are great. As for general information on the diet, I would recommend "The Paleolithic Solution" podcast. Just a crazy amount of information, and usually really easy to listen to. I also supplement with some fish oil. Anyone else on here do that? I've found it to be really helpful, and now that my Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are more balanced, my body is much better at using fat as an energy source. I'm just starting to get my girlfriend on this diet. She was resistant at first, and really didn't want to give up her donuts, but after eating with me for a couple of weeks and going back to eat a donut on a "cheat day", it did nothing but make her sick. Now that I've been eating like this for so long, if I have any gluten at all I can immediately tell that my body isn't happy. Seems crazy to think that something I ate for my entire life can make me feel so crappy now. Lastly, best way to make the paleodiet work for you during the week is to pre-cook food. I always pack my lunches the night before, and they usually consist of a small salad, chicken breast, an orange, and apple (or sweet potato wedges) and nuts (my favorite are macadamia and they have a good Omega 6-3 ratio. Good luck everyone!
  3. Hi everyone! Glad to join forces with the Rebel Army. My name is Matt. I am 23 years old, and currently living in the Inaka (aka "the boonies") in Japan and teaching English to middle school kids. It's loads fun. My fitness resume: In high school I started doing some lifting and played soccer pretty seriously, but it wasn't until 2 years ago when a friend turned me on to Crossfit that my passion for fitness really took off. Never joined a Crossfit gym, but did my best to teach myself the movements and workout at the university gym. I was feeling pretty good about everything until a year ago when I moved to Japan, joined a local basketball team, and subsequently tore 3 ligaments in my right ankle. Suck. That was in August last year, and I'm just now getting back to full health. In the interim, I didn't just sit on my butt though. I actually started reading, researching, and questioning whether what I was doing was the best for my health. I started eating Zone, then Zone-Paleo, and am now completely turned over to a Paleo diet. I love it, and am feeling healthier than ever even with an injury. I read "Starting Strength" and realized that I was probably lifting dangerously badly beforehand, and consider myself lucky I didn't get a more serious injury. I tried out a pair of Vibram Fivefingers and went jogging, and rekindled my love of running and the outdoors. So, in essence, the injury was a curse and a blessing. I ended up discovering a lot of new things, including this site! A final note on injury and rehab: I was so anxious to try out all these new things that I jumped back into working out WAAAY to early, and ended up seriously injurying my SI joint in my back in May, which is something I am still recovering from 3 months later. I really want to caution all the other Rebel Army members to take their time when starting a new exercise or coming back from injury. While it's good to "push yourself" while working out, you also need to be smart about listening to what your body needs. Trust me, there is no worse feeling than pushing it too hard after an injury and compounding the problem you have been working so hard to fix. My Mission: I really like the idea of being a "Ranger" as described by Steve in an earlier post. I want to be lean, but strong and athletic. I especially want to develop my "explosiveness" for sports. I love playing them all. Even though I'm only 5'10" and white, I would also love to be able to dunk a basketball. Hey, a guy can dream, right? I'm hoping to start building up strength/explosiveness by doing a Starting Strength program: which would also teach me to lift correctly. The other thing I really want to do is work on my flexibility. My hips are dangerously inflexible, and could be the root cause of a lot of back problems later in life, so I need to get that knocked out. There is only one small gym around here, and I won't always have access to it, so I'm trying to do as many bodyweight exercises as I can (currently, my pull-up bar consists of an ibeam suspended under my emergency exit stairs, lol.) I'm hoping to both learn a lot from everyone here, stay motivated, and also contribute what knowledge and experience I have to the community. Final Notes: Favorite Game: Tie between Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy 7, and Halo 2. Last Movie I saw in the theater: Inception. Holy Crap. Favorite Movie: Tie between Braveheart and Star Wars Episode 5. Favorite Japanese Band: Elle Garden. (Good for those of you who are learning Japanese. Half of the songs are in English too.) Favorite Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist. Rock. Favorite Cheat Meal: Haagen Daas Rum Raisin Ice Cream with 86% Dark Chocolate. 5'10"/165/23 Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu!
