  13. THERE IS NO BETTER METAPHOR FOR THE BEGINNING OF MY NERD FITNESS JOURNEY THAN “THE MATRIX.†I AM THE ONE (MAIN QUEST: LOSE 50 LBS) I’M HERE BECAUSE I KNOW SOMETHING. WHAT I KNOW, I CAN’T EXPLAIN, BUT I FEEL IT. I’VE FELT IT MY ENTIRE LIFE. THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE WORLD. I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT IT IS THERE, LIKE A SPLINTER IN MY MIND, DRIVING ME MAD. IT IS THE FEELING THAT HAS BROUGHT ME HERE. THE MATRIX... THE MATRIX, FOR ME, IS EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE THAT IS KEEPING ME FROM BECOMING THE PERSON I AM SUPPOSED TO BE. ALL THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FORCES THAT FIGHT AGAINST ME. THE POWERS THAT WANT ME TO BE A MINDLESS CONSUMER OF CALORIES AND SMART PHONE APPS. THE FOOD INDUSTRY THAT HAS FLOODED OUR STORES AND RESTAURANTS WITH PROCESSED FOODS. A SOCIETY THAT HAS TURNED FOOD AND PHONES INTO ENTERTAINMENT. MY OWN MIND, WHICH HAS BECOME ACUSTOM TO RELIEVING STRESS THROUGH FOOD, AND THAT HAS BECOME ADDICTED TO SIMPLE SUGARS AND CAFFIENE. IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP FROM THIS NIGHTMARE, AND START FIGHTING BACK. IT IS TIME TO START LEVELING UP! WHEN I COMPLETE THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF THIS CHALLENGE AND LEVEL UP TO LEVEL ONE, MY FIRST 10 ATTRIBUTE POINTS WILL BE ALLOCATED AS SUCH TO REFLECT MY CURRENT STRENTGHS AND WEAKNESSES: STR – 2.0 DEX – 0.5 STA – 2.0 CON – 0.5 WIS – 3.0 CHA – 2.0 FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT (SIDE QUEST #1: EARN 500 XP) NERD FITNESS IS MY WHITE, HERE TO LEAD ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. NERD FITNESS WILL SHOW ME THE WAY, BUT I MUST CHOOSE TO FOLLOW. HOW FAR DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE I GO, IS ON ME. GOAL #1 FOR THIS CHALLENGE IS TO EARN 500 XP IN THE NERD FITNESS ACADEMY, THROUGH THE ACADEMY QUESTS IN A 6 WEEK TIME FRAME. SINCE THIS IS MY FIRST CHALLENGE, MAKING THESE GOALS WORTH ONLY ONE ADDITONAL ATTRIBUTE POINT EACH, EACH OF THESE GOALS WILL BE AN ALL OR NOTHING CHALLENGE. Earn 500 XP = [sTR .25][DEX .25][sTA .25][CON .25] THE BLUE PILL OR THE RED PILL (SIDE QUEST #2: CUT FAST FOOD) EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR, EVERY MINUTE, EVERY SECOND, WE FACE CHOICES. WHAT WE CHOSE IN EVERY MOMENT IS WHAT DEFINES US. MUCH LIKE IN THE MOVIE, THE MATRIX, WE CAN CHOOSE TO TAKE THE BLUE PILL, AND CONTINUE DOWN A MINDLESS PATH WHERE WE BECOME WE SLAVES TO THE THINGS THAT TRY TO CONTROL US. OR, WE CAN CHOOSE THE RED PILL, AND FACE THE TRUTH. THE TRUTH THAT LIVING IS ALL ABOUT FIGHTING. THAT ANYHING WORTH WHILE IN THIS LIFE MUST BE WORKED AT AND FOUGHT FOR. FOR TOO LONG NOW, I’VE BEEN STARING AT THE RED PILL, AWARE OF WHAT IT MEANS, BUT REFUSING TO ACT. TODAY IT IS TIME TO PICK IT UP AND TAKE MY MEDICINE. GOAL #2 FOR THIS CHALLENGE IS TO BEGIN CUTTING DOWN ON MY FAST FOOD INTAKE. THERE ARE NO FOODS THAT ARE MADE BY FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS THAT I CAN’T MAKE MYSELF IN A HEALTHIER WAY. THE NERD FITNESS ACADAMEY STATES THAT SMALL CHANGES BEAT OUT DRASTIC CHANGES 99% OF THE TIME, SO I’M NOT GOING TO GO COLD TURKEY HERE. MY GOAL IS TO CUT BACK MY FAST FOOD INTAKE TO TWO MEALS A WEAK. ONLY 2 FAST FOOD MEALS A WEEK = [CON 1] THERE IS NO SPOON (SIDE QUEST #3: WORKOUTS) WE ALL HAVE A SPOON. SOMETHING WE HAVE CREATED IN OUR MIND THAT IS INFLEXIBLE; SOMETHING THAT WE THINK IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE. I’M 33, AND FOR ME, MY SPOON HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY SELF IMAGE OF MY PHYSICAL SELF. THOUGH I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A BIG GUY AND HAVE BEEN IN THE MILITARY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, I’VE NEVER VIEWED MYSELF AS A STRONG PERSON. I’VE ALWAYS BEEN DOWN ON MYSELF WHEN IT COMES TO MY PHYSCIAL STRENGTH. ON TOP OF HAVING POOR SELF ESTEM, WHEN YOU GET TO BE 33 YEARS OLD, THOUGHTS START TO CREEP INTO YOU HEAD THAT YOU ARE WASTING TIME, AND THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE ACHIEVED A CERTAIN LEVEL OF FITNESS BY NOW. GUILT STARTS TO PILE ON. THE LESSON HERE IS THAT THERE IS NO SPOON! THERE ARE VERY VIEW UNCHANGABLE REALITIES, AND THE ONLY THING THAT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE A CHANGE, IS TO CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK. DURING THIS CHALLENGE, I WILL PROVE TO MYSELF THAT MY SPOON DOESN’T EXIST AND BEGIN CHANGING INTO THE STRONG PERSON I THOUGHT I COULD NEVER BE. GOAL #3 FOR THIS CHALLENGE IS TO WORKOUT 6 TIMES A WEEK AND TO EXERCISE POSITIVE SELF TALK 6 TIMES A WEEK. 6 WORKOUTS + 6 POSITIVE SELF TALKS / WEEK = [sTR 1] ][CHA 1] FREE YOUR MIND (LIFE QUEST: REDUCE SCREEN TIME) AS AMAZING AS IT IS, LIVING IN A TECHNOLOGICAL AGE, I’M STILL OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER A TIME BEFORE THE INTERNET AND CELL PHONES. A TIME WHEN FRIENDS WERE PEOPLE YOU HUNG OUT WITH, NOT JUST PEOPLE WHO STALK YOUR ONLINE PROFILE. A TIME WHEN YOU WENT ON A BIKE RIDE JUST BECAUSE YOU LOVED IT, WITHOUT NEEDING TO POST ABOUT IT OR NEEDING OTHER PEOPLE TO “LIKE IT†TO FEEL VALIDATED. IT’S TIME TO FREE MY MIND AND START INTERACTING WITH THE WORLD AROUND ME. MY LIFE GOAL FOR THIS CHALLENGE IS TO CUT DOWN ON SCREEN TIME AT NIGHT AND TO ERASE NON-ESSENTIAL APPS FROM MY PHONE. FOR 6 NIGHTS A WEEK, I WILL NOT HAVE ANY SCREEN TIME AFTER 9PM; NO TV, NO COMPUTER, NO IPHONE, NO IPAD. THIS WILL FORCE ME TO EITHER GET SOME MORE SLEEP, OR DO SOMETHING MORE PRODUCTIVE, LIKE PACK MY LUNCH FOR THE NEXT DAY OR READ A BOOK. ALSO, FOR THE FULL 6 WEEKS, I WILL REMOVE ALL NON ESSESNTIAL APPS OFF MY PHONE THAT NORMALLY KEEP ME HUNCHED OVER IT LIKE A DIGITAL CRACK ADDICT: FACEBOOK, THE CHIVE, CLASH OF CLANS, BOOM BEACH, CANDY CRUSH, WORDS WITH FRIENDS. 6 DAYS/WEEK NO SCREEN TIME AFTER 9PM = [CON .5] DELETE APPS OFF PHONE FOR 6 WEEKS = [CHA .5] MY BIG WHY MY MOTIVATION IS I WANT TO BE MENTALLY AND PHSYICALLY STRONG. I WANT TO BE HEALTHY, SO THAT I CAN BE ACTIVE AND CONNECT WITH MY WIFE AND CHILDREN FOR A LONG TIME TO COME. I WANT TO OBTAIN THE BALANCE THAT THE NERD FITNESS ACADEMY STRIVES FOR: HAPPY, HEALTHY, FEELING GREAT AND LOOKING GREAT NAKED!
